Chances are you’ve eaten a sugary meal before bed and found yourself struggling to sleep at some point in your life. You may have even experienced sleep disturbances like nightmares, night sweats or snoring.

That’s because blood sugar and sleep are closely linked, and your blood sugar levels naturally surge while you’re sleeping. This typically occurs around 4-8 a.m. if you follow a normal sleep schedule. However, blood sugar that’s too low or too high can negatively impact your sleep, and sleeping too much or too little can affect blood sugar in return.

Still, it’s not just the act of consuming sugar that can make blood sugar levels spike or drop. Stress, pain, medications and even dehydration can all send your blood sugar on a rollercoaster, which is why it’s so important to take steps to regulate your blood sugar.

Here’s everything you should know about the connection between blood sugar and sleep, how to manage your blood sugar and signs that it may be time to seek out the help of a medical professional if blood sugar is affecting your sleep or vice-versa.

A woman has difficulty sleeping.

The Importance of Sleep

Like diet and exercise, sleep is a critical component of overall health. According to Dr. Michael Twery, a sleep expert at the National Institutes of Health, “Sleep affects almost every tissue in our bodies. It affects growth and stress hormones, our immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure and cardiovascular health.”

Sleep deficiency, or not getting enough sleep, is linked to numerous chronic health problems. These include heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and more. If you notice that you feel run down after bouts of sleeplessness or you’re more prone to getting sick, that’s sleep’s impact on immune function.

Good quality sleep is also essential for your mental health. Poor sleep can contribute to depression, anxiety and overall mental distress. That’s why making sleep a priority—and understanding what affects sleep, including blood sugar—are crucial to your wellbeing.

Can Blood Sugar Affect Sleep?

While it may come as a surprise, blood sugar can have a substantial impact on your sleep. Researchers are still trying to understand how exactly sugar affects sleep, but here’s what we know so far based on existing studies and research.

High Blood Sugar

A 2015 study of 63 patients with type 2 diabetes found that individuals in the group with higher blood sugar levels experienced poorer sleep. Yet it’s not just those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that saw worsened sleep due to high blood sugar.

A second study in 2019 discovered that 62% of people with blood sugar levels in the pre-diabetes range were prone to worsened sleep, compared to 46% of people with normal blood sugar levels. More research is needed to fully understand the link.

Signs of high blood sugar, or hyperglycaemia, include:

  • Increased thirst and dry mouth
  • Frequent urination
  • Tiredness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Recurrent infections

Low Blood Sugar

The connection between low blood sugar and sleep is more known. Low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can cause a host of sleep problems. It can happen in people with or without diabetes, and the form that occurs at night is called nocturnal hypoglycemia.

Your blood glucose, or blood sugar levels can drop while you sleep and stay low for several hours. Sleep disturbances that may occur as a result of low blood sugar include nightmares, crying or yelling while sleeping, sweating to the point of making your pajamas or sheets damp, and feeling confused, tired or irritable upon waking up.

Nocturnal hypoglycemia can be a source of insomnia, a common sleep disorder characterized by trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or getting good quality sleep.

Severe hypoglycemia can be extremely dangerous. Be sure to speak to a doctor if you exhibit persistent signs of low blood sugar such as feeling shaky or jittery, hungry, tired, dizzy, lightheaded, your heart is beating too fast or irregularly or if you can’t see or speak clearly, as this can be a medical emergency and should be treated right away.

How Does Sleep Affect Blood Sugar?

Blood sugar can affect sleep, but the quality and quantity of your sleep can also change your blood sugar for better or for worse. Sleep has a direct effect on blood sugar levels. While getting good regular shuteye can help you maintain normal blood sugar levels, poor or insufficient sleep can have a negative impact on glucose. Here’s why:

Sleep Deprivation

Time after time, research shows that too little sleep is associated with higher blood sugar levels. Not only does getting poor sleep increase your glucose levels, but it can also reduce your insulin sensitivity, which can lead to glucose build up in the blood and eventually type 2 diabetes (insulin helps control the amount of sugar in your blood).

Sleep Problems and Blood Sugar

Yet it’s not just sleep deprivation that can affect blood sugar. Common sleep problems such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy can also drive your blood sugar levels up.

A 2020 study found that those with severe sleep apnea had 14% higher fasting blood glucose levels compared to those without sleep apnea in African American populations, which are at an increased risk for developing diabetes.

Narcolepsy is also associated with increased incidence of type 2 diabetes, pointing to a possible connection between the sleep disorder and higher blood sugar levels.

What Happens to Blood Sugar While You Sleep?

While the link between sleep and blood sugar may be alarming, it’s important to remember that your blood sugar levels naturally rise as part of your body’s circadian rhythm, or internal clock that helps you understand when it’s time to go to sleep and wake up.

As we mentioned earlier, this typically occurs between 4-8 a.m. during what’s known as the “dawn effect.” The natural increase in glucose production gives your body energy that helps you wake up.

In healthy people, insulin controls the surge and signals to your muscle, fat and liver cells to absorb the glucose from your blood, keeping your blood sugar levels stable. People who have diabetes or are at risk of developing it have higher blood sugar levels because insulin isn’t working at the optimal level.

How to Improve Blood Sugar and Sleep

There are many steps you can take to improve blood sugar levels and therefore your sleep. Getting enough shut-eye is arguably the biggest change you can make, but there are other healthy lifestyle habits that may be worth adopting.

Try these strategies to help improve blood sugar and sleep.

Importance of Exercise for Regulating Blood Sugar

A woman does yoga on a mat in a room

Regular exercise plays a huge role in blood sugar regulation. Physical activity can lower your blood glucose for up to 24 hours or more following your workout, making you more sensitive to insulin (which is a good thing). Experts recommend at least 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise to help manage blood sugar levels.

Regulating your blood sugar levels by exercising can help you sleep better. Still, be sure not to exercise just before bed, since you’ll want to give your brain time to wind down.

Recommended Exercises for Better Sleep

Exercise can do wonders for your sleep. Try these exercises to get more shuteye.

  • Cardio workouts
  • Yoga
  • Resistance exercises
  • Breathing exercises
  • Stretching
  • Meditation

Improve Your Sleep Hygiene

Having good sleep hygiene, or sleep behaviors, habits and environment, can also promote quality rest. Here’s how to boost your sleep hygiene for optimal sleep.

Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule

It’s recommended that healthy adults get seven-to-nine hours of sleep per night. While this may not always be possible due to late nights, work shifts or taking care of young children, establishing a consistent sleep schedule can help you get enough sleep.

When life allows, try to make it a priority to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, regardless of whether that’s a weekday or a weekend. This can help your body learn when it’s time to wind down, and when it’s time to wake back up again.

Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

A sleep-friendly environment can help lull you to sleep. A cool, dark and quiet bedroom is an essential building block of good sleep hygiene. Most experts recommend keeping your bedroom temperature between 60 and 67 degrees for better sleep. If your room is too hot, you can also use a fan or breathable bedding to keep yourself cool.

You may want to consider investing in blackout shades or a sleep mask if light pollution is keeping you awake or causing you to wake up too early. Ear plugs can also help cut out noise if you live in a noisy area or your partner’s snoring isn’t letting you sleep.

Avoiding screen time before bed is also critical to sleep hygiene. Since the blue light emitted from phones and TV can negatively impact your sleep and make it harder to fall or stay asleep, you may want to opt for cuddling up with a good book instead.

Relaxation Techniques and Stress Management

A woman meditates on a bed with headphones on

Keeping your stress levels low can both help control your blood sugar and also help you sleep better. If you find yourself stressed out at night or your mind is wandering to the next day’s chores and obligations, relaxation techniques can help you manage stress.

Deep breathing can help slow your heart rate and refocus your thoughts. You can also use meditation for sleep, which can include breathing exercises and setting a positive intention for getting quality shuteye. This can be done on your own or via an app.

Progressive muscle relaxation is another proven solution. This includes inhaling and contracting one muscle group at a time, then exhaling and letting go of that tension.

Keeping a bedtime diary may also help you get your thoughts or stress down on paper so you aren’t thinking about them while trying to fall or stay asleep.

Monitor Blood Sugar Levels or Seek Medical Advice

It’s important to monitor blood sugar levels. Getting an annual physical can help you stay on top of your blood sugar levels and identify any areas for improvement. People diagnosed with diabetes can also use a blood sugar monitor at home.

If you’re showing signs of high or low blood sugar, you may want to seek out medical advice to rule out any underlying conditions or to address your sleep quality if sleep is affecting your blood sugar. Getting good sleep can be one way to lower blood sugar.

Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base Review: General Overview

Purple is one of the most popular online mattress brands and for good reason. The Purple mattresses feature a unique GelFlex Grid that is supportive, comfortable and breathable at the same time. One of the drawbacks? It makes the Purple mattresses extremely heavy, so they need a lot more support.

Because of this, the brand offers multiple supportive bases including two adjustable bases. The Purple Premium Plus is the brand’s highest-end base and it boasts some features I have personally never seen in an adjustable base. The Purple Premium Plus stands out against the competition in a number of ways, but it does have its issues as well.

Pros of the Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base

  • High-end, durable design
  • Adjustable lumbar support
  • Additional head tilt

Cons of the Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base

  • Has a higher price point
  • Hard to set up
  • No wall hugging

How Does The Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base Work?

I’ll start by talking about what makes up the Premium Plus and how it all operates.

Design

While it is a higher-end base, the Purple Premium Plus has a similar design to the best adjustable bases. It features a sturdy steel frame that holds up with a fabric-covered platform. Underneath the platform, you’ll find all the guts and inner workings of the base: multiple hydraulic pumps and a whole array of wires. Thankfully, you don’t have to plug in or worry about these wires.

A close shot of the Purple Premium Plus with its leg section raised

Below the frame, the Purple has one standout feature. It has six adjustable plastic legs. They allow you to adjust the height of the base from a 12 inches down to just a few inches. This will make it easier to fit the base inside pretty much any bed frame.

Settings

First off, the Purple Premium Plus has all the settings you’ll find with other adjustable bases. You can raise the head and foot areas of the base, and it has presets such as Zero Gravity and Anti-Snore. And, it has a massage feature very similar to what I experienced with other bases like the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension adjustable base. You can also use the remote to program three manual presets to adjust the base to your favorite positions.

A man sits on the Purple Premium Plus with the head section raised

The Purple Premium Plus has a few extra features I haven’t seen with other bases. For instance, it has something called “Pillow Tilt.” This raises just the very top of the head area to incline your head slightly while you sleep. Also, you can adjust the lumbar support of the base. A separate hydraulic pump raises a bar to give you more support under your lumbar area. This is a very unique feature, and I will discuss how it felt below.

In addition, the Premium Plus has an under-the-bed lighting system. If you have to get up during the night, motion sensors turn on LEDs to help guide your way.

Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base Compatibility

Purple mattresses are some of the heaviest online mattresses out there. The GelFlex Grid is a bulky material that, together with coils and high-density foams, requires a good deal of support. So, to test out the Purple Premium Plus, I paired it with one of the brand’s heaviest mattresses, the Purple RestorePlus

I put the mattress on the base, but I didn’t start adjusting it quite yet. I wanted to see if the Purple Premium Plus could simply support the mattress. I rolled around and got in and out of bed, and the base did not sway or show any other signs of weakness. I also didn’t notice any lack of support when I lay in all three sleeping positions.

When I started adjusting the base, it also performed pretty well. Even though the RestorePlus is a heavier mattress, the base was able to lift it with no issues. However, I noticed the mattress lifting off the base when I put it in Zero Gravity mode. This is more the fault of the mattress, but it is something to note.

A man uses the Zero Gravity function on the Purple Premium Plus base

Also, when I raised the head area of the base, the mattress slid down toward the bottom of the base. Being a heavier mattress, the Purple RestorePlus started to collapse in on itself. Because of this, when I put the base back in its flat position, I had to rearrange the mattress and pull it back toward the head of the base. Again, this is an issue with the mattress, but keep this in mind if you are going to try a Purple mattress with this base.

How To Assemble The Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base

Even when you’re dealing with a simple, light base, it can still be a pain to put it together. And, out of the many bases I’ve put together, the Purple was indeed a pain.

First off, this is easily the heaviest base I have put together. I recommend you read and follow the instructions on the box. It is a two-person job. I tried to lift this box by myself, and it was not one of my better decisions.

So, I asked my coworker to help me slide the box into the bedroom. We took the base out of the box and cleared away the cardboard. I then removed the bags and boxes of components stored underneath the base.

Then, it was an easy matter of screwing in the six legs and attaching the power cord. However, it was not so easy to flip the base onto the legs. Again, you’ll want to do this with a friend’s help. The plastic legs cannot bear weight at an angle, so you and your helper will need to completely lift the base and then flip it without the legs touching.

A close shot of the Purple Premium Plus's plastic leg

Finally, I needed to pair the remote with the base. According to the base’s guide, the remote was supposed to be automatically paired, but this was not the case for me. However, I followed the easy instructions to pair the remote, and the base was good to go. Just make sure your base is working with the remote before you set the instructions aside.

Now, let’s take a look at the customer service terms for the Purple adjustable base.

Trial Period

The Purple base does not come with a trial period. This is normal for adjustable bases, however. I have not come across any adjustable base with a sleep trial. In fact, it is rare that you can ever return an adjustable base unless there are severe manufacturing defects.

Warranty Info

You get a 10-year limited warranty with Purple base. If you have issues within the first two years, Purple will repair or replace any parts. Between two and five years, Purple will cover any defective parts, but you may have to pay for shipping. Between five and 10 years, the warranty is much more limited and only covers a few parts of the base. You will most likely have to pay for shipping or repair during this time frame.

Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base Performance

I judge adjustable bases on just how well they adjust. So, I tried out all of the features of the Purple Premium Plus and really put them to the test.

Materials

While the Purple was heavy and difficult to set up, I can’t complain about its materials. The Purple is a sturdy base that features durable steel and an impressive construction. Based on its design, it should outlive its 10-year warranty.

However, the plastic legs do give me pause. They aren’t as durable as the wood legs I have seen on other bases. I recommend being careful if you ever have to move the base or adjust the height of the legs.

Adjustability

When I first got the Purple Premium Plus, I tried out the basic settings. I raised the head section, and it came up past the 45-degree mark. Some bases adjust to a complete sitting position, so the Premium Plus was lacking in this respect. However, the leg section came up more than I have experienced with other bases.

The Purple Premium Plus’s extra features really stood out. Specifically, it’s the lumbar support and pillow tilt I want to talk about.

A close-up of the lumbar support function on the Purple Restore Plus

With the lumbar support feature, I was able to control the amount of support I received right under my lumbar area. As a heavier person who struggles with back pain, I loved this feature. I adjusted this area and felt some of the best lumbar support of my entire review career.

The pillow tilt also gave me just the right amount of incline for back sleeping. I’m a snorer and, together with the Anti Snore feature, I was able to prop up my head very comfortably.

Remote Control

The remote control was easy to use, but there was a lot going on with it. With many features come many buttons. Still, even without the guide, most people will be able to work the base with ease.

A hand holds the remote for the Purple Premium Plus

And, if you lose your remote or just don’t like it, you can pair the base with your phone. Using the Purple app, you can easily control the base.

Wall Hugging

Some bases will shift the entire mattress down when you raise the head. This will keep you close to the wall and your bedside table, even when you have raised the head section all of the way.

However, this was not the case with the Purple Premium Plus. There was no wall hugging, so I moved away from the wall when I raised up the head section.

Noise

The Purple Premium Plus wasn’t noisier than the other bases I have reviewed. When I adjusted the bed, it made a high-pitched whining noise, but it was not necessarily annoying. And, with a heavy Purple mattress on top, a lot of that noise was muffled.

Zero Gravity Function

The Zero Gravity function is designed to relieve pressure on your lower back and also improve circulation. This worked as advertised on the Purple Premium Plus. When I used this feature, I felt less pressure buildup around my lumbar area. Again, as a person who deals with back pain, this was very comfortable.

Anti-Snore Function

The Anti-Snore function also worked as advertised. It raised my head just a bit to prevent my esophagus from collapsing too much while I slept. While I can’t say that I snored less or had fewer sleep apnea incidents, paired with my CPAP machine, I slept comfortably using the Anti-Snore setting.

Massage

The Purple Premium Plus’s massage function was also very effective. On its highest setting, I felt the massage vibrations through the thick Purple RestorePlus mattress. Also, I enjoyed how I could set a timer, take a nap, and the massage function would turn off automatically while I slept.

Additional Features

There is one additional feature that made the Purple Premium Plus stand out. While many bases feature LED lights underneath, I have never seen automatic motion detector lights. I didn’t have to push a button and, just getting out of bed, the lights came on and showed the way to the bathroom. This should be a huge boon for people who go to the bathroom often during the night.

Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base Pros and Cons

Again, here are the upsides and downsides of the Purple Premium Plus adjustable base.

Pros

  • It is a higher-end base that features durable, long-lasting materials.
  • Its lumbar support feature will help people with back pain or those who simply need more support under their lower back.
  • If you need to raise your head slightly while you sleep, the pillow tilt setting will do the trick.

Cons

  • It is not a very affordable option and costs more than many of its competitors.
  • It has no real wall hugging to speak of.
  • The Purple Premium Plus is a bulky base that is difficult to set up.

Purple Premium Plus Adjustable Base FAQs

Can I put a Purple mattress on any adjustable base?

The Purple mattresses will work with many adjustable bases. However, the Purple adjustable bases are designed to support and adjust the extra weight of the Purple mattresses.

How long will the Purple adjustable base last?

The Purple Premium Plus should last for at least 10 years. It features durable steel and other high-end components that should not break down too quickly. You are also covered by a 10-year limited warranty.

Is the Purple Power Base discontinued?

Yes, the Purple Power Base is discontinued. However, Purple now offers other adjustable bases. For a similar experience to the Power Base, we recommend the Purple Premium Plus adjustable base.

Pros of Fishers Finery

  • This pillow comes in luxurious packaging and comes with a mesh bag you can use to machine-wash your pillow.
  • This pillow is one of the best budget options on our list. It has a lower momme count than some of the other pillowcases, so is more affordable.
  • The Fishers Finery pillow is a great choice for preventing wrinkles and acne.

Cons of Fishers Finery

  • This pillow’s 19-momme construction means it feels thinner than some of the other pillows on this list.

Our Expert’s Take

If you prefer to avoid sleeping on animal byproducts, the Kitsch is a great silk alternative option. This satin pillowcase prevents frizz and fights breakouts and wrinkles just like a silk pillowcase, but it has a lower price point.

What our testers say: “Right out of the box I was really impressed with the silk-like feel. I almost forgot it wasn’t silk. This also featured a zipper, which I was really appreciative of.” – Tony, Reviewer

Pros of Kitsch

  • If you’re looking to get your beauty sleep on a budget, satin is a great choice. The Kitsch pillowcase costs less than $20.
  • Kitsch offers a 90-day return period.
  • The Kitsch pillowcase is machine-washable in cold water, and unlike silk, you can tumble dry this pillowcase on low heat.

Cons of Kitsch

  • Satin is not hypoallergenic.
  • Satin is not as breathable as silk.

What are the Benefits of a Silk Pillowcase?

Silk pillowcases have tons of benefits for your skin and hair. They can help keep your skin and hair stay hydrated overnight because they do not absorb moisture and leech natural oils the way cotton or polyester pillowcases do. Silk’s smooth surface also helps prevent wrinkles and protects your hair from breakage and frizziness. Finally, silk is naturally temperature regulating so can help keep you cool and comfortable all night long.

Want to learn more about silk? Check out our silk pillowcase benefits guide.

What to Look for in a Silk Pillowcase

When looking for a silk pillowcase you should first consider the type of silk it’s made with. Mulberry silk tends to feel the softest and most luxurious. Charmeuse is another popular option but is often blended with polyester or rayon, so it may be less durable.

Next, consider the momme count. A high momme count indicates that your silk is high-quality, durable, and buttery soft. A 25-momme pillowcase will feel ultra-luxurious. If you’re looking for something affordable and luxurious, I recommend looking for a momme count that falls within the 19-22 range.

Finally, consider color and sizing. You’ll want a pillowcase that matches your current bedding and works with your bedroom aesthetic.

How to Care for a Silk Pillowcase

Check the care instructions of your new pillowcase before washing. Most silk pillowcases can be machine-washed in a mesh bag, but some dark colored or especially delicate pieces may be hand-wash only. We recommend air drying your silk pillowcases to ensure they last a long time. Some brads, like Slip, also make silk-specific detergent that can help extend your pillowcase’s lifespan.

FAQs

What is the best type of silk for a pillowcase?

We recommend mulberry silk, which is stronger and longer lasting than other types of silk.

Are silk pillowcases worth it?

Silk pillowcases are a great way to protect your hair and skin. You’ll likely wake up with less breakage and fewer blemishes if you make the switch to silk.

Are silk or satin pillowcases better?

Silk pillowcases are more breathable and durable than satin pillowcases. Unlike satin, silk pillowcases are naturally hypoallergenic, which sleepers with sensitive skin might appreciate. But both types of fabric can help protect your skin and hair overnight.

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your entire sleep space or get rid of a rickety, squeaky bed frame, the options for bases and bed frames are just as endless as the mattress you can place on them. From metal, to adjustable, to low-profile, there’s something for everyone out there.

That’s why I put together a list of the best bed frames to help make the shopping process easier. Don’t stress, many of them are easy to put together and come in a variety of materials. Keep reading to see our top picks.

Our Top Picks for the Best Bed Frames

Our Verdict

We named the Thuma Bed Frame as our best overall bed frame. This elegant bed frame requires no tools to put together and it is made with eco-conscious materials. The wood is sturdy and very supportive, and should last you at least a decade.

How We Chose our Top Picks

With such a wide selection of bed frames out there, our team considered the dozens of frames and bases we have tested for this list. Ultimately, we settled on a list of seven that we consider the best bed frames on the market today.

A man tests out the Purple Platform bed frame.
Tony testing a bed frame in our sleep lab.

We used hands-on testing and considered factors such as price, materials, ease of assembly and more when selecting the options for this list. Even though we test these products for a short period of time (usually several days to a week), we also look at the overall quality and durability of each frame and test them to see if they sway at all when you move around or if they make any noise.

There’s something for everyone, so keep reading to see our in-depth descriptions for each frame.

Pros
Easy to put together

Wooden
Modern look
Cons
Pricey for some
The pillow/headboard cost extra
Not an adjustable base

Our Expert’s Take

Thuma has taken the internet by storm. It is sleek in design and its main selling point is how easy it is to assemble. I named it our best overall because in addition to that easy set up, it’s very sturdy and really is one of the best frames I’ve tested. In fact, this is usually the frame we test most mattresses on here at Mattress Clarity, so it is compatible with just about anything.

The wood pieces are sturdy and have a bit of heft to them. Moving around, you shouldn’t notice the frame sway or make any noise. You have the option to get just the frame itself, or opt for a pillowboard or headboard depending on the look you’re trying to go for in your room. This does change the price, but we tested the pillowboard and though it isn’t attached to the frame, it still adds a layer of separation between you and the wall.

What our testers say: “Sometimes setting up furniture can be a hassle, but that’s not the case with Thuma. I loved how easy this base was to set up. The minimalist wood design looks very sleek and elegant. I’m a bigger guy and after moving around a ton on this frame, it didn’t move or make any noise.” – Marten Carlson, Lead Reviewer

What we love about the Thuma Bed Frame

  • This is a great choice for those who are looking for something made with eco-conscious materials. It’s all from repurposed wood.
  • The Thuma is incredibly easy to set up. There are no tools involved and all you have to do is slide and lock pieces into place.
  • This bed creates a very simple, minimalist design that works well with any bedroom set up or overall aesthetic.

What to keep in mind about the Thuma Bed Frame

  • This is quite a pricey bed frame. Just the base itself is barely $1,000 and if you opt for the pillow board or the head board, the price goes up.
  • This is a rather low-profile bed frame, so it might not be the best thing if you’re relying on under-the-bed storage.
  • This isn’t an electric adjustable base, so if that’s something you’re looking for, be sure to look through our full list of the best adjustable bases and bed frames.

Pros
Legs are adjustable
Has padding around the edges
Also a regular adjustable base
Cons
Heavy
Pricey for some

Our Expert’s Take

If you’re looking for a bed frame that has plenty of space underneath it for some extra storage, the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus will do the trick. The legs are adjustable, and though trying to find the right height on a bed frame can be somewhat of a challenge, those that are looking for storage space should extend the legs to their tallest setting.

This is an electric adjustable base It comes with some presets, and that means there are some electronics on the underside of the frame. Even with this in mind, you should still be able to fit a medium sized storage container under this frame. Personally, this is the frame I sleep with every night and have the legs extended.  It keeps my mattress supported and is the perfect height for me.

What our testers say: “Even though this frame doesn’t come with literal storage built in, you can still make it high enough to store some bins underneath. I felt really supported on the Saatva base, too. It comes as a single piece, so all you need to do is screw the legs on. It’s quite heavy though, so you’ll need a friend.” – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What we love about the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus

  • This is a great base for those looking for a durable, adjustable bed frame that has room for storage.
  • You can make this a low profile base, or a high profile because you can adjust the adjust the height of the legs. But if you need the storage space, keep it nice and tall.
  • Some frames can be nothing but metal. This base has a nice layer of padding around the edges of the frame.

What to keep in mind about the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus

  • This is quite a heavy base, and it comes to you in a single piece. Moving this base around and setting it up is a two-person job.
  • Being an adjustable base, this frame is a mixture of metal and plastic, so if you prefer that all wooden look to your frame, this isn’t the best choice.

Pros
Adjustable
Under $1,000 for a queen
Comes with multiple presets
Legs are adjustable
Cons
Heavy
Only comes in black

Our Expert’s Take

Adjustable frames are good for people who need some extra support or are trying to find a  snoring solution. The Helix Adjustable Base is adjustable in two main ways: the legs have adjustable heights and you can use presets to adjust your sleeping position. The remote control comes with a few presets that can elevate your head, legs or both.

If you’re looking for a bed frame that is more low profile, you can keep the legs short, but if you prefer some height, you can extend the legs to achieve that. With this in mind, set up includes just attaching the legs to the frame and flipping it over. The Helix Adjustable base is streamlined and gets the job done for fans of adjustable bed frames.

What our testers say: “Some adjustable bases can cost a lot of money, but if you’re looking for that zero gravity feeling for less than $1,000, the Helix Adjustable Base is the one to look at. It really doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but for a value adjustable base it’s still a stand out. Just be sure to set up with a friend because this is quite heavy.” – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love about the Helix Adjustable Base

  • It’s a good option for anyone looking for an adjustable base, as even the legs are adjustable (you can change the height).
  • It comes with a few presets to help take the guesswork out of adjusting, but you can make some manual adjustments as well.
  • It’s included in Helix’s seasonal discounts and can be less than $1,000 around holiday time so you can save big.

What to Keep in Mind About the Helix Adjustable Base

  • It’s not ideal if you prefer a lightweight bed frame. Adjustable bases use electronics and metal and end up quite heavy.
  • Currently, it only is featured in a black color option, which might not be the best if you’re looking for a natural wood color.

Cons

Presets might need adjusting

Our Expert’s Take

If you’re looking for a sleek design that comes with plenty of presets, LED lights along the bottom, and a place to charge your devices, then the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra adjustable base is a great choice. Brooklyn Bedding makes a good number of beds that are all compatible with the Ascension Ultra, but any bed that works with an adjustable base can work with this base.

This frame is steel with some padding around the edges, and like many other adjustable bases, it comes with a remote that has presets. These presets can elevate your head, legs or both. But even if the presets don’t totally work, you have the option to manually adjust as well.

What our testers say: “Adjustable bases can look really bulky, but I was really impressed with the sleek design of the Ascension Ultra. It’s got some really great presets, and I felt really supported on this frame. If you have a thicker mattress though, it might not be a perfect fit. But adjusting this base felt great and I was very supported.” – Marten, Lead Reviewer

Who Might Like the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base?

  • It’s great for those who are after a full technology package: you can plug in USB cables to charge devices and it even has LED lighting under the bed.
  • It’s good for people who prefer adjustable frames. Set up is fairly simple and you have a lot of presets to use.
  • It has a very sleek, minimalist design that makes it blend in with your room, rather than stick out.

Who might not like the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base?

  • It’s not the best if you want a headboard. It doesn’t come included with one, nor do you have an option to add one to the purchase.
  • It’s not ideal for people who are looking for gentle adjustments. Customer reviews report that some presets were extreme.

Pros
Affordable
Easy set up
Lightweight
Cons
Not adjustable
Not ideal for fans of wooden frames

Our Expert’s Take

For those who want a simple bed to add some elevation, the Purple Platform bed frame fits the bill. Some platforms will be a bit lower to the ground and look more like a box spring with legs, but the Purple stands out thanks to its simple design and set up. Simply unfold the main pieces and attach them with a screw and snap the legs into place and you’re done.

The legs are 14” tall, and offer a good amount of storage below. Though simple in design, it’s a fairly sturdy bed frame and didn’t make much noise or sway at all during my testing. And if you’re shopping on a budget, this is a good budget friendly option. The biggest sizes (king or California king) don’t go much over $200.

What our testers say: “If you’re on a strict budget, or just need a simple bed frame, I really do recommend the Purple Platform bed frame. It has a very simple design and set up was a breeze. I was a bit worried about how thin the frame looked, but after shifting around on it a bit, it held both the weight of the mattress and my weight fairly well. I didn’t notice it swaying or make much noise.” – Tony Klespis, Reviewer

What We Love about the Purple Platform Bed Frame

  • It’s good for those who want a tall platform base. The legs are 14” tall and should allow for some storage space below.
  • This frame is very easy to set up. All you have to do is attach the two main pieces of the frame together with a screw—you won’t need tools.
  • It’s a good option for shoppers on a budget. A queen-size frame is roughly $200.

Who Might Not Like the Purple Platform Bed Frame?

  • It’s made entirely of metal so if you prefer a wooden frame, this isn’t the best option.
  • While some might prefer its height, it’s not ideal for people who prefer low-profile bed frames.
  • If you want to purchase a bed frame with a headboard included, this isn’t the frame for you. While the frame comes with pieces to attach a headboard, you can’t purchase one with the frame on Purple’s website.

What to Consider When Buying a Bed Frame

Bed frames and bases come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Let’s go over some of the factors that you might be looking for in a bed frame.

Material

Frames utilize a variety of materials. From steel or metal, to plastic and wood, there are materials that some people prefer over others. The bed frames on this list feature a mix of steel and wood. Some even come with padding around the edges of the frame to add some protection.

A wide angle shot of the Thuma Bed

Wood and metal tend to be durable materials, but be sure to check out the warranties. These can usually inform you on how long the company expects a frame to last. Most of the frames on this list come with a warranty and range from just one year and go up to 10.

Design

A bed frame design helps inform you of what type of mattress it might be compatible with. The frames on this list range from adjustable to platform. Adjustable frames can hold any mattress, but if you want to utilize the adjustable presets, you need to make sure your mattress is designed to work with an adjustable bed frame.

Size

You don’t have to worry about a company not selling the right size, as most range from twin to California king. Size also deals with height and potential storage space underneath the bed frame.

Price

Prices can range pretty wide for bed frames. For a queen-size frame, the lowest frame on this list hovers around $200, while the most expensive is almost like buying a new mattress at about $1,500. Just like mattresses, keeping your budget in mind is key. Be sure to consider shopping around big holidays like Black Friday, Memorial and Labor Day, and the Fourth of July to name a few. Brands will often offer large discounts to help you save.

There are some companies that offer financing or “by now pay later” options through third-party financers such as Klarna or Affirm.

Assembly

These days many companies are moving away from complicated assembly. Some options on this list (Thuma and Birch) don’t even feature metal screws and use Japanese joinery, which is a way to assemble pieces of wood together by simply sliding pieces into place.

A close up of a corner from Thuma, showing off the Japanese joinery.

All of the frames on this list are fairly simple to assemble as well, be it unfolding and attaching with a single screw or twisting on legs to a frame. But I should point out that some frames, while simple in assembly, are quite heavy. It’s still best to assemble and do any lifting with someone present or close by.

A man unfolds the Purple Platform bed frame after it has been attached.
Some frames just need to be attached and unfolded.

Types of Bed Frames

This list features adjustable and platform bed frames, but there are a few others out there that you might be familiar with or even interested in. Let’s go over a few examples.

Platform

The most simple and common type of bed frame. These can be made from a variety of materials, but usually just offer a flat, elevated surface for your bed to rest on. The height can range from 6” to 18”.

PlatformBedImage2
An example of a platform bed frame.

Canopy

Similar to a four poster bed, canopy bed frames have posts in each corner of a bed frame that are connected. Usually canopies will feature a type of fabric that is draped across these posts.

Adjustable

It’s common for adjustable bed frames to be electric and come with remotes that have presets. Some settings include an anti-snore option, which elevates your torso to relieve some stress on your airways.

A man uses the Zero Gravity feature on the Brooklyn Bedding Adjustable Base

Other settings include helping you find a more comfortable position while you sleep. You almost always aren’t limited to presets, too. Many adjustable frames, especially those on this list, have manual options that allow you to customize your experience.

Storage

Some people don’t have the storage space in their living environment for everything, so utilizing the space under their beds is key. Many frames on this list should allow room for some small to medium-sized storage bins. But there are frames that include drawers specifically for storage.

Sleigh

This is where bed frames begin to get more elaborate. They contain several pieces and often include a headboard and footboard. Some sleigh bed frames might work as an outer “shell” of sorts to surround adjustable bed frames for those looking for the best of both worlds.

The Best Bed Frames FAQs

What is the best material for bed frames?

Wood or steel. All the options on this list include either material and that’s because high-quality wood is very sturdy and supportive. Metal or steel is very durable, albeit hefty, that should keep your bed supported. Wood is better for light sleepers or people who toss and turn as it won’t make noise after some time.

How much do bed frames cost?

A high-quality bed frame will run you, at least, about $200. The Purple Platform bed frame is one of the more affordable picks on this list and a queen is roughly $200. However, some bed frames can go upwards of $1,000 depending on the materials, certifications or features.

Is it worth buying a good bed frame?

In my expert opinion, yes. Lower-quality bed frames aren’t as durable and might not support the combined weight of you and your mattress. I’m sure we’ve all experienced a cheap metal frame that starts to bend when too much pressure is applied. And low-quality wooden frames can splinter or break over time.

Is it better to have a higher or lower bed frame?

This boils down to personal preference. If you’re looking for a minimalist look and prefer to be low to the ground, low-profile bed frames are the way to go. But if you need storage or just prefer to sleep higher off the ground, taller bed frames exist. Some of the bed frames on this list can be either low or tall as they come with adjustable legs.

Loftie Lamp Overview

As a company, Loftie encourages people to break up with their cell phone alarms and wake up with light and gentle sound. Loftie sells two products: the Loftie clock and the Loftie lamp. Both of them can pair with your smartphone so that you can easily adjust and preset the settings, which means you can leave your phone away from your bed.

We named the Loftie clock one of the best sunrise alarm clocks because of its sleek design and numerous white noise functions. The Loftie lamp can wake you up with light, but it has some additional features that some users may prefer. Here’s a quick rundown of the pros and cons of the Loftie lamp:

ProsCons
Can choose from 13 different sunrise color gradients, all representing different places across the worldCosts about $250, which may be too pricey for some people
Easy to set upRequires a strong wifi connection
Has a sleek look that works in almost any bedroom aestheticYou can only set the color gradients for sunrise
Has a red light setting that helps sleepers avoid blue light before bedtimeDoesn’t play white noise like the Loftie Clock does

Loftie Lamp Features

The Loftie isn’t your typical lamp. Here’s a look at all of its unique features.

Sunrise Alarm

The sunrise alarm allows sleepers to wake up gradually, as if by the sun. Light exposure first thing in the morning can help you feel more alert and focused. It’s also a great option for people who are hearing impaired.

Loftie has 13 different sunrise gradients to choose from, and they are all inspired by beautiful destinations across the globe. The Bali-inspired light features violet, pink and orange, while the Santorini-inspired gradient includes shades of blue and yellow.

Sunset Bed Signal

The sunset bed signal can help sleepers maintain a consistent sleep schedule, which is an important element of good sleep hygiene. When the dreamy light shines through the lamp, it acts as a reminder to unwind and relax before bed.

Therapeutic Red Light

Red light therapy can help people who deal with insomnia and sleep apnea. But even if you don’t have a sleep condition, the Loftie’s red light setting can help you avoid blue light before bed and get better sleep. Often emitted by cellphones and TVs, blue light can disrupt melatonin production and make it more difficult to fall asleep at night.

Reading Mode

This setting is ideal for everyday use. It’s gentler than the full light mode, making it great for reading and relaxing.

Personal Experience with the Loftie Lamp

I love all of the different sunrise settings the Loftie lamp has to offer. The Joshua Tree setting features a blend of purple and orange hues, which makes me feel like I’m on a relaxing vacation. And it was super easy to set up the Loftie lamp. All I had to do was attach the base and shade—no lightbulb required. Its sleek design looks great in my bedroom, and I can see it working in a variety of bedroom aesthetics.

The sunrise setting lasts  nine minutes. The light gently woke me up, and I found that I didn’t even need to set a backup phone alarm. But because I don’t have the best wifi connection in my apartment, I had to  re-pair my phone’s bluetooth to the Loftie multiple times. Each time it disconnected, I had to type in my wifi password again. This issue resolved after about a week of use, but it was annoying to have to continually re-connect the lamp to my phone.

I was also disappointed that you can’t customize the colors when you use wind down mode. This setting gradually dims a pleasant mix of colors for nine minutes, which acts as a reminder to get ready for bed. Though the colors are calming, I wish I could choose the specific color settings like I can with the sunrise setting.

Overall, the Loftie Lamp is a great choice if you’re looking for a soothing and aesthetically pleasing sunrise alarm lamp. I appreciated that I didn’t have to look at my phone first thing in the morning, and I found that the reading light mode was perfect for everyday use. If you don’t want to pay the $250 price tag and you want white noise features, I would recommend getting the $150 Loftie clock instead.

Loftie Lamp Dimensions and Weight

The Loftie lamp measures 16″ H x 11.5” W x 9” D. The lamp’s base is 4” in diameter.

The Loftie lamp weighs 2.12 lb.

Loftie Company Policies

Before buying the Loftie, it’s a good idea to read the company’s policies. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect:

Price

The Loftie lamp costs about $250. You can choose between a white and black perforated steel shade. Keep in mind that the brand offers discounts periodically.

Shipping

Loftie offers free shipping on all purchases made through their website.

Returns

There is a 60-day return window. If you are unhappy with your purchase during this timeframe, you can return it and get a full refund.

Warranty

The Loftie lamp is backed by a one-year warranty, which covers the repair and replacement of the lamp. . Certain exceptions include: damage occurred during transportation or storage, damage due to improper use, damage caused by unauthorized repair, normal wear and tear and damage caused by accidents.

Customers have the option to add accidental damage protection for $24.99 per year, $42.99 for two years and $64.99 for three years.

FAQs

What is a Loftie lamp?

The Loftie lamp is a sunrise and sunset lamp that helps sleepers fall asleep and wake up without their cellphones. The lamp has many unique features, such as a calming red light setting and wind down mode.

Nest Silk Cloud Comforter Overview

Nest Bedding is a company that makes eco-friendly mattresses and other bedding. We’ve reviewed the Nest Bedding Sparrow mattress and both of the Easy Breather pillows. If you are looking for products that are eco-friendly or certified organic, Nest Bedding is a good company to consider.

For this review I’ll be focusing on the Silk Cloud comforter, one of two comforters that the company provides. Here’s a quick overview to give you an idea of who this comforter is good for, and who might need to consider something else:

Hot sleepersPeople who want color options without a duvet cover
Fans of all-white beddingShoppers on a budget

Nest Silk Cloud Comforter Materials

Let’s take a look at the high-quality materials that go into making the Nest Silk Cloud comforter.

Cover

On the outside, Nest uses 100% organic cotton for the cover. This cotton has been woven into a sateen weave, and has a thread count of 300. The sateen weave gives this cover a soft, satin-like finish and an almost silky feel. The thread count only indicates how breathable this fabric is, and the lower a number is, the more breathable a fabric will be. All this to say, the cover shouldn’t trap a lot of heat.

An image of the cover of the Nest Silk Cloud comforter.

RELATED: The Best Thread Count for Sheets

Unlike other comforters, this is not sewn through with a baffle box construction, but overall, the fill doesn’t shift around much. There are also loops in the corner to attach a duvet cover. Because the comforter only comes in white, if you’re looking for a splash of color, you’ll have to do it with a duvet cover.

Fill

Within this cotton cover, you’ll find 100% Mulberry silk fibers. This fill is vastly different from the typical down or down alternative you find in other comforters. Silk threads feel a bit more dense and don’t get as fluffy as down or down alternative.

A hand squeezes the Nest Silk Cloud Comforter to show the fluff.

Warmth

This comforter is more on the lightweight end of the comforter spectrum. It feels more like sleeping with a thick blanket. Having said that, it still provides ample amounts of warmth. If you prefer lightweight comforters, the Silk Cloud comforter will still keep you cozy.

Allergies/Allergens?

Silk is a naturally hypoallergenic material, and cotton isn’t known to trap or attract allergens in your sleep environment. If you have sensitive skin or sensitive allergies, this should be a safe comforter to use.

30-60 Min Nap with the Nest Silk Cloud Comforter

When you hear the words “silk comforter” you might think that the outer shell of the comforter is made of silk. But silk can also act as a fill for comforters, too. When it came time to test the Nest comforter, my first instinct was to see how fluffy the silk fill was.

Honestly, you’re not going to get much, if any, fluff from this comforter. But I’ve found that super fluffy comforters trap more heat. And as someone who runs hot, this more lightweight comforter was very appealing. The cotton cover has a bit of a crispness to it, but it still feels very soft as well.

I actually started out my testing while I was working. I draped the comforter over my legs, put a pillow on my lap and my laptop on top of that. Usually when this happens, my thighs start burning up in minutes because of the added heat from the pillow and whatever heat it’s absorbing from my laptop. But I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed virtually no heat transfer after about 30 minutes of work.

An image of a man sleeping with the Nest Silk Cloud Comforter.

When it came time to actually nap and after I removed the pillow and laptop, I found myself at a very comfortable temperature. I still felt cozy with this comforter, but overheating was not going to be an issue here. I tend to prefer lightweight comforters for this reason, so it’s no surprise that I enjoyed using it.

One other thing I think worth mentioning is that the fill stays very evenly distributed. The cover isn’t sewn through with a box design, which may cause some concern about the fill bunching in corners. But I didn’t notice that happening at all.

Caring for the Nest Silk Cloud Comforter

Unfortunately, you cannot machine-wash the Nest Silk Cloud comforter. Nest recommends spot cleaning or dry cleaning.

If there are no other options available, and you must machine-wash, Nest mentions that you should machine wash on a rinse cycle and do not spin. You can also use the dryer to tumble dry or let it air dry. But again, this should be a last resort.

How Does the Nest Silk Cloud Compare to Other Comforters?

Not sure if this is the comforter for you? Let’s see how this comforter stacks up against a down alternative comforter and a bamboo comforter from Luxome and Cozy Earth.

Nest vs Luxome

If you’re looking for an equally high-end comforter that also has a unique property that can sense when you’re getting hot or cold, the Luxome ClimaSense is what you need. When comparing it to the Nest Silk Cloud, the differences are there from just the visuals alone. The ClimaSense comforter is thicker and much fluffier, while the Nest Silk Cloud is thinner and more lightweight.

A man rests on his side while covered with the Luxome ClimaSense Comfroter.

Both are going to be good options for hot sleepers, however. The ClimaSense uses a unique material that can dissipate body heat, while the Silk Cloud is thin and only retains enough heat to keep you cozy. But if you’re a rare cold sleeper who needs a fluffy comforter, the ClimaSense should work better. If you’re worried about overheating and want a lightweight comforter, get the Nest Silk Cloud.

Nest vs Cozy Earth

Bamboo has become a popular material for bedding in recent years. Cozy Earth uses bamboo viscose in the outer cover of its comforter. Like Nest, Cozy Earth does offer a silk fill as an option, but you can also opt for a bamboo fiber fill. Nest only offers one option with the Silk Cloud.

Cozy Earth Comforter - A man sleeps on his side with the comforter.

You can also opt for a standard warmth or extra warmth models with Cozy Earth. So, if options are what you’re looking for, Cozy Earth could be the better choice. Sometimes bamboo can feel too slick, so if you want something with a more traditional cotton feel, the Nest Silk Cloud should be a better choice. And if you’re only looking for a lightweight comforter, the Nest Silk Cloud is also your winner.

Nest Silk Cloud Comforter FAQs

How long will the Nest Silk Cloud comforter last?

With good care, silk has been known to last upwards of 10 years. Though Nest only offers a limited 1-year warranty, this comforter will be very long lasting. The cotton is high-quality and should be fairly durable as well. Overall, I’d say this comforter should last several years when taken care of properly.

Are silk comforters worth it?

Yes. Silk comforters are going to be a bit of an investment, but the material is very durable and it has some good temperature regulating properties to it. The Nest Silk Cloud comforter is lightweight but still offers a good amount of warmth for those looking to sleep with something in addition to their sheets.

Is a silk comforter good for summer?

Yes. Silk has a natural thermoregulating quality to it that will keep the heat out when you don’t need it, but will also keep it in when you do. As someone who runs hot myself, I didn’t find myself kicking off the comforter.

When you’ve reviewed as many adjustable bases as I have, they really start to run together. Most bases have identical designs, and it is very difficult to tell them apart. That’s why I’m excited when I see an adjustable base with a little something extra–something like the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra adjustable base.

This base boasted some features I hadn’t experienced before, and I was interested to see how it all worked. Is this base something special? Read on for my full Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra adjustable base review.

Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base Review: General Overview

I have long been a fan of Brooklyn Bedding, especially the Brooklyn Bedding mattresses. The brand offers some high-quality mattresses that aren’t a big hit to your wallet. To go along with mattresses like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature and Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, the brand also sells two adjustable bases, the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe and the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra.

The Ascension Ultra is the brand’s most advanced adjustable base and boasts extra adjustability and a sleek design. Overall, I was impressed by the Ascension Ultra, but it is still not going to be for everyone.

Pros of the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra

  • Nice extra features
  • Good value
  • Great wall hugging

Cons of the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra

  • Only available in one size
  • Difficult setup
  • Slow to adjust

How Does The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base Work?

Let’s start off by looking at what the Brooklyn Bedding base is made of and how it all works.

Design

At first glance, the Brooklyn Bedding has a similar design to the best adjustable bases I have reviewed. It has a metal frame, two motors and a platform top made of polyfoam and fabric.

A shot of the Brooklyn Bedding adjustable base with the head raised

However, according to the brand, this is the “slimmest design on the market.” Taking a closer look, the top is thinner and sleeker than many other bases. Most bases have a bulkier platform, but the Ascension Ultra is definitely on the slimmer side.

Settings

Beyond the sleek design, it is the functionality that really makes the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra stand out. Of course, you can raise the head and foot areas of the base, but it doesn’t stop there. You can also control the tilt at the very top of the head section to zero in the elevation of your head and back.

Beyond that, you also have two programmable presets to create your own comfortable settings. You can also use the built-in Anti-Snore, Zero Gravity, and TV functions. And, like many bases, the Brooklyn Bedding has a massage function.

Finally, the base features USB ports and lighting below the base. With the USB ports, you can charge your cellphone, and the lighting will act as a nightlight if you need to get up and use the restroom. I tried out all of these features for myself, and you can read about my experience down below.

Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base Compatibility

An adjustable base isn’t really anything by itself. I judge a base by how it handles the weight of both a mattress and sleeper. According to the brand, the Ascension Ultra can handle up to 850 lb.

But, I really wanted to put this to the test. Instead of a Brooklyn Bedding mattress, I used a thick, heavy TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze mattress. With both the mattress and me on top, I was interested to see if the Brooklyn Bedding could handle all of the weight.

First off, with the base in its flat position, it had no trouble supporting the mattress and me. I got in and out of bed and rolled around, and the base felt sturdy and strong.

However, when I started to adjust the base, it had a little trouble lifting the mattress and me. The motor whined loudly, and I heard some creaking as well. This might be because it is a newer base, but it was noticeable.

A man uses the Zero Gravity feature on the Brooklyn Bedding Adjustable Base

Also, the mattress did not stay completely flush against the base when I raised the head and foot areas. A Brooklyn Bedding mattress may fare better on this base, but the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze raised off the base, especially in the middle.

How To Assemble The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Adjustable Base

Okay, this was a tough one to assemble. First off, most bases come in one box and, besides screwing on the legs, there is little to no assembly.

That was not the case with the Brooklyn Bedding. This beast came in two boxes, and they were both heavy. I thank my lucky stars that my coworker was there to help me assemble this base. When the box says “Two Person Lift,” it means it.

Putting the two pieces together was extremely difficult. You have to line up the two sections of the base perfectly or you won’t be able to bolt them together. We moved the pieces around for about 20 minutes and, even then, it was not perfect. Still, we were able to bolt it together and get to work on the junction box.

That’s right, you do need to do a little bit of plugging to get the Brooklyn Bedding adjustable base set up. You don’t need an electrician’s certification, but it is not easy. I weaved the wires of the foot section under the center metal beam and, after some sweating and a few choice words, I got everything plugged in. My coworker and I then sat down for a cold drink and thought about our life choices.

Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base Sizes and Price

The Ascension Ultra is only available in a Queen size which costs $1,349.

Company Policies

I always take a look at the fine print for any product I review. This lets me know how protected I will be if anything goes wrong.

Trial Period

There is no trial period with the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra. Most adjustable bases don’t have a trial period, so this is not unusual.

Warranty Info

If the base is defective, however, you are covered by a two-year parts replacement warranty.

Return Policy

Unless the base is defective, you will not be able to return or replace the Brooklyn Bedding base.

Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base Performance

My favorite part of reviewing bases is actually taking them for a test drive. I tried out all of the features of the Brooklyn Bedding. While some of the functionality was great, the base was lacking in other areas.

Materials

As I said above, the materials are pretty standard in the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension adjustable base. That being said, the base appears to have a sturdy design. Lying on it and using the different functions, it felt durable and supportive.

Adjustability

The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra’s adjustability really stands out. I was able to raise the head and foot areas of the base with no problem, but it didn’t stop there. The tilt function let me incline the top of the head area just a bit. This was great for when I was sitting up watching television or when I wanted to give my head a bit more elevation when I was lying down.

A close shot of the Brooklyn Bedding adjustable base with the leg area raised up

Remote Control

There was a lot going on with the remote control, but I didn’t find it hard to use. There are plenty of options to choose from, but I was able to figure it out without the use of directions.

A close-up of the Brooklyn Bedding adjustable base remote

Wall Hugging

The Ascension Ultra featured some of the best wall hugging I have experienced. When I raised the head, the entire top part of the platform shifted toward the back wall. This kept me close to my side table, even when I was raised up. With some adjustable bases, there is no wall hugging, which makes it difficult to reach your side table for your phone or drink.

Noise

The Ascension Ultra was a noisier adjustable base. As I said above, when I adjusted it, the base made a high-pitch whining noise. All adjustable bases make some noise when you use them, but this base was louder.

It also didn’t help that the base moved so slowly. Raising the head or foot areas to their highest settings took almost 30 seconds. Hearing that whining noise for so long was a strain on my ears.

Zero Gravity Function

I loved the Brooklyn Bedding’s Zero Gravity function. It raised my feet up quite high and raised my head up just a tad. This eased pressure on my lower back, and I felt very comfortable. Paired with the proper mattress for back pain, the Brooklyn Bedding could help with those pain issues.

The TV function was similar to the Zero Gravity function, but it raised the head area up higher. This was my favorite setting on the base, and I am actually using it as I write this review.

Anti-Snore Function

The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra’s Anti-Snore function did the trick as well. I deal with sleep apnea and am quite the snorer. I usually use a pillow to elevate my head, but this setting raised my head to the perfect degree. Paired with my CPAP machine, it was effective and comfortable.

Massage

I rate a base’s massage function on its ability to vibrate through a thicker mattress. Testing it with the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze, I could feel the massage vibrations. I enjoyed how there were three settings and pulse functions as well.

Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base Pros and Cons

Again, here were the benefits and drawbacks of the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra adjustable base.

Pros

  • At less than $1,500 for a Queen-size, it is a great value pick.
  • The base boasts some extra features that make it stand out among the pack.
  • It featured excellent wall hugging, so I was never far from my side table.

Cons

  • It was very difficult to set up the base.
  • The base was noisy and was slow to adjust.

Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base FAQs

Can you use any mattress with the Brooklyn Bedding adjustable base?

If a mattress is compatible with an adjustable base, you can use it on the Brooklyn Bedding. You can use a Brooklyn Bedding mattress to be sure.

How do you put together a Brooklyn Bedding adjustable base?

You first take the two pieces out of their respective boxes. After you join the two pieces together, connect the electronics and screw in the legs. Then, flip the base over, add the retainer bar, and your base is good to go.

How long will the Brooklyn Bedding adjustable base last?

Based on its construction, the Brooklyn Bedding should last for at least 10 years.

In our fast-paced, interconnected world, the pursuit of career opportunities sometimes compels individuals to embark on epic daily or weekly journeys between home and work, often spanning hundreds of miles. This emerging trend, known as super commuting, promises financial rewards and professional growth but conceals a profound and often overlooked toll: sleep deprivation.

As the bleary-eyed warriors of long-distance travel emerge, we explore how super commuting impacts sleep, unmasking the surprising repercussions that jeopardize our health, productivity and overall well-being.

What is a “Super Commute?”

In a pre-pandemic world, anyone that traveled more than 90 minutes one-way to their place of work was considered a super commuter. But after the COVID-19 pandemic, the meaning shifted to a sometimes even more drastic commute, but on a less frequent basis.

Should you bring travel pillow

During the pandemic, many companies moved to a remote working environment, but as vaccines rolled out and symptoms eased, companies started ushering employees back into the office creating a hybrid working environment. According to a Zippia study, 74% of US-based companies plan to implement a permanent hybrid workplace.

This means that employees only need to come into the office a few days a week, but many of them have moved even further away, extending their commute. Some individuals take multiple forms of public transport or even engage in interstate travel via plane to get to their place of work.

At the end of the week, the hours spent in travel time could mean that super commuters are missing out on a couple of hours of sleep. If no proper sleep schedule is followed, this could lead to the accumulation of sleep debt and negatively impact their health.

The Buzz Around Super Commuters

While super commuting is something that’s been around for a long time, it recently reappeared in the spotlight after TikToker Sophia Celentano made a video about her super commute that went viral.

Sophia is a student living with her parents in Charleston but recently accepted a summer internship at the famed Ogilvy Health in Parsippany, New Jersey. The internship only requires her to be in the office once a week, and occasionally twice for events.

Instead of uprooting her life for the summer and moving to New Jersey where rent and living expenses are high, Sophia decided to super commute to the office via plane once a week.

Over the course of the internship, Sophia estimates that she will save $2,000 by super commuting due to New Jersey’s inflated rent prices and cost of living. She also believes her quality of life is better, as she gets to stay in Charleston with her friends and family during her summer break.

The financial and emotional benefits seem obvious. But with a 3 a.m. wake-up to drive to the airport and an 11 p.m. arrival back home once a week, the impact on her health and sleep schedule could add up.

Late Nights, Early Mornings and a Long Commute May Lead to Sleep Deprivation

A regular and consistent sleep schedule is a privilege not often enjoyed by super commuters, as their long commutes mean early morning wake-ups and late evening arrivals back home. A study conducted on 21,000 Swedish commuters found that long commutes led to an increased risk of sleep disturbances, exhaustion and stress.

BCOZZY Travel Pillow provides solid chin support

Unsurprisingly, a US study on long-distance commuters found that these commutes led to less time for physical exercise, which saw participants suffering from increased weight and decreased cardiovascular health.

Due to exhaustion from long commutes, many workers turn to caffeine to get them through the day. What they don’t take into consideration is how caffeine further impacts sleep, throwing them into a toxic cycle of sleep deprivation and caffeine consumption.

While long-distance commutes can wreak havoc on your health, working from home can also impact your sleep. While both long-distance commutes and working from home are hard to avoid in the 21st century, ensuring you are getting enough sleep and exercise can make a huge difference to your overall health.

The Consequences of Sleep Deprivation on Work Performance

A study by AASM found that getting less than the recommended amount of sleep (seven to eight hours per night), led to a decrease in creativity and desire to learn, reduced motivation, longer task completion times and reduced focus during meetings.

sleep deprivation impacts long-term health

While most professionals in the study recorded an average of six hours and 28 minutes of sleep per night (only 30 minutes less than the recommended amount), the loss of sleep over a week or month adds up to a significant amount, leading to a buildup of sleep debt.

Sleep also plays an important role in short-term and long-term memory, which is crucial to performing well in the workplace.

Final Thoughts

Super commuters often feel the benefits of the long commute outweigh the drawbacks. If you’re a super commuter, you should focus on fixing your sleep schedule to ensure you’re getting enough shut-eye every night.

RELATED: How to Get Great Rest on a Plane

One way you can do this is by using the long commute to sneak in a few more hours of sleep. Use your long plane, train or bus ride to your advantage by taking a power nap en route. Use a sleep mask to block out the bright lights, headphones to block out the noise and a sleep pillow for added comfort to drift off to La La Land.

What is Sleep Tracking?

The sleep tracker market is expected to grow by 18.2% between 2023 and 2032 and the popularity of activity tracking devices has skyrocketed in recent years. There are many types of sleep trackers available on the market, with the most common being wearable devices and phone apps.

These devices and apps track sleep using a variety of metrics, including heart rate, breathing and movement patterns. However, according to research, it’s unclear whether sleep tracking is helpful for improving sleep quality. Some studies have even looked into the association between sleep tracking and orthosomnia, or the obsession with attaining perfect sleep.

We were curious about the rate of sleep tracker usage in America, as well as consumer sleep tracking habits and views of sleep tracker effectiveness, so we sent out a survey and got 1,002 responses on the topic.

Key Findings

  • 111 of our survey respondents were sleep app users (11.1%) and 220 (22%) used a wearable device to track their sleep, indicating that about a third of  our respondents use a sleep tracker.
  • The majority of sleep tracker users made some sort of lifestyle change since using their sleep tracker, but less than half said their sleep had improved as a result of their sleep tracker use.
  • Over half (53%) of sleep tracker users agreed that they felt anxious when their sleep tracker indicates they get a night of poor quality sleep.
  • Women were 1.54 times more likely to worry about the quality of their sleep, and women that use sleep trackers were 1.75 times less likely to see improvements to their sleep than men.
  • More wearable sleep tracker users felt that their device was accurate (65%) than app users (55%). More people thought that their sleep trackers overestimated their sleep quantity than underestimated how much sleep they got, which was similar to what we found in our recent survey about sleep debt.

Most People Made a Lifestyle Change as a Result of Sleep Tracker Usage

Our survey found that 60% of sleep tracker users indicated they made some sort of lifestyle change since they began using a sleep tracker. The most common examples of these changes included going to bed earlier, limiting screen time before bed, avoiding caffeine, changing eating habits before bedtime, exercising more, implementing a bedtime routine and limiting alcohol intake.

Overall, 43.81% of wearable and app sleep tracker users somewhat or strongly agreed with the statement “my sleep has improved since using my sleep tracker.” 19.03% of respondents somewhat or strongly disagreed, leaving 37.16% expressing neutrality towards this statement.

Levels of agreement with this statement did not differ much between wearable and app users, with 44.14% of app sleep tracker users said their sleep improved and 43.63% of wearable sleep tracker users said their sleep improved.

Almost Two Thirds of Sleep Tracker Users Check Their Sleep Data Once a Day

A slightly larger percentage of app users (67%) reported checking their sleep tracker data at least once a day than wearable users (62%). Only 17 out of 331 sleep tracker users reported checking their sleep data more than once a day.

Most People Don’t Feel Stressed When Reviewing Their Sleep Data

Less than one quarter (24%) of respondents said that they somewhat or strongly agreed with the statement “I feel stressed or overwhelmed when checking my sleep tracker data”. That said, a significantly larger number of people (53%) reported feeling anxious when their sleep tracker said they had a night of poor quality sleep.

Interestingly, those who indicated that they worried about their sleep most of the time or always were more likely to feel stressed or overwhelmed about their sleep tracker data. The groups that had the highest level of agreement with the statement “I feel stressed or overwhelmed when checking my sleep tracker data” were also more likely to agree that they worry about their sleep “most of the time” or “always.”

Women That Use Sleep Trackers Were Less Likely to See Improvements to Their Sleep Than Men

Some research has suggested that the prevalence of insomnia is greater in women than men. So, we looked at differences in survey responses between male and female respondents. Female respondents in our survey were more likely to worry about their sleep quality and less likely to see improvements in their sleep from their sleep tracker usage than men. More female respondents were worried about the quality of their sleep, with 23% stating they do so “most of the time” or “always,” compared to 15% of male respondents. Female respondents were also more likely to respond that their sleep tracker did not improve their sleep.

Methodology

We surveyed 1,002 Americans over the age of 18 on their sleep tracking habits to investigate how many people use sleep trackers and how those that track their sleep view the effectiveness of sleep tracking. The survey was conducted through Connect in March of 2023.

Helix Adjustable Base Review: General Overview

Helix is the brand made for shoppers who have no idea what they need. The brand offers super soft mattresses, medium-firm mattresses and firm mattresses as well. While Helix is all about options, it only offers one adjustable base. And, at first glance, it features a streamlined design and some easy-to-use functions.

I tried the Helix adjustable base out for myself and found it to be a simple base without too many bells and whistles. This no-frills construction means it’s easy on your pocketbook, but there’s not much to make it stand out against the competition.

Pros of the Helix Adjustable Base

  • Great massage
  • A good value
  • Adjustable height

Cons of the Helix Adjustable Base

  • Not many extra features
  • Poor wall-hugging

How Does The Helix Adjustable Base Work?

I’d like to start off by talking about what the Helix is made of and how it works.

Design

Overall, the Helix adjustable base has a standard design that I’ve seen with most adjustable bases. It features legs, a platform and motors for adjustment.

Specifically, the frame is made of carbon steel, a very durable material. The platform is a mix of polyfoam with a polyester cover. Underneath, two motors and a hydraulic system are there for adjustability.

If anything sticks out about the construction, it is the legs. The six legs are adjustable, allowing you to choose four different heights. This will make it easy to fit the Helix into pretty much any frame. However, the legs seem weak. They are made of plastic and don’t offer the sturdy support of the wood legs I have found with other adjustable bases.

Settings

As I said above, the Helix is not a deluxe adjustable base. Still, it offers the features you find with most basic adjustable bases.

First off, using the remote control, you can raise the head and foot of the base. In addition, a Zero Gravity preset will automatically raise the head and foot to relieve back pain. And, you can program three more presets to automatically bring the adjustable base to your favorite positions.

The Helix also comes with a massage function. With the remote you can make the bed vibrate under your head and feet at three different intensities.

Other Settings

Unlike some other adjustable bases I have reviewed, the Helix does not boast many extra features. Besides the standard settings discussed above, it just features USB ports under the bed so you can charge your laptop or phone at night.

Helix Adjustable Base Compatibility

According to the brand, this adjustable base is designed to work with the Helix mattresses and any mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable base. I’m sure that the base works well with the Helix mattresses, but  I really wanted to put it to the test. So, I paired it with the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze, a thick, heavy memory foam mattress. If the base can handle the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze, it can handle anything.

First, the Helix adjustable base was strong enough to support the heavy mattress. And, even adding my not-insignificant body weight to the mix, I didn’t feel the bed shift or show any signs of weakness. While this might not be the case after ten years, the Helix was very supportive right off the bat.

Second, I used all the adjustable base functions while lying on the base and mattress. I always look out for bunching up around the center of the mattress. Some thicker mattresses will rise off the bed when the head or foot are raised. I saw a bit of this with the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze, but it did not rise too much off the bed.

All-in-all, the Helix performed well with the substantial TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze. This gives me hope the base will work with even the thickest of mattresses.

How To Assemble The Helix Adjustable Base

Whenever I receive a new adjustable base, I always worry about setting it up. I’m not the strongest nor the most handy with tools.

When I unboxed the Helix, I made the mistake of unboxing it alone. The box says to ask a friend for help, but I thought I’d go it alone. That was a bad idea. As I write this review, I’m still icing my lower back.

Still, I was able to get the base out of the box and lay it upside down. I used scissors to cut away the plastic ties and separated the bags and boxes of accessories. After that, it was an easy process of screwing in the legs and plugging in the AC adapter. I didn’t even have to pair the remote or do any extra techy work, so it was good to use right away.

Overall, even setting it up alone, the Helix build was straightforward and took only about 10 or 15 minutes.

Company Policies

Besides finding a quality base, you want to make sure you’re not getting tricked by the small print. Let’s see what terms you get with the Helix.

Trial Period

You get no trial period with the Helix adjustable base. This isn’t too surprising because, compared to a mattress, there is no break-in period. The Helix mattresses and other products come with a trial period, but not this base.

Warranty Info

The Helix comes with a 20-year warranty that covers any manufacturing defects. If you damage the base, put too much weight on it or use third-party parts, the warranty is void. You can use non-Helix mattresses with the base but, again, follow all other weight and use guidelines so as not to void the warranty.

Return Policy

You cannot return the Helix adjustable base unless it is still in the box. If you have issues covered under the warranty, the brand will pay for repair or replacement.

Helix Adjustable Base Performance

So, how well did the Helix base work? There are some pleasant surprises and some disappointments as well.

Materials

As I’ve said a few times, the design of the Helix adjustable base wasn’t anything very unique. Like the many bases I’ve reviewed, it was a platform, motors and legs. There was not much to set it apart.

However, the materials it features were still high-quality. Even though it was an affordable base, it was by no means cheap. The carbon steel felt sturdy and gave the base some weight, and the majority of the materials are high-quality.

Adjustability

When I adjusted the Helix’s head area, I was disappointed that it did not rise more. When I lift the head area of any base, I want it to come up to 90 degrees. This makes it easier to watch TV or just sit up in bed. The Helix only came up to about 45 degrees. This might ease your snoring, but you won’t be sitting up in bed.

A man adjusts the head area of an adjustable base

The leg area lift was much more impressive. It lifted up past 45 degrees and elevated my legs into a very comfortable position.

Remote Control

The Helix’s remote was simple but easy to use. Some base remotes look like a1990s cable remote. This remote only featured a few buttons and was pretty intuitive. If anything, I missed some sort of light-up feature because using the remote in the dark wasn’t easy.

A close-up of the Helix Adjustable Base remote

Wall Hugging

Some adjustable bases are designed to hug the wall when you raise the head area. The entire bed will shift to keep you close to the wall. This makes it easy to still reach over and get your phone or drink from your side table.

Unfortunately, the Helix had no wall-hugging to speak of. This isn’t a major issue, given that the head area doesn’t raise up much anyway.

Noise

All adjustable bases make noise when you raise the head or foot. Still, some are louder than others. Compared to other adjustable bases, the Helix was not too loud. It made a whining noise when I used it, but it wasn’t particularly loud. It was the same sound I have heard with most bases, and it did not vibrate the mattress or cause any other issues.

Durability

As I mentioned before, the Helix adjustable base features some nice materials. However, when it comes to durability, the base legs caught my attention. They are made of plastic, while other bases feature sturdy wood. While they let you adjust the height of the bed, I don’t know how they will stand up to years of use.

Besides the legs, the Helix looks to be as durable as bases from other competitors.

Zero-Gravity Function

The Zero Gravity worked well on the Helix adjustable base. It raised my head just a bit and my legs even more. As advertised, this did reduce pressure on my lower back. I wouldn’t say I was weightless, but it was very comfortable for a nap.

Anti-Snore Function

While the base didn’t have a specific Anti-Snore setting, raising the head area all the way up felt very similar to the Anti-Snore settings on other adjustable bases. I was able to make this a manual preset and it gave me the same relief I experienced with other bases.

Massage

Even through a thick foam mattress, I could feel the vibrations of the massagers. I tried all three settings and even tested out the timer function. This was nice because I set the timer, fell asleep, and the massagers turned off while I was passed out. It reminded me of those vibrating beds you used to find in roadside motels, but I didn’t need any quarters this time.

Helix Adjustable Base Pros and Cons

Again, here are the major upsides and downsides of the Helix adjustable base.

Pros

  • It is a very affordable adjustable base that offers the same standard settings found in most bases
  • The massage features are effective and work even through the thickest of mattresses
  • You can adjust the height of the adjustable base

Cons

  • It doesn’t have many extra features to speak of
  • It lacks any wall-hugging capabilities
  • The head area does not lift up very high

Helix Adjustable Base FAQs

How do you put together an adjustable Helix base?

It is easy to set up a Helix adjustable base. Ask a friend for help, and remove the folded base from the box. Then, turn the expanded base upside down and clear away all the extra pieces. You then screw in the legs, connect the power cord and flip it back over. Finally, put the batteries in the remote, and you are good to go.

How long will the Helix adjustable base last?

The base should last at least 10 years. And, if you have issues with the base, Helix offers a 20-year limited warranty.

Can you use an adjustable base with Helix?

Yes, you can pair a Helix mattress with an adjustable base. The Helix mattress will work with almost any standard adjustable base.

In today’s fast-paced and demanding world, stress has become an omnipresent force that affects us in many different ways. And when stress impacts sleep, it can lead to a variety of issues.

Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, have gained increased attention due to their potential to disrupt the delicate balance of rest and rejuvenation our bodies require. But can stress cause sleep apnea? Let’s examine the findings.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Before we dive into the link between stress and sleep apnea, let’s explore what sleep apnea is. While there are many different types of sleep apnea, they are characterized by the same thing—breathing stops during sleep, which wakes the person up. The tricky thing with this occurrence is that most people don’t even realize what has woken them up, which leaves many people with sleep apnea to go undiagnosed for years.

A man sleeps on his back, wearing a CPAP mask

Types of Sleep Apnea

There are three main types of sleep apnea that people suffer from, including Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), and Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome (CompSAS).

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

OSA is caused by the muscle in the back of the throat collapsing during sleep, which narrows the airway and cuts off oxygen intake. As soon as the brain picks up that the sleeper is no longer breathing, it wakes them up. This is one of the more common types of sleep apnea.

Central Sleep Apnea

CSA is caused by the brain sending incorrect signals to the body to control breathing. This can cause pauses in the breathing cycle, slower breathing or incorrect gas exchange. When breathing stops for long enough, it will cause the sleeper to wake up, often unaware of what woke them.

Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome

CompSAS refers to a condition in which the sleeper suffers from both OSA and CSA.

How Sleep Apnea Severity is Measured

Sleep apnea is measured using an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Those who suffer from mild sleep apnea will get a number between five and 15 on the AHI, which means they wake up that many times per night.

A man snores with his mouth open.

Individuals who suffer from moderate sleep apnea sit within the 15-30 range on the AHI. Severe sleep apnea is considered to be anywhere above 30 on the AHI, with most severe sleep apnea cases averaging about 47.

The Link Between Stress and Sleep Apnea

People with sleep apnea are more likely to deal with mental health disorders such as PTSD, anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. Stress and anxiety can also make sleep apnea symptoms worse, but there is currently no conclusive evidence that stress causes sleep apnea

Treating Stress and Sleep Apnea

While there is no direct link between stress and sleep apnea, we know that stress causes increased levels of adrenaline and cortisol, which can disrupt your sleep cycles. So whether or not you suffer from sleep apnea, reducing stress can help you to achieve a higher quality of sleep. These are some ways you can improve your stress levels and reduce sleep apnea:

  • Meditate – There is an undeniable link between meditation and sleep. Studies suggest that there is a 95% increase in the quality of sleep of those who practice mindfulness meditation.
  • Schedule time to worry – Sound counterproductive? Scheduling time to worry is a practice used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and is helpful for two main reasons. First of all, you don’t have to worry all day long because you can leave all your worries for the allocated time. Additionally, focusing your mind on the problems at hand for a dedicated period of time can actually help you to come up with solutions, which increases the chances of the problems going away.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeineStudies show that both caffeine and alcohol can impact your ability to get high-quality sleep and can put more stress on the body. By reducing or cutting out caffeine and alcohol, you could greatly improve your quality of sleep.
  • Journal – Journaling is another mindfulness practice that lets you put all your worries down on paper, essentially getting them off your chest. While journaling, you can also practice gratitude which helps to reduce feelings of stress as you focus on what you appreciate about your life.

If your sleep apnea symptoms increase and cause excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia or chronic loud snoring, then it may be time to consult a doctor for a more aggressive treatment plan. This could include:

  • Conservative treatments such as weight loss, sleeping aids, nasal spray or reviewing current medications that could cause sleep apnea
  • Adaptive ventilation devices
  • Sleeping mouthpiece
  • Nerve stimulators
  • Medication for Central Sleep Apnea
  • Surgery

FAQs

Can reducing stress help sleep apnea?

There is no conclusive evidence that supports the fact that stress causes sleep apnea. That being said, stress does cause increased levels of cortisol and adrenaline, which have an impact on your sleep cycle.

Does sleep apnea happen every night?

Most people sleep apnea deal with the disorder every night. However, some people with mild forms of sleep apnea may only  experience it occasionally.

Does elevating your head help with sleep apnea?

If you suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea, elevating your head can help keep your airways open during the night, preventing sleep disturbances caused by sleep apnea.

Can sleep apnea be triggered by stress?

There is no conclusive evidence that suggests that stress causes sleep apnea. However, stress can cause disrupted sleep cycles which can make existing sleep apnea symptoms worse.

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Mattress Video Review

Check out my in-depth video review to see me testing and using the mattress.

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Mattress Review: General Overview

TEMPUR-Pedic is a brand that is known for its proprietary TEMPUR material. Before every other mattress brand started using memory foam, Tempur-Pedic was already experimenting with conforming, pressure-relieving foams. But, many of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses have also been known for making people overheat. I’ve tried a few of the other models, and I can attest to this.

However, the two TEMPUR-Breeze mattresses are designed to combat issues with overheating. I have also reviewed the TEMPUR-ProBreeze, but the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze has even more advanced cooling properties. It was one of the cooler mattresses I have reviewed, but it did have its issues as well.

Pros of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Mattress

Cons of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Mattress

  • Stomach sleepers
  • Those with mobility issues
  • Value sleepers

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Firmness and Feel

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze is available in multiple firmness options—Soft, Medium Hybrid and Firm. I received the Medium Hybrid for review, and I’m going to talk about what it feels like.

How Firm Is The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze?

The Medium Hybrid version of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze was as firm as advertised. It scored a 6/10, which is just softer than the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress. The top layers of TEMPUR material are soft, but they are also dense. When I lay down, the mattress felt firm at first, and it took some time for the mattress to compress under my body. According to the brand, the mattress should soften up even more over time.

Sleeping On The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze

I started off back sleeping on the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze, and its firmness was just right. I slowly sank into the top layer of the mattress and felt it conform to my curves. The coils and thick foam also pushed back against my body, so I never felt unsupported.

A man sleeps on his back on the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze

Side sleeping was also a dream on the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze. I often have trouble bottoming out on soft memory foam mattresses, but I had no such issues on the LuxeBreeze. The TEMPUR material kept me in good alignment while also cushioning my shoulders and hips.

Stomach sleeping was not so great on this mattress, however. I did not get enough support under my hips and center mass, and it felt like I was bowing into the mattress. Stomach sleepers should look at the Firm model or one of our best firm mattresses.

What Does The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Feel Like?

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze lives up to the TEMPUR moniker. Like the other TEMPUR-Pedic mattress I have tried, the LuxeBreeze has an extremely slow-moving feel. It really feels like quicksand. When I lay down,  the mattress slowly let me sink in.

This feel is not for everyone, however. I like feeling the soft hug of a Tempur-Pedic mattress but, if you have mobility issues, this won’t be the mattress for you. The TEMPUR material makes it difficult to move around, and you could feel stuck in the mattress.

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Mattress Construction

I always like to get a look at the inner workings of each mattress I review. I pulled back the cover to see what’s really going on inside the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze.

Cover

Right on top, the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze boasts a SmartClimate Cover. It has two layers, and the top layer is removable for easy cleaning. It creates a cool-to-the-touch feel on top of the mattress.

Comfort Layers

Moving down to the top layers, you’ll find some soft TEMPUR material along with Pure Cool Plus technology. This draws heat away from your body and also helps keep you cool at night.

A cross-section shot of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze

The mattress also features Hybrid Material which provides the mattress with more bounce and pressure relief. In addition, there is a layer of Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary Ventilated Advanced Relief Material. This adds some more softness to the mattress and is designed to dissipate heat.

Support Layer

The Medium Hybrid version of this mattress contains double-stacked innerspring coils. These allow for more airflow in the bottom part of the mattress and provide a good amount of support.

Mattress Height

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze is 13” tall.

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Size Options & Price

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Mattress Performance

My testing of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze didn’t stop with firmness and feel. I also ran a number of tests to see how cooling and supportive it is.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

For a foam hybrid mattress, the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze slept quite cold. When I slept on the mattress, I could feel the cooling cover, and I did not overheat during the night. I often overheat on foam hybrids, but I can say this didn’t happen on the LuxeBreeze.

That being said, it did not sleep as cool as on the Purple or Avocado mattresses. The Purple’s gel grid keeps the mattress nice and breathable, and the latex found in the Avocado traps no heat. If you sleep super hot, you can also look at our best cooling mattresses

Motion Transfer

On your current mattress, does your partner wake you up when they move around at night? You might be experiencing motion transfer, as their movements travel across the mattress.

Mattresses with thick foam on top are usually great at isolating motion, and the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze is no exception. I placed a glass of water on one side of the mattress and pushed into the other areas. The water was not disturbed in the least.

This lets me know it should be a good mattress for couples

Edge Support

Besides motion transfer, couples should also think about edge support. If your mattress has a firm, supportive edge, you and your partner will be able to sleep toward the edge without rolling off.

While the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze didn’t have the best edge support I have ever experienced, it was still quite good. I sat and lay down near the edge of the mattress, and the foam only collapsed a bit. I didn’t feel like I was going to fall onto the ground, but I still slept a few inches away from the edge to be sure.

A man sits near the edge of the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze

Durability

TEMPUR material is known for being very durable, and the other Tempur-Pedic mattresses have lasted for a number of years. The LuxeBreeze is also more advanced than the other Tempur-Pedic mattresses, so it should last for even longer. With this in mind, the mattress should last for at least 10 years, if not more.

Off-gassing

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze arrived fully expanded, so there was no off-gassing to speak of. Even though it was wrapped in a plastic bag, it did not give off the chemical smell I have experienced when unboxing most online mattresses

Noise

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze was also quiet as a mouse. The TEMPUR material cut almost all sound, so when I moved around, I heard nothing. However, keep in mind that this model contains coils, which could start to squeak as they weaken over time.

Sex

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze will not be a good mattress for sex. It offers almost no bounce, and this makes it very hard to move around and change positions. Sexual partners will want a bouncy latex mattress or hybrid to give them ease of movement.

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Company Policies

Before buying any mattress, it’s always a good idea to look at the fine print. Overall, Tempur-Pedic offers some decent customer service terms.

Warranty Info

You get a 10-year limited warranty with the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze. This covers any mattress defects or extreme sagging with the foam.

Sleep Trial

The mattress comes with a 90-day sleep trial. If, between the 30 and 90 mark, you are unhappy with your mattress, you can return for a refund.

Return Policy

You get free shipping with all Tempur-Pedic mattresses and white glove delivery with select mattresses. If you have to return your mattress, you may have to pay to ship it back to the brand.

Common Tempur-Pedic Mattress Complaints

Most of the Tempur-Pedic mattress complaints center around the brand’s return policy. Some customers had trouble returning their pillows, mattresses and bedding and found the return policy to be confusing and misleading.

How Does The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze Compare To Others?

Before we finish, I’d like to do a little comparison shopping. The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze has many pros, but how does it do against the competition?

The Purple RejuvenatePlus is also designed to promote cooling, but it is a very different mattress than the LuxeBreeze. It features a plush pillow top, multiple layers of foam and Purple’s proprietary GelFlex Grid. This material is bouncy, and even more breathable and cooling than the foams found in the LuxeBreeze. However, it does cost a bit more than the LuxeBreeze.

Who Should Get The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze?

  • Those who want to save money

Final Thoughts

The TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze sleeps quite cool for a foam hybrid mattress. I loved side sleeping on the mattress, and it gave me that soft, conforming feel I have experienced with other Tempur-Pedic mattresses. However, I think stomach sleepers, those who want to move around easily and those aiming to save some money should keep looking.

TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze FAQs

Does Tempur-Pedic Breeze technology work?

In my experience, the Tempur-Pedic Breeze technology kept me from overheating. However, it did not sleep as cool as other mattresses I have tried. The Purple mattress, for example, was more breathable and cooling.

Can you flip the Tempur-LuxeBreeze mattress?

No, you cannot flip this mattress. It is only designed to rest with the cover on top and the base foam or coils on the bottom.

What is the difference between LuxeBreeze and ProBreeze?

The LuxeBreeze is the more advanced model. It features more cooling and comfort materials and comes in more firmness options. However, it also costs more than the ProBreeze.

Bed frames are an essential piece of equipment for sleep, but sometimes they can come with confusing instructions and multiple tiny pieces that can be hard to keep track of. If you’re looking for a bed frame with simple set up and plenty of storage space underneath, the Purple Platform bed frame is a good option to look at.

In my unbiased Purple Platform bed frame review, I’ll give you the rundown on how to set it up (spoiler alert: you’ll only need about five minutes), how supportive it felt and its price. Let’s dive in.

Purple Platform Bed Frame Overview

While Purple sets itself apart from other mattress companies with its unique gel flex grid, as seen in mattresses like the Purple RestorePlus and the Purple RejuvenatePlus, when it comes to bed frames, the product is quite simple.

Purple sells three different bed frames, but its most basic model is the Platform bed frame. If you’re not looking to spend a ton on an adjustable base and just need something sturdy and tall, the Platform bed frame is for you. Before I go into too much detail, here’s a brief rundown on who I think should get a Platform bed frame, and who might need to look for something else:

Who should get the Purple Platform bed frame?Who shouldn’t get the Purple Platform bed frame?
People looking for easy set upPeople looking for a bedframe with a headboard included
People who prefer metal framesFans of wooden frames
People who want a tall bed framePeople who prefer a low-profile bed frame

Purple Platform Bed Frame Construction

There are two main pieces to the Purple Platform bed frame, both of which are made out of steel. There are two plastic pieces that you’ll use to attach the frames together. The Platform bed frame also comes with a box of headboard attachment pieces. However, the frame itself does not come with a headboard, nor do you have the option to select one before purchasing.

A close up image of the pieces that attach the Purple Platform bed frame.

For this review, I received the queen-size Platform bed frame, which did come with the two metal frame pieces. Purple sells it in twin all the way up to California king. The full, queen, and both king sets come with two steel frame pieces, while the twin and twin XL only come with one.

How Do You Put the Purple Platform Bed Frame Together?

The Purple Platform bed frame comes to you in two main pieces, with two plastic pieces to attach them together. There’s just one screw for each piece, and you won’t need an Allen wrench. All you have to do is unfold the main metal pieces, extend the legs (which will make a snapping noise when they’re in position) and then place the two pieces together.

A hand screws in the Purple Platform bed frame with the plastic attachment.

The plastic attachment pieces are purple and have just one screw each. The holes to attach the frames are near the top. All you have to do is fit the attachment in between the two pieces and take the large screw and fasten it in place. This set up process took me about five minutes, which is really great for those who are looking for a quick and easy set up.

A man unfolds the Purple Platform bed frame after it has been attached.

Mattress Compatibility

The Platform bed frame, once fully assembled, was fairly light but it seemed quite sturdy. To fully test out the support this frame offers, I decided to put a fairly bulky mattress on top (which also just so happened to be from Purple). The Purple RejuvenatePlus is one of Purple’s most luxurious mattresses, and it is quite a hefty bed.

The Purple Platform bed frame already boasts 14” of storage space, and the RejuvenatePlus is quite a tall bed as well. So, right off the bat, I noticed how high off the ground I was. And if you choose to use a box spring, you’ll be even higher.

A man tests out the Purple Platform bed frame.

High-quality steel frames, like the Platform bed frame, can be fairly sturdy. After hopping in bed, I tested the frame out by moving around on it to see how it fared with motion. I didn’t notice the frame sway or make a whole lot of noise while I did so. In fact, there are plastic buffers along the legs that Purple mentions will reduce squeaking as well.

And with such a bulky mattress, and me being a heavy guy myself, both the bed and the frame supported my weight really well. Purple mentions that this frame can support up to 2,000 lb, so it’s built to last.

Even if you don’t have a Purple mattress, this frame will work well with just about any bed.

FAQs

Can you attach a headboard to the Purple Platform bed frame?

Yes, you can. The bed frame will come with a box of tools and materials you’ll need to attach a headboard to the frame. However, the frame itself does not come with a headboard, nor do you have the option to purchase one with the bed frame on Purple’s website.

How tall is the Purple Platform bed frame?

The Platform bed frame is 14” tall. This gives it plenty of space for those who need to utilize space under their beds for storage.

Do I need a boxspring with the Purple Platform bed frame?

No, you do not. The Platform bed frame is very sturdy and supports any mattress you have. However, box springs aren’t a bad idea if you’re looking for an extra level of support for your mattress.

TEMPUR-ProBreeze Mattress Video Review

To see what the TEMPUR-ProBreeze mattress really looks like in action, see my in-depth video review.

TEMPUR-ProBreeze Mattress Review: General Overview

Tempur-Pedic is easily one of the most popular mattress brands on the market. As a mattress reviewer, I get tons of questions about just how nice the Tempur-Pedic mattresses are. More specifically, are they worth the high price point?

While the TEMPUR-Cloud mattresses are an affordable option, the TEMPUR-Breeze mattresses are not. But, while you will spend more, you will also get some advanced comfort and cooling materials.

You can currently choose from the TEMPUR-ProBreeze and the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze. The ProBreeze is the more affordable of the two mattresses, but it still boasts some excellent cooling qualities. You can also choose between the Medium Foam and Medium Hybrid model. I’ll be focusing on the Medium Foam model in this review.

As a hot sleeper, I was personally a fan of this mattress, but it will work better for certain types of sleepers.

Pros of the TEMPUR-ProBreeze Mattress

  • Has a nice memory foam feel
  • Boasts great cooling features
  • Good for back sleepers

Cons of the TEMPUR-ProBreeze Mattress

  • Not great for heavy side sleepers
  • Comes at a higher price point
  • Could make you feel stuck

TEMPUR-ProBreeze Firmness and Feel

I’d like to start off by looking at the firmness and feel of this mattress. This will give us a good idea of what sleeping positions this mattress will be best for.

How Firm Is The TEMPUR-ProBreeze?

The firmness scale we employ runs from 1, which is soft as a cloud to 10, which is like sleeping on a rock. The industry standard for “medium-firm” is 6.5/10, and the TEMPUR-ProBreeze scored exactly this.

The top layers of the TEMPUR-ProBreeze are soft, but the TEMPUR material is not your standard memory foam. It feels firm at first and takes some time to soften up. Lying down, the mattress felt firm to me at first, but it slowly gave in under my weight.

Lightweight people should keep this in mind. If you weigh less than 130 lb, the ProBreeze might feel firmer to you. You might not be heavy enough to compress the TEMPUR material, and this could feel uncomfortable.

Sleeping On The TEMPUR-ProBreeze

Since I’m not a, well, light person (I weigh 270 lb), I had no issues compressing the TEMPUR materials in this mattress. Lying down on my back, the mattress slowly gave way to my weight. The mattress really took the shape of my body, and the top foam layer pressed up into my lumbar area. I felt support and comfort just where I needed it. See our best mattresses for back sleepers for more options.

A man sleeps on his back on the TEMPUR-ProBreeze

Side sleeping also felt fantastic on this mattress. Again, it felt a bit firm at first, but this feeling did not last. The TEMPUR foam cradled my shoulder and hip but, even being a heavier guy, I did not bottom out and press into the firm support layer.

However, stomach sleeping just didn’t work on the ProBreeze. The medium firmness wasn’t enough to support me under my hips. I felt my center mass dropping down into the mattress, and this made for an uncomfortable sleeping experience.

What Does The Tempur-ProBreeze Feel Like?

Like the other Tempur-Pedic mattresses, the TEMPUR-ProBreeze has an extremely slow-moving feel. This mattress has almost no bounce to it and takes a long time to reform after I press into it.

This feel is fun and comfy, but it is not for everyone. If you worry about getting stuck in your mattress, the ProBreeze won’t exactly put your mind at ease. Changing positions was a bit of a workout on this mattress.

TEMPUR-ProBreeze Mattress Construction

I zipped back the cover of the ProBreeze to look inside. Let’s see what the layers are and how they affect the performance of the mattress.

Cover

The top of the mattress has a cooling cover that actually feels cool-to-the touch. When I laid my hand on the mattress, it was nice and chill. And, lying down, I could even feel the cooling through sheets.

Comfort Layers

The TEMPUR-ProBreeze, of course, contains TEMPUR material. However, on top, there is also a layer of the brand’s proprietary Pure Cool material. This is similar to Phase Change Material, which is designed to pull heat away from your body while you sleep. This is meant to offset the heat-trapping properties of TEMPUR material.

A cross-section shot of the TEMPUR-ProBreeze mattress

Below that, there is a layer of Ventilated Advanced Relief material. This is designed to add more pressure relief to the mattress but not at the expense of your sleep temperature. It is meant to allow for airflow and prevent the mattress from trapping excess heat.

Support Layer

In this version of the mattress, the top layers rest on a layer of thick base foam. In the hybrid model, you will find individually-wrapped coils.

Mattress Height

The ProBreeze is 12” tall.

Tempur-ProBreeze Mattress Size Options and Price

Tempur-ProBreeze Mattress Performance

When I’m reviewing a mattress, I get into the nitty-gritty details. I test each mattress to see how cooling, supportive and durable it is. While the TEMPUR-ProBreeze scored high in some areas, it didn’t do so well in other areas.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

This seems to be the topic of the hour. Is the TEMPUR-ProBreeze cooling or not? Well, for a foam mattress, it is definitely cooling. I could actually feel the cooling materials when I lay down on this mattress.

However, how does it stack up against a latex hybrid or a Purple mattress? It won’t do as well as these much more breathable mattresses. But, if you want a memory foam feel and sleep hot, the TEMPUR-ProBreeze is going to be a good option.

Check out our best cooling mattresses.

Motion Transfer

If you sleep with a partner, you don’t want their nocturnal movements to disturb you and wake you up. That’s why you want a mattress that cuts down on this motion transfer.

Thankfully, TEMPUR material is fantastically effective at isolating motion. But, just to be sure, I tested out the TEMPUR-ProBreeze’s motion isolation using a glass of water. When I pressed into the mattress, it did not disturb the glass of water on the other side of the mattress. I barely saw a ripple.

This lets me know that this will be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support

This is also something that couples should think about when buying a mattress. If the edge of your mattress is sturdy and supportive, you can sleep all the way toward the edge without rolling or falling off. This means you and your partner can use every square inch of the mattress. You paid for it, so you should get to use it.

Memory foam mattresses aren’t usually the best with edge support, but I didn’t have too many issues on the TEMPUR-ProBreeze. It’s a thicker mattress with high-density foams, and it didn’t collapse too much when I sat near the edge. Lying down, I also didn’t feel like I was going to roll off.

A man sits near the edge of the Tempur-ProBreeze Mattresss

That being said, if you want excellent edge support, take a look at one of our best firm mattresses.

Durability

Durability is always hard to gauge because I don’t have ten years to sleep on the TEMPUR-ProBreeze mattress. However, based on its construction and materials, I can deduce how long it will last.

The TEMPUR-ProBreeze is a substantial mattress that features multiple layers of high-density TEMPUR material. Based on my research and experience with other Tempur-Pedic mattresses, TEMPUR material is resilient and will last for many years to come. I would say it will last for at least ten years.

Off-gassing

The TEMPUR-ProBreeze came to my place fully expanded. Unlike other online mattresses, I did not need to wait for it to expand and off-gas. This means it did not let off any of that chemical smell you may experience with some new bed-in-a-box mattresses

Noise

This mattress is about as quiet as you can get. It does not feature coils, and the thick TEMPUR material absorbs almost all motion and sound. I moved around and rolled around on the mattress and didn’t hear even one sound.

Sex

Unfortunately, the TEMPUR-ProBreeze is not a good mattress for sex. Sexual partners require a bouncier mattress to allow for easy movement. That is not what they are going to get with this mattress. It is slow-moving and lets you sink in, so moving around is not going to be so easy. If you want a better mattress for sex, consider a latex mattress or hybrid mattress.

TEMPUR-ProBreeze Company Policies

Whenever you’re buying a new mattress, make sure to look at the brand’s fine print. You don’t want to have warranty or return issues down the line.

Warranty Info

The TEMPUR-ProBreeze comes with a 10-year limited warranty. This covers defects in the mattress and premature sagging. It does not cover the expected softening of the mattress or damages caused by mistreatment of the mattress.

Sleep Trial

You get a 90-day sleep trial with the ProBreeze. If you have tried the mattress for 30 days, and it still isn’t working for you, Tempur-Pedic will help you with the return process.

Return Policy

Tempur-Pedic offers free shipping and white glove delivery with select mattresses. You may pay a fee for your return, however.

Common Tempur-Pedic Mattress Complaints

The main customer complaints I found were in regard to the return process. Some customers complained that the return policy was too rigid, and they were unhappy with their inability to return products for a full refund.

How Does The TEMPUR-ProBreeze Compare To Others?

Before you hit that buy button, make sure to do your comparison shopping. I’ve chosen a few relevant mattresses to show how the ProBreeze stacks up against the competition.

It features none of the cooling materials found in the ProBreeze and features a more streamlined design. At the same time, it offers the feel you expect from a Tempur-Pedic mattress, but at a much more reasonable price.

Nectar is one of the most popular memory foam mattresses on the market and provides a value alternative to the Tempur-Pedic mattresses. While it does have a bit of that slow-moving feel, it is nothing compared to the ProBreeze. You’ll sink into the Nectar, but the ProBreeze really lets you sink in while it conforms to your body.

Also, while the Nectar mattress does feature some cooling materials, they are not as advanced as those found in the ProBreeze. It will most likely sleep hotter than the ProBreeze. However, these extra cooling materials make the ProBreeze cost significantly more than the Nectar.

Who Should Get The TEMPUR-ProBreeze?

  • Hot sleepers
  • Fans of a super slow-moving feel

Who Should Get The Nectar?

  • Those on a budget
  • Those who want more bounce

Final Thoughts

The TEMPUR-ProBreeze was as luxurious as I expected. It gave me that slow-moving Tempur-Pedic feel, but I did not overheat. And, it was just the right fit for back sleeping. At the same time, I believe stomach sleepers, people with mobility issues and those on a tight budget should keep looking.

Having a sleep schedule is an integral part of excellent sleep hygiene. If yours has fallen apart due to travel, a new baby or anything else, read on to find out how to get back on track.

What is a Sleep Schedule?

A sleep schedule is a consistent routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Your body’s internal clock, known as your circadian rhythm, controls your sleep-wake cycle.

Importance of a Sleep Schedule

To reap the full benefits of cellular renewal, detoxification and mental integration, most adults generally need between seven and nine hours of sleep nightly. When you have a consistent sleep schedule, your circadian rhythm becomes regulated, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up at the same time every day. Your brain knows it’s time to slow down and your body readily starts to relax enough to fall asleep, which allows you to get more restful sleep more easily.

Circadian Rhythm and Sleep Schedules

Your circadian rhythm is a 24-hour biological cycle that responds primarily to lightness and darkness; it influences everything from sleep patterns to hormone balance and digestion. When your circadian rhythm is out of sync, it can lead to sleep-wake disorder, which may resemble insomnia. Disregulated circadian rhythms can also lead to mood disorders such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Benefits of a Consistent Sleep Schedule

We already know why it’s essential to have a sleep schedule. Curious about some of the more specific benefits? Read on.

Improved Sleep Quality and Duration

Your body becomes accustomed to a regular sleep routine, making it easier to fall and stay asleep throughout the night. This leads to better sleep quality and duration, which can positively impact your overall health and well-being.

Enhanced Cognitive Function and Productivity

Toxins are a result of normal metabolic processes in the body. One of the critical functions of sleep is to remove these toxins from the body, including those built up in the brain. Some of these toxins that build up in the brain are implicated in conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

Strengthened Immune System

When you get enough sleep, your body has the opportunity to repair and regenerate, which can boost your immune system. A 2022 study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that sleep impacts the environment where white blood cells—the cells that fight off infections—form, develop and grow. Additionally, sleep reduces inflammation, which is implicated in many chronic and acute conditions.

Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases (Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Disease)

A consistent sleep schedule can also reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and obesity. During sleep, your blood pressure and heart rate fall, hormones such as estrogen and testosterone are made and toxins are processed by your liver. A 2019 study found that for each hour of variability in sleep schedule, a person’s risk of developing a metabolic disorder rose 27%, highlighting the need for regular, not just enough, sleep.

How to Adjust your Sleep Schedule

If you need to adjust your sleep schedule, there are several steps you can take to make the transition easier.

Assessing your Sleep Needs

The optimal amount of sleep you need depends on age, lifestyle and genetic factors. Generally, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep nightly. To help you assess your specific sleep needs, Harvard Health recommends paying attention to your sleepiness during the day and keeping a sleep diary.

Setting a Consistent Bedtime and Wake-up Time

The basis of a sleep schedule is having a consistent bedtime and wake-up time. This consistency helps regulate hormones like cortisol, which affect how sleepy or awake you feel. And it’s not just the consistency that counts. Studies have shown that going to bed earlier rather than later has more favorable health outcomes, including a decreased risk of obesity

Optimizing your Sleep Environment

Cool, dark, comfortable and quiet environments help you get the most out of your hours of sleep. To achieve these things, you can use fans, white noise machines, blackout curtains or sleep masks.

Avoiding Sleep Disruptors

Avoiding sleep disruptors, such as caffeine, electronics and late-night meals as much as possible can promote more restful sleep. If you consume caffeine, stopping around midday is a good idea. Likewise, avoiding both blue light from electronics and eating within one hour of sleep can help you fall asleep and stay asleep. A 2021 study in the British Journal of Nutrition found that eating within an hour of sleep resulted in a twofold increase in waking up after falling asleep.

Couples with Conflicting Sleep Schedules

Even if your life and relationship goals align, your sleep schedules might not. Sleeping next to a partner can be amazing. However, conflicting sleep schedules don’t have to mean disaster for your relationship. Here are a few ideas on how to work with differing sleep schedules.

Prioritize Time Together

If you are in a relationship with conflicting sleep schedules, it’s essential to prioritize time together. Set aside time during the day or evening to spend together, even if it’s only for a short period. This can help maintain a strong connection and prevent feelings of isolation or resentment.

Consider Sleeping Separately

Have you ever heard of a sleep divorce? It’s when a couple decides to sleep separately. This could be beneficial if one person snores loudly and the other is sensitive to noise or if the two have different sleep schedules.

Plan Time for Intimacy

It’s also important to plan time for intimacy. When your sleep schedules don’t align, finding time for physical intimacy can be challenging. Make a conscious effort to plan time for intimacy, whether in the morning, afternoon or evening.

Learn to Enjoy Your Alone Time

If you find yourself alone for a few hours in the morning or evening because your partner has a  different sleep schedule, you could use the time for self-care activities, such as reading, yoga or meditation. This can help you feel more relaxed and rejuvenated, allowing you to enjoy your time together even more.

Tips for Maintaining a Sleep Schedule

Consistency is Key

Consistency will make maintaining a sleep schedule so much easier. Stick to your routine every day, even on weekends and holidays. This will help keep your circadian rhythm consistent, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up at the same time every day.

Implement a Regular Exercise Routine

Regular exercise can help you sleep better, as it helps reduces stress and anxiety, which can interfere with sleep. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise daily and try to wrap up your workout at least 60-90 minutes before bedtime (unless you’re doing restorative yoga or something similar).

Cut Down on Evening Screen Time

Harvard Health recommends avoiding screens two to three hours before bed. Any form of light, especially blue light from screens, suppresses melatonin production, making it harder to sleep.

Have a Bedtime Routine

People are creatures of habit, which also goes for sleep routines. Having a relaxing ritual that you start an hour or so before bedtime gives your mind and body cues that it’s time to slow down. Ideas to include in bedtime rituals include journaling, meditation or bathing.

Seeking Professional Help for Sleep Disorders

If you have trouble maintaining a sleep schedule, despite your best efforts, consider seeking professional help. A sleep specialist can help diagnose and treat sleep disorders, such as insomnia or sleep apnea, which can interfere with sleep.

FAQs

How long does it take to adjust to a new sleep schedule?

It depends. A good rule of thumb is to adjust your bedtime or wake-up time by 15-30 minutes each day, so it depends on how big of a shift you are making. If you are trying to go to bed two hours earlier than usual, it might take four to eight days to get there and then another few days for your body to recognize it as the new normal. Stick to your daily routine, even on weekends and holidays, to make the transition easier.

Is pulling an all-nighter going to fix my sleep schedule?

Nope. Pulling an all-nighter is not an effective way to fix your sleep schedule. It can actually make it worse by disrupting your circadian rhythm and causing sleep deprivation.

Should I just stay awake if I can’t sleep?

No, staying awake is not advisable if you can’t sleep. This can lead to sleep deprivation and make it harder to fall asleep in the future. Instead, get up and do a relaxing activity, such as reading or listening to music, until you feel sleepy.

Can melatonin fix my sleep schedule?

Melatonin can help regulate your sleep-wake cycle and make it easier to fall asleep and wake up at the same time every day. However, talking to your doctor before taking melatonin is essential, as it can interact with other medications and has potential side effects.
