Nectar Mattress Review: General Overview

The Nectar is one of the best bed-in-a-box mattresses, and it contains multiple layers of high-quality memory foam. This medium-firm mattress provides that quicksand-like comfort so many people associate with memory foam.

Based on our experience, the Nectar is one of the more comfortable memory foam mattresses on the market. It should be a good fit for mattress shoppers who prioritize pressure relief and contouring.

At Mattress Clarity, we rank mattresses based on hands-on testing in our sleep lab. Here’s where the Nectar has ranked on some of our 2023 roundups:

Nectar Mattress Firmness and Feel

Let’s take a glance at how firm the Nectar is and how supportive and comfortable it is in different positions. This should help our readers decide whether the Nectar will be a good fit for their specific situation.

How Firm is the Nectar?

In our experience, the Nectar felt like a 6.5/10, medium-firm. This is because the top memory foam layer is quite soft, and the layers get progressively firmer beneath that. Altogether, the medium-firm Nectar mattress exhibits a nice balance of comfort and support.

Sleeping on the Nectar

Back sleeping on the Nectar, we feel the memory foam layers conforming to the curves of our bodies. We also feel good overall support from the base layer and good lumbar support as well.

Side sleeping, we feel just a bit of pressure on our shoulders and hips. As we will discuss, this experience may be different for lighter and larger sleepers, but generally, this is a good mattress for side sleepers. Also, it’s great for pain relief and is one of the best mattresses for arthritis.

Nectar Mattress - Side Sleeping

Stomach sleeping, the Nectar mattress is too soft for us, and we can feel our hips and center mass dipping into the mattress. We need a firmer mattress to give us the proper support across our entire bodies. Overall, it’s not the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

What Does the Nectar Feel Like?

The Nectar features a slow-moving feel that one finds with many memory foam mattresses. Lying on the Nectar, we slowly sink into the surface and feel it take the shape of our bodies.

Average-Weight Sleepers: 130 lb–230 lb

Average weight sleepers should find the comfort and support they require when back and side sleeping. The Nectar is an especially good match for average weight people with hip pain because of its pressure-relieving memory foam. It’s also one of the best mattresses for teenagers.

Stomach sleeping, the majority of average weight people will need a more supportive mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers: Over 230 lb

Back sleeping on the Nectar, larger people who are closer to 230 lb might get the support they need. However, those close to and over 300 lb might need to find a more supportive mattress featuring coils in its construction.

Larger side sleepers will want to seek out a mattress with a thicker comfort layer. Their heavier weight could cause them to drop through the comfort layer and feel significant pressure on their shoulders and hips.

Stomach sleeping, heavier people will undoubtedly need a mattress that’s firmer and more supportive than the Nectar. They could feel their hips bowing into the mattress, and this may cause lower back strain over time.

Lightweight Sleepers: Under 130 lb

The Nectar mattress should be a good option for lightweight back sleepers and side sleepers. They should feel comfortable and supported in both positions. While some very light sleepers could get enough support when they are stomach sleeping, the majority of lightweight stomach sleepers should opt for something firmer.

Nectar Mattress Construction

Now, we will open up the Nectar mattress and look at what materials comprise it. We’ll discuss each layer and any standout features.

Cover

The Nectar’s Cooling Cover is made of polyethylene. This is a breathable material and helps keep the top of the mattress cool to the touch.

Comfort Layers

On top of the Nectar mattress, there’s a 3″ layer of gel foam. It’s not very responsive and it takes a few moments to reform after we apply pressure. So, what is gel memory foam? The gel infusion offsets the heat-trapping properties of the memory foam and should add some more cooling to the top of the mattress.

Nectar Classic Mattress - Construction

Below that, there’s a firmer, higher density 2″ layer of Soft Conventional Foam. It acts as a transition layer and eases sleepers down to the support layer beneath. It also dynamically adjusts to movement, making it easier to move around the mattress.

Support Layer

On the bottom of the Nectar, there’s a thick 7″ layer of base support foam. This layer is high-density, so it’s durable and quite supportive as well.

We recommend pairing the Nectar with the extremely supportive Nectar Adjustable Base.

Mattress Height

The Nectar is 12″ tall, which is about average for an all-foam mattress like this.

Nectar Mattress Performance

We put the Nectar mattress through several tests regarding cooling, motion transfer, and edge support. Keep reading to see how the Nectar mattress performed!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Nectar is an all-foam mattress so it likely traps some heat. That being said, the Nectar features a cooling cover and gel-infused memory foam. Both these materials should keep the top of the mattress from feeling too hot.

When we slept on the Nectar, we didn’t sleep particularly hot ourselves, but those who struggle with overheating at night might have this issue on the Nectar. Anyone who wants the best cooling mattress should find something with coils or latex as well.

Motion Transfer

Those looking for the best mattress for couples would do well with the Nectar. The mattress features thick, slow-moving memory foam, a material that cuts down on motion transfer.

We placed a glass of water in the center of the Nectar and then pushed it into the surrounding area. The water was barely disturbed. In addition, Marten lay down on one side of the Nectar, and Tanner rolled around on the other side. According to Marten, he did not feel Tanner’s movements transfer to his side of the mattress.

Edge Support

Sitting down near the edge of the Nectar mattress, it only collapses a bit. We feel secure enough to lean over and tie our shoes. When we lie down near the edge of the Nectar, we don’t feel like we are going to roll off and onto the floor. Considering all this, the edge support is impressive for an all-foam mattress.

Nectar Classic Mattress review - Edge Support

Durability

The Nectar is an all-foam mattress and doesn’t feature coils or extra-durable materials such as latex. Still, the foam in the base layer is high-density, so it should add durability to the mattress. Based on its construction, the Nectar should last between seven and ten years.

Off-gassing

The Nectar is a bed-in-a-box mattress, so customers can expect some mattress off-gassing. When we opened the Nectar, there was a slight chemical emanating from the mattress, but it went away after 48 hours.

Noise

Given that the Nectar is an all-foam mattress, it didn’t make any noise when we rolled around or changed positions. It absorbed the majority of sound, and the only squeaks or creaks came from the bed frame.

Sex

Couples who need the best mattress for sex are going to want a more responsive mattress that makes it easy to move around. Sexual partners might feel trapped by the Nectar as they try to reposition.

Common Nectar Mattress Complaints

Every company has its weaknesses, but we found it important to acknowledge some of the less favorable customer reviews of the Nectar mattress.

There were some customer complaints about the Nectar worsening back pain. They often found this bed too soft to support their alignment properly. While this may not apply to all sleepers, those needing a significant amount of support (such as heavier sleepers) will find a safer option in a firmer mattress.

The other most common complaint we noticed was that the Nectar traps too much heat. As mentioned in previous sections, the Nectar is an all-foam mattress. Foam material absorbs heat more than other materials, and this can cause some discomfort for hot sleepers. If you find yourself waking up sweaty and stuffy in the morning, then you may want to opt for a more breathable mattress model.

How Does the Nectar Compare to Other Mattresses?

It’s always a good idea to do some comparison shopping when searching for a mattress. Let’s see how the Nectar compares to some of its main competitors. You can compare Nectar to more mattresses by checking out our mattress comparison page and finding popular comparisons such as Nectar vs. Amerisleep and Nectar vs. Brooklyn Bedding.

Nectar vs. Purple Mattress

The main difference between the Nectar and Purple mattresses can be found in their comfort layers. The Nectar features soft memory foam, and the Purple features a hyper-elastic gel polymer grid that’s very unique. The memory foam gives the Nectar a more slow-moving feel and better pressure relief. The gel grid’s interesting design gives it a better balance of comfort and support.

Purple Mattress - Gel Grid

While our reviewer, Marten, thought that the mattresses were both a 6.5/10 in terms of firmness, this might differ for other types of sleepers. Lightweight sleepers might think that the Nectar is softer, and larger sleepers might think that the Purple mattress is softer.

Because they are very close in terms of price, people should consider their size and sleeping position when choosing between these two mattresses. However, Nectar often runs more promotions than Purple, so be sure to check out our coupons when considering the cost!

Who Should Get the Purple?

  • Heavier-weight sleepers
  • Combination sleepers
  • Those who want a more durable mattress

Who Should Get the Nectar?

  • Lightweight sleepers
  • Side sleepers
  • Those who prefer the classic slow-moving memory foam feel

Read our full Nectar vs. Purple mattress comparison for more information.

Nectar vs. Casper Mattress

The Nectar and Casper are both all-foam mattresses, but they’re different in a few ways. The Nectar has memory foam right on top, and the Casper features a more responsive polyfoam. Because of this, the Nectar has a slow-moving foam feel, and the Casper has a balanced foam feel.

Also, the Casper features a Zoned Support system while the Nectar doesn’t. This makes the Casper feel firmer when people are back and stomach sleeping and softer when they are side sleeping.

Casper Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

There are also going to be some firmness differences between the two mattresses. In our experience, the Nectar was softer than the Casper mattress. This might differ for much lighter and much larger sleepers, but most will agree that the Nectar is softer.

Who Should Get the Casper?

  • Back sleepers
  • Combination sleepers
  • Those who prefer more of a balanced foam feel

Who Should Get the Nectar?

  • Light- and medium-weight side sleepers
  • Couples
  • Those who prefer a traditional memory foam feel

Read our in-depth Nectar vs. Casper mattress comparison to learn more.

Nectar vs. Tuft & Needle Mattress

The Nectar and the Tuft & Needle are two popular bed-in-a-box mattresses, but their clear differences should make it easy to choose between them. First off, looking at the comfort layers of these two mattresses, we see some different materials. The Nectar features memory foam that gives the mattress more of a slow-moving feel, and the Tuft & Needle features Adaptive Foam, making it more responsive and giving it a more balanced foam feel.

The Nectar’s memory foam makes it better for isolating motion, while the Adaptive Foam makes the Tuft & Needle a better option for those with mobility issues.

Tuft And Needle - Construction And Foam Layers

In terms of firmness, we thought both mattresses were close to a 6.5/10, about medium in terms of firmness. Again, these mattresses might feel firmer or softer depending on someone’s weight, but they should feel close in terms of firmness.

Speaking of price, the Tuft & Needle mattress is more affordable than the Nectar. For a queen-size, Tuft & Needle costs $895.00 while a Nectar costs $999.00 (before discounts).

Who Should Get the Tuft & Needle?

  • Those looking for a more affordable option
  • Sleepers who prefer a more responsive mattress
  • Those with mobility issues

Who Should Get the Nectar?

  • Those looking for pressure relief while side sleeping
  • Those who prefer to sink into their mattress
  • Couples concerned about motion transfer

Nectar Mattress FAQs

Now, we would like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the Nectar mattress.

Is Nectar a good mattress?

We would definitely say the Nectar is a good mattress, but it is going to be better for certain types of sleepers. Side sleepers, couples, and those who like a memory foam feel are going to find it to be a good fit. At the same time, stomach sleepers and those who like a firmer, more responsive mattress should look elsewhere.

How long do Nectar mattresses last?

This depends on the weight of the sleeper and how often they use the mattress, but the Nectar mattress should stay in good shape for between five and seven years. Those who are worried about the mattress sagging too quickly should have their minds eased by the Forever Warranty.

Do you need a box spring with the Nectar mattress?

According to the company, the Nectar mattress does not require a box spring. If a bed does require a box spring, it will still work well with the Nectar.

Is Nectar or Purple better?

Neither mattress is better, but they are better for different types of people. The Nectar is better for side sleepers, fans of memory foam, and lightweight sleepers; the Purple is better for combination sleepers, larger people, and those who want something more durable.

Where can I try a Nectar mattress?

You can try a Nectar mattress in select retailers. If you don't live near one of these retailers, you can try the Nectar at home for 365 nights.

Does Nectar take your old mattress?

If you opt for Nectar's White Glove Delivery, they will deliver your mattress, set it up in your bedroom, and take away your old mattress. This service costs $149.
