Big Fig Mattress Firmness and Feel

Now, let’s take a closer look at the Big Fig’s firmness level and feel. We ran this mattress through a number of tests to see who this might be a good fit for.

How Firm is the Big Fig?

This mattress feels like an 8/10 on our firmness scale, or firmer than average. Because this mattress is designed to handle two 500 lb sleepers, average weight people may feel the mattress is even firmer. The foams are dense, and there are 50 percent more coils in the support layer than those usually found on a hybrid mattress. This results in a very supportive and firm mattress.

Sleeping on the Big Fig Mattress

Back sleeping on the Big Fig Mattress should feel very supportive and comfortable for heavier people. Sleepers who weigh less than 230 lb may think this mattress is too firm.

A man sleeps on his side on the Big Fig mattress

Generally, the Big Fig mattress is not a great fit for side sleepers. For average and lightweight people, the mattress will probably not have enough plush comfort to relieve pressure points. Heavier side sleepers should feel plenty of support, but may also need some added comfort.

All stomach sleepers should feel comfortable on the Big Fig. When looking for the best bed for stomach sleepers, it’s important to find something that’s firm and supportive. That way, the body won’t get out of alignment during the night.

What Does the Big Fig Feel Like?

The mattress has a balanced hybrid feel. The top layers are responsive with some bounce, so it is quite easy to move around on the Big Fig and switch positions. While it does incorporate foam in its construction, it does not let people slowly “sink” into the mattress like classic memory foam does. If people prefer that quicksand feeling, this might not be the mattress for them.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight sleepers won’t feel very comfortable while back sleeping on the Big Fig. It’s likely to feel too firm, causing hips to sink into the mattress and putting the spine out of proper alignment. Average weight back sleepers will prefer a softer mattress.

Similarly, the Big Fig is not a good fit for average weight side sleepers. People in this category may feel some pressure relief from the pillow top layer, but it will likely still cause pain on pressure points over time. Overall, average weight people may not sink in deep enough to activate the top layers, so it will feel firmer to them.
For average weight stomach sleepers, the Big Fig mattress could be a good option. The supportive construction prevents hips from bowing in too much, keeping a proper spinal alignment.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

The Big Fig was built with heavier people in mind, so it should provide enough support while back sleeping. The mattress contains durable foams and coils that should prevent larger people from sagging into the layers while sleeping on their backs.

Overall, the Big Fig seems more focused on support than pressure relief. That said, it should still be pretty comfortable for heavier side sleepers. The top comfort layers should give a boost of comfort, though it may create a bit of pressure on the shoulders and hips over time.

A major issue for large people is finding the proper support while sleeping on their backs. The Big Fig is an excellent option for heavier stomach sleepers. In fact, it’s one of the best firm mattresses for heavier people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Again, this mattress is made for heavier people, so if someone is lighter, this mattress will feel very firm to them. Lightweight people may feel they need more comfort while back and side sleeping. Lightweight stomach sleepers, though, should find the mattress is supportive enough to keep their spines in alignment.

Big Fig Mattress Construction

What exactly is the Big Fig made of? Let’s take a closer look at its construction, layer by layer.

Layer Description
Cover The cover is quilted with 1” of ThermoGel foam for additional cooling and pressure relief.
Comfort Layer #1 Beneath the cover is .5″ of gel-infused latex foam. This not only gives the mattress a responsive feel; it also promotes airflow and makes the mattress more breathable.
Comfort Layer # 2 Next, there are three 1” layers of polyfoam. These layers help protect against sagging and give the bed an extra boost of comfort.
Support Layer #1 The support layer contains 7″ of individually wrapped coils, which feel supportive, durable, and breathable. In fact, Big Fig has a total of 1,600 coils — 50% more than the average innerspring mattress.
Support Layer #2 The coils rest on a 1.5” base made of high-density polyfoam.

Mattress Height

The Big Fig mattress is 13” tall.

Big Fig Mattress Performance

We ran several tests to find out just how well the Big Fig mattress performs. Read on to learn more about its edge support, durability, and motion transfer.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

We found the Big Fig has good cooling features. The ThermoGel foam helps prevent sleepers from overheating at night, and the coil layer promotes airflow.

Motion Transfer

Overall, we thought the Big Fig isolates motion well. During our tests, we placed a full glass of water on one side of the bed. When moving around on the other side of the mattress, the glass was disturbed only a little bit. When we pressed into the mattress or rolled around, the glass did not move much.

Memory foam is usually good at cutting down on motion transfer, and the Big Fig has multiple layers of foam on top. We would say this is a good mattress for heavier couples who don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movements.

Edge Support

The Big Fig features a foam encasement to help with edge support. Because of this, it barely compressed when I sat near the edge. I felt very secure in this position.

I felt like I could lie very close to the edge without rolling off. As a larger person, I was glad to be able to use the whole mattress and really stretch out.

Durability

The Big Fig is made with durable materials that won’t sag over time. We estimate this mattress would last a long time.

Off-Gassing

It’s common to notice a slight smell when opening a new mattress-in-a-box. We call this off-gassing, and it was noticeable in the Big Fig mattress. After 48 hours, though, the smell completely disappeared.

Noise

We did not notice any noise when testing the Big Fig mattress. It’s possible the coils could create sound over time, but we don’t expect noise to be an issue with the Big Fig.

Sex

Those looking for a good mattress for sex will want something that feels bouncy and responsive, and they’ll find that in the Big Fig. Its balanced hybrid feel won’t make people sink into the mattress, so it’s easy to move around and switch positions.
