Puffy Mattress Overview

Since its founding in 2016, Puffy has been making serious strides in the bed in a box game; in a short time, they have become some of the most talked-about mattresses. While they now offer three mattresses, it all began with the all-foam Puffy mattress. If you want to learn more about Puffy, you can check out our Puffy mattresses comparison.

The Puffy mattress features a standard all-foam construction with three layers; they are proprietary to Puffy and are designed to provide both cooling and comfort. We enjoyed our experience with the Puffy mattress, but we think it is a better match for certain types of people:

Who Might Like The Puffy Who Might Not Like the Puffy
Light- and medium-weight side sleepers who don’t need as much comfort material Those who require a more supportive mattress
Back sleepers who need a balance of comfort and support Stomach sleepers who need more support under their hips
Those who prefer a mattress with a balanced foam feel Larger side sleepers who need a mattress with a thicker comfort layer

Puffy Mattress Firmness and Feel

Firmness and feel are two of the most important things shoppers shoulder consider when they are looking for a new mattress. Let’s take a look at how firm the Puffy mattress is, what it feels like, and how it works for average weight, heavyweight, and lightweight sleepers.

How Firm Is the Puffy?

In our experience, the Puffy mattress is close to a 7/10, just firmer-than-average – the comfort layer is soft, but it is also quite thin. Lying on the Puffy, we are pressing through the comfort layer and mostly feeling the transition and support layers. Again, a mattress’s firmness does depend on the weight of the user but, for us, the mattress was firmer-than-average.

Sleeping on the Puffy Original Mattress

When we are back sleeping on the Puffy Original mattress, it is offering a fitting balance of comfort and support. Our hips sink through the comfort layer, but the transition layer keeps them from sinking in too far. Also, the top memory foam layer is providing nice contouring, taking the shape of every curve of our bodies.

When side sleeping, we are feeling some pressure on our shoulders and hips – again, the top comfort layer is not extremely thick on the Puffy mattress. A good deal of side sleepers could feel some significant pressure when they are side sleeping on the Puffy, and this could make for an uncomfortable night of sleep.

Puffy Mattress - Side Sleeping

Stomach sleeping, the Puffy Original is not supportive enough, especially under our hips. Our center mass is dipping into the mattress, and we can feel some growing pain in our lower backs.

What Does the Puffy Mattress Feel Like?

The Puffy mattress features a soft foam feel that is also bouncy and responsive. While the mattress boasts a layer of slow-moving memory foam on top, it is not too thick. We are mostly feeling the bounce of the transition layer, and this makes it easy to move around and switch positions at night. Read our Puffy vs. Amerisleep comparison to see how it stacks up against another responsive foam mattress.

Puffy Mattress - Firmness And Feel

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

Back sleepers in this weight range should feel the same balance of comfort and support that we did. Their hips should sink in the correct amount, and the mattress should also provide good contouring and overall support. It is one of the best mattresses for teenagers who sleep on their backs.

Side sleeping, average weight people who are closer to 130 lbs should get enough pressure relief on the Puffy mattress. However, those who are closer to 230 lbs will press into the mattress further and feel more pressure on their shoulders and hips.

Unless they are extremely light and not much heavier than 130 lbs, stomach sleepers are going to need a mattress that is firmer than the Puffy. The majority of average weight stomach sleepers should feel their hips bowing into the Puffy mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Heavyweight back sleepers who aren’t too far past 230 lbs should get enough support when they are lying on the Puffy mattress. However, if they are closer to 300 lbs, they will most likely require a mattress with coils.

Side sleeping on the Puffy mattress, the majority of larger people are going to feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips. They will need a mattress with a thicker comfort layer to give them the right amount of pressure relief.

When they are stomach sleeping, larger people are probably not going to feel enough support under their hips. They will most likely need a firmer, more supportive mattress overall.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

Lightweight people should like the Puffy mattress for both back sleeping and side sleeping. They will surely get enough support while back sleeping, and they should feel a good deal of contouring. Side sleeping, they will not sink into the mattress so far, so they should feel little pressure on their shoulders and hips. Stomach sleeping, those who weigh less than 130 lbs might even get enough support on the Puffy mattress.

Puffy Mattress Construction

Now, let’s see exactly what the Puffy mattress is made of – we will look at each layer of the mattress and discuss how the affects the overall performance of the mattress.

Cover

The Puffy mattress features a polyester cover that is thin, breathable, and soft – it will not affect the overall feel and performance of the mattress too much.

Comfort Layers

The top layer of the Puffy mattress is something called Cooling Cloud – it is basically soft memory foam that exhibits some of that slow-moving feel we’ve all come to expect from the material. It is also infused with cooling gel to prevent it from trapping too much heat (a common issue with memory foam).

Puffy Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

Below, there is a Climate Comfort layer – this acts as the Puffy’s transition layer and is meant to prevent sleepers from pressing too far into the mattress. It is also designed to regulate the temperature of the mattress, keeping sleepers from overheating at night.

Support Layer

The Puffy mattress contains a standard base foam in its support layer.

Mattress Height

The Puffy is 10″ tall, which is pretty average for this type of all-foam mattress.

Puffy Mattress Performance

We ran the Puffy mattress through the gauntlet to see how it performed with regard to cooling, motion transfer, and durability – let’s see how it did!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

This Puffy model features an all-foam construction as well as memory foam in its top layers. Usually, when I see a mattress with this setup, I expect it to sleep somewhat hot. All-foam mattresses don’t leave much room for airflow, and memory foam is specifically known for trapping body heat.

That being said, the Puffy also features a breathable cover and a cooling gel infusion in the top layer of memory foam. According to the company, the second layer is also designed to regulate body temperature.

Putting the Puffy mattress to the test, we did feel like it trapped some heat. It does not sleep as hot as some other memory foam mattresses we have tried, but it might not be cool enough for those who have a habit of overheating at night.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is something all couples should keep in mind when they are choosing a mattress. A mattress that cuts down on motion transfer will allow both partners to sleep soundly on their respective sides of the mattress. If it doesn’t – well, get ready for a poor night of sleep.

The Puffy has some slow-moving memory foam right on top, and this material is known for absorbing motion quite well. So, we were not surprised that we didn’t see too much motion transfer on the Puffy mattress.

Take a look at our best mattresses for couples to see some beds that really isolate motion well.

Edge Support

This is another important consideration for couples and those who like to sleep all the way toward the edge of their mattress. First off, we sat near the edge of the Puffy mattress, and we did feel it collapse underneath our weight. Lying down, the edge of the mattress only collapsed a bit, and we don’t feel like we are going to fall off the mattress.

Durability

Considering its materials and all-foam construction, the Puffy should be a reasonably durable mattress. Its longevity will, of course, depend on how often it is used and how heavy the sleeper is, but it should last for at least five to seven years.

Off-gassing

Like some of the best bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Puffy comes in a cardboard box! Unpacking the mattress, it is normal to notice a slight chemical smell, and we did have this experience with the Puffy. However, we left the mattress in a well-ventilated room, and, after 48 hours, the smell had gone away completely.

Noise

The Puffy is an all-foam mattress, so we did not notice any significant noise when we moved around and repositioned.

Sex

Overall, the Puffy has more of a balanced foam feel, and it is quite responsive. This makes it an ideal mattress for sex, and partners should have no real issues moving around.

Puffy vs Purple

Construction-wise, the main difference between the Puffy and Purple Original mattress can be found in the comfort layers. The Puffy features memory foam over a more responsive transition layer, and the Purple features a unique gel grid over a foam transition layer. This gives both mattresses a different feel – the Puffy has more of a balanced foam feel, and the Purple is squishy and supportive at the same time.

Purple Mattress - Gel Grid

We also noticed some firmness differences between the two mattresses. In our experience, the Puffy is firmer than the Purple mattress – this will depend greatly on the weight of the sleeper, but we felt better pressure relief on the Purple. One thing to note: the Purple might feel firmer to light- and medium-weight sleepers as they won’t be heavy enough to really collapse the gel grid.

While these mattresses are so close in terms of price, the Puffy tends to be more affordable with available discounts. We see Puffy running promotions pretty regularly throughout the year, so keep an eye out for seasonal sales!

If the few hundred dollar difference between these options doesn’t help you make a decision, choosing between them will really come down to shoppers’ sleeping preferences. For instance, light- and medium-weight side sleepers and those who prefer a foam feel should go with the Puffy mattress. Those who need more support should prefer the Purple mattress, and it should also work better for larger people, especially if they sleep on their side.

Who Should Get the Purple?

  • Heavier sleepers
  • Those who need additional support
  • Those who want additional pressure relief

Who Should Get the Puffy?

  • Light- and medium-weight side sleepers
  • Those who want a foam feel
  • Those who want a slightly firmer mattress

Read our Puffy vs Purple article for a more in-depth comparison.

Puffy vs Casper

Looking at the Puffy and Casper mattresses, they appear quite similar – they are both all-foam mattresses with three layers and feature memory foam in their top layers. The main difference is going to be the Zoned Support system that is found in the Casper, but not the Puffy. This makes the Casper feel firmer and more supportive when people are back and stomach sleeping and more pressure-relieving when they are on their side. The Puffy feels more uniform, no matter what position someone is sleeping in.

Casper Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

There are some slight feel differences between the Puffy and Casper mattresses as well. The Puffy has memory foam right on top, so it has a bit of that slow-moving feel. The Casper has a responsive polyfoam on top, so it is a bit more responsive and bouncy than the Puffy.

These two mattresses are also very similar in price, but Puffy tends to run more regular promotions, which can make it a couple hundred dollars cheaper.

Who Should Get the Casper?

  • Those who want more of a balanced foam feel
  • Combination sleepers
  • Back sleepers who need additional lumbar supper

Who Should Get the Puffy?

  • Light- and medium-weight side sleepers
  • Those who want more of a classic memory foam feel

Read our Puffy vs Casper article for a more in-depth comparison.

Puffy Mattress FAQs

Now, we would like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the Puffy mattress:

Are Puffy mattresses good?

The Puffy mattresses are indeed good, but they are going to be a better match for certain types of sleepers. For instance, the Puffy mattress is going to be a good fit for back sleepers and light- and medium-weight side sleepers. The Puffy Lux should be better for side sleepers who need even more comfort, and the Puffy Royal should be a good pick for those who want something higher-end.

How long does the Puffy mattress last?

Looking at its construction and materials, the Puffy mattress should last for at least five to seven years, if not more.

Can you flip a Puffy mattress?

The Puffy mattress is not designed to be flipped - the base foam should be on the bottom, and the memory foam layer should be on top. The mattress will not perform correctly if it is flipped over.

Do you need a box spring with the Puffy mattress?

The Puffy mattress does not require a box spring and can be placed on any solid firm or foundation.

How thick is the Puffy mattress?

The Puffy mattress is 10" thick, the Puffy Lux is 12", and the Puffy Royal is 14".

Where can you buy a Puffy mattress?

Puffy mattresses are only sold on Puffy's website. They are not available in-store or on third party sites, like Amazon.
