Casper Mattress Review: General Overview

The Casper mattress is a versatile and comfortable foam mattress that works well for many different types of sleepers. This mattress has a zoned support system, which makes the bed feel firmer toward the center and softer near the head and the foot. This unique design helps sleepers maintain the correct spinal alignment no matter their sleeping position!

Overall, the Casper is a comfortable, supportive, and durable online mattress that deserves its spot at the top of the bed-in-a-box market.

Casper Mattress Firmness and Feel

One of the main things that mattress shoppers should keep in mind is the firmness and feel they are looking for. Let’s talk about just how firm the Casper mattress is and how this will make it feel for different types of sleepers.

How Firm Is the Casper Mattress?

The Casper feels like a 7/10 on our firmness scale, which is just a tad firmer than average. However, the firmness level will depend on the size of the person who is sleeping on it. A larger person might press further into the mattress, so they could feel like the Casper is even firmer; a lighter person might not press in so far and could feel like the Casper mattress is softer.

The zoned support system also plays a role in the mattress’s firmness level. Because the center of the transition layer is more supportive than the rest of the mattress, the Casper feels firmer while back and stomach sleeping.

Sleeping on the Casper

When I slept on my back, the Casper mattress felt like a great match. My hips sank into the AirScape foam at the top, but the zoned support system offered the lumbar support I needed.

Casper Mattress - Side Sleeping

The Casper also felt great whenever I slept on my side. The foam felt soft under my shoulders and offered the pressure relief I needed. When I slept on my stomach, I felt a decent amount of support under my hips from the zoned design. But even so, it wasn’t quite firm enough to keep my spine in the proper alignment. I recommend looking for one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers if this is your preferred sleeping position.

What Does the Casper Feel Like?

Overall, the Casper has a balanced foam feel. This means the top layers have a responsive feel but still offer plenty of pressure relief. I am able to easily move around on top of the mattress without feeling stuck inside the layers.

Read our Casper vs TEMPUR-Pedic mattress comparison to see how the Casper stacks up against TEMPUR-Pedic’s slow-moving foam. For another memory foam option, check out our Nectar mattress review.

Average Weight Sleepers: 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight sleepers should feel comfortable and supported in all three sleeping positions. People in this weight range should get all the support and comfort they need when back sleeping and all the pressure relief they need when side sleeping. In fact, they will find it to be one of the best mattresses for neck and shoulder pain. While stomach sleeping, average weight sleepers should even get enough support under their hips.

Heavyweight Sleepers: Over 230 lb

Thanks to the Casper’s zoned support system, most heavyweight back sleepers should feel supported and comfortable. That said, much larger back sleepers, such as those who weigh more than 275 lb, will probably want a hybrid or innerspring mattress. See our list of the best innerspring mattresses for some good options.

While side sleeping, larger sleepers might feel like the Casper is too firm, and they could experience heavy pressure on their shoulders and hips. Larger stomach sleepers will also need a firmer mattress in order to get the necessary hip support. Check out our list of the best mattress for heavy people for some ideas.

Lightweight Sleepers: Under 130 lb

The Casper Original mattress is a great choice for lightweight sleepers — no matter the sleeping position! Lightweight folks should feel supported while back and stomach sleeping, and they should feel plenty of pressure relief when side sleeping. The Casper is actually one of the best mattresses for lightweight sleepers.

Casper Mattress Construction

Now, let’s look closely at the Casper mattress’s layout. Here’s what you’ll find in each layer:

Layer Description
Cover The Casper’s cover is thin, soft, and breathable.
Comfort Layer #1 The top layer contains AirScape foam, a proprietary material that feels soft and responsive. It is also open-celled and ventilated, which helps sleepers stay cool at night.
Comfort Layer # 2 Below that sits Casper’s zoned support layer, a section of memory foam that feels firmer toward the center of the mattress and softer toward the edges.
Support Layer The support layer consists of thick, high-density polyfoam.

Mattress Height

The Casper is 11″ tall, which is an average height for an all-foam mattress.

Casper Mattress Performance

Just how well does the Casper mattress perform when it comes to cooling, motion transfer, and edge support? Keep reading to find out!

Cooling

Because the Casper is made entirely out of foam, it’s not as breathable as latex, hybrid, or innerspring mattresses. That said, it does have many impressive cooling features that help dissipate heat: The top cover is breathable, and the AirScape foam is open-celled and ventilated for enhanced breathability and airflow.

If you’re a particularly hot sleeper, you may want to consider getting the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow mattress.

Motion Transfer

The Casper mattress isolates motion well, which is great news for couples. If your partner switches sleeping positions during the night, the thick foams should absorb that movement and keep it isolated to one side of the bed.

Edge Support

The Casper mattress also has excellent edge support! It didn’t collapse too much when I sat near the edge of the mattress, and I didn’t feel like I would roll off the side when I slept near the edge.

Casper Mattress - Edge Support

Durability

The Casper contains high-quality comfort layers and has a durable base layer. Overall, we expect the Casper mattress to last seven to 10 years, which is about three years longer than an average all-foam bed.

Off-gassing

When I first unboxed the Casper mattress, there was a slight chemical smell. This is typical for bed-in-a-box mattresses, but after 48 hours, the smell completely faded away.

Noise

Because the Casper is an all-foam mattress, I did not hear any noise when I moved around or changed positions at night. Noise is much more common with hybrid and innerspring mattresses.

Sex

Mattresses that feel responsive and bouncy are usually better for sex because they make it very easy to move around. Because the Casper mattress has more of a balanced foam feel, sexual partners should have no issues repositioning. In fact, it’s one of the best mattresses for sex.

How Does the Casper Compare to Other Mattresses?

When shopping for the best mattress-in-a-box, it is an excellent idea to compare the different options. Let’s see how the Casper Original stacks up against its competitors. You can read more Casper comparisons like Casper vs Casper Wave Hybrid and Casper vs. Saatva by checking out our mattress comparison page.

Casper Original vs Purple Mattress

The Casper and the Purple are two of the most popular bed-in-a-box mattresses on the market, but they have very different constructions. The Casper is an all-foam mattress with zoned support, while the Purple contains the company’s proprietary gel hex grid.

Purple Mattress - Gel Grid

Generally, the Purple feels firmer than the Casper, but this greatly depends on the weight of the sleeper. Larger people might feel the Purple is softer and the Casper is firmer.

These two mattresses have similar price points, and they both work well for combination sleepers. Ultimately, the choice boils down to what you want your mattress to feel like. The Casper has a balanced foam feel, while the Purple feels squishy and firm.

Casper vs Nectar

Both Nectar and Casper are all-foam mattresses with an affordable price tag and quality materials. They have a similar construction, though the mattresses feel quite different. The Nectar mattress has a slow-moving memory foam feel, while the Casper feels more responsive.

Nectar Mattress - Side Sleeping

Overall, the Casper works better for side sleepers because the top layers conform to the body and help alleviate shoulder pain. The Nectar mattress is better for stomach and back sleepers because it is firmer.

Summary
Casper is perhaps the best known bed-in-a-box option with a latex over memory foam construction. The mattress is soundly constructed and delivered at great value. It is a solid mattress, but at this point I don't think the mattress (based on specs) really stands out amongst competitors, and isn't currently one of my top picks.
