When reviewing mattresses, we always thoroughly look at its firmness and feel. Keep reading to see whether the Zenhaven is the right fit for you!
How Firm is the Zenhaven?
The Zenhaven is a flippable mattress, so it has two firmness options; however, both sides feel similar in terms of firmness. The Gentle Firm side felt like a 7/10 and the Luxury Plush side felt like 6.5/10.

Sleeping On The Zenhaven
On the Gentle Firm side, the Zenhaven has good support for back sleeping. The hips don’t sink in too far, and there is comfortable support. For side sleeping, however, there is some noticeable pressure on the shoulders and hips. When positioned on their stomach, sleepers should feel well supported given the firmness of the mattress.
On the Luxury Plush side, most people should feel even better when they lie on their back. Their hips should sink in just the right amount while the top comfort layer supports their lumbar area.
Again, while side sleeping, there is noticeable pressure on the shoulders and hips. The amount of pressure is less obvious here than on the Gentle Firm side, but this mattress might be too firm overall for most side sleepers. Instead, people who prefer this sleeping position may want to take a look at the best mattresses for side sleepers. While stomach sleeping, I feel decently supported, but most stomach sleepers will prefer the Gentle Firm side.
What Does the Zenhaven Feel Like?
In terms of feel, both sides have a bouncy foam feel. The latex is very responsive, so it bounces back quickly, meaning that it should be very easy to move around on the Zenhaven.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
On the Gentle Firm side, average weight back sleepers should feel very comfortable. The firm feel provides enough support for the spine, so sleepers aren’t likely to develop back pain with use. While side sleeping, many average weight sleepers may notice pressure on their shoulders and hips. Average weight stomach sleepers, on the other hand, should feel a great deal of comfort and support on the Gentle Firm side.
On the Luxury Plush side, average weight people should feel even better while relaxing on their backs. Side sleeping, however, will probably still feel uncomfortable. Because the Luxury Plush side is only a bit softer than the Gentle Firm, it’s still too firm for this sleeping position. Average weight stomach sleepers will feel decently comfortable on the Luxury Plush side, but they will likely prefer the Gentle Firm side.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
For most heavyweight sleepers, the Gentle Firm will likely feel more like a 7.5/10 on the firmness scale, and the Luxury Plush side may feel like a 7/10.
On the Gentle Firm side, heavier sleepers should feel very nice overall support when they’re on their backs. The hips should sink in just the right amount. When side sleeping, there is some pressure on the shoulders and hips, while on the stomach, there is good overall support.
On the Luxury Plush side of the Zenhaven, there is also good overall support. It should be noted that there is less support on this side of the mattress than there was on the Gentle Firm side. However, even on the Luxury Plush side of this mattress, there is still pressure on the shoulders and hips. When stomach sleeping, there isn’t enough support on the Luxury Plush side of the mattress.
Heavier back sleepers, both sides of this mattress could work for you. However, we caution heavier side sleepers and think they should keep searching for a softer mattress overall. Stomach sleepers, the gentle firm side should serve you well.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Because lightweight people are less likely to sink into the support layers, they should feel comfortable on both the Gentle Firm and Luxury Plush sides. While back sleeping, lightweight sleepers should feel a good balance of comfort and support. Side sleeping, lightweight sleepers shouldn’t feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips. The soft cover is knitted with organic cotton, which fits with the Zenhaven’s eco-friendly construction.
Comfort Layer
On the Luxury Plush side, you’ll find a flame-retardant layer of wool. Beneath this sits a 1.5” layer of Luxury Plush Talalay latex. It is zoned, so the firmness will vary across the surface of the mattress, with more support under hips and a softer feel under the shoulders.
To make up the comfort layer on the Gentle Firm side, there is a 1.5” layer of Gentle Firm Talalay latex.
Support Layer
On the Luxury Plush side, you’ll find a 3” Talalay latex Plush base layer. Then, below the plush latex layer, there is a 3” Talalay latex Firm base layer.
On the Gentle Firm side, there is another flame-retardant flame layer and the same knitted, soft cover.
Mattress Height
The mattress is 10” tall which is about an average height.

How the Zenhaven Mattress Performs
How does the Zenhaven stack up in terms of motion transfer, edge support, and durability? Keep reading to find out!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
For people who overheat and sweat at night, the Zenhaven might be an excellent choice because the latex components make the mattress breathable, keeping sleepers cool while they sleep.
Motion Transfer
When it comes to handling motion transfer, latex mattresses don’t perform as well as a memory foam mattress. So, testing out the Zenhaven, we were not surprised that the mattress did not deal with motion transfer particularly well.
When we placed a water glass on the mattress and pushed into the surrounding area, the water was disturbed somewhat. Also, when Marten moved around on the other side of the mattress, our reviewer, Joe, did feel his movements on his side of the mattress.
People who sleep with a partner should note that it’s possible they could feel their partner moving around at night. It isn’t the best mattress for couples.
Edge Support
As a medium-firm mattress, we didn’t expect the Zenhaven mattress to compress too much when we sat near the edge. Sitting down, we did indeed feel like I could comfortably sit and tie my shoes.
However, lying down near the edge, we did get the feeling that we might roll off the mattress. This is worth noting if you sleep with a partner or want to use the full surface area of the mattress.
Durability
Talalay latex is a very high-quality, durable material, and because of this, the mattress should stand up to years of use. People who want a mattress to last them for some time should find this bed to be a good fit. It is more expensive but it’s a great value. Off-Gassing
When opening a new bed-in-a-box, it’s common to notice a slight chemical smell. Because the Zenhaven is made with all-natural materials, however, off-gassing was not a huge issue.
Noise
We did not notice any noise when testing out the Zenhaven mattress. Because it’s made entirely out of foam, we do not anticipate it to create sound over time.
Sex
Couples looking for one of the best mattresses for sex may want something they can easily move around on. If this is the case, the Zenhaven is a great choice. It has a bouncy and responsive feel, so people should not sink into the top layers of the mattress and feel stuck there.

Though they’re both made by the same company, the Zenhaven and Saatva mattresses have vastly different constructions. the Zenhaven is a latex mattress, while the Saatva is an innerspring mattress with a pillow top.
The latex gives the Zenhaven a bouncier foam feel than the Saatva, which has that traditional spring, pillow top feel. Because the mattresses are very close in terms of firmness, the Saatva and the Gentle Firm side of the Zenhaven both feel like a 7/10.

The Loom & Leaf is Saatva Company’s all-foam mattress. The mattress has a firmness of 6.5/10, which is pretty much the same as the Luxury Plush side of the Zenhaven.
In terms of feel, the Zenhaven has that bouncy foam feel, while the Loom & Leaf has that memory foam feel. The Zenhaven is much more responsive, and you will sink into the Loom & Leaf more.
The Loom & Leaf mattress is more affordable than the Zenhaven, but it won’t last as long.
