The Layla is really known for its flippable nature; it features a soft side that provides excellent pressure relief and a firm side that offers great support.

However, the Layla is more than just a flippable gimmick, and it is also an extremely comfortable memory foam mattress that boasts some interesting cooling features as well.

There is a lot going on with the Layla mattress and, with its flippable design, it is a great fit for multiple sleeping positions. One of the Layla’s sides should provide the comfort and support that mattress shoppers are seeking.

Layla Mattress Firmness and Feel

The Layla mattress is interesting because it is flippable and has two firmnesses in one. Let’s take a look at both sides of this mattress, how firm they are, and what they feel like.

How Firm Is the Layla Mattress?

The soft side of the Layla has a thick layer of memory foam right on top, so it is definitely softer than average — a 6 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, to be exact. In fact, because of how great this soft side is, the Layla often makes our list for the best soft mattresses.

Flipping the mattress over, there’s a thinner layer of memory foam and then a firm support layer beneath that. Because of this, the firm side is, well, firmer and feels like an 8 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale.

Choose The Soft Side If: Choose The Firm Side If:
– You are a side sleeper or lightweight sleeper – You are a back sleeper, stomach sleeper, or a heavyweight person over 230 lbs.

Sleeping on the Layla Mattress

The Soft Side

Starting off back-sleeping on the soft side of the Layla, the mattress is too soft for us. We feel like our hips are sinking into the mattress too far, and we aren’t getting the necessary lumbar support or overall support.

However, side-sleeping on the soft side of the Layla is very comfortable, and we feel almost no pressure on our shoulders and hips. In fact, we think it is one of the best mattresses for neck and shoulder pain.

Stomach-sleeping, the soft side of the Layla is entirely too soft, and we are not getting enough support under our hips or across the rest of our bodies.

The Firm Side

Back-sleeping on the firm side of the Layla, we are getting just the right balance of comfort and support. Our hips sink into the thinner memory foam layer, but the support layer stops them from going in too far.

Side-sleeping, the firm side of the Layla is way too firm but, stomach-sleeping, we are getting all the support we need under our hips.

What Does the Layla Mattress Feel Like?

The Layla mattress features soft memory foam so, overall, it has that slow-moving memory foam feel that lets us sink into the mattress. The feel will differ depending on what side someone is sleeping on. The soft side will let people sink in very far, but the firm side will make it feel like they are sleeping on top of the Layla mattress.

Layla Mattress - Firmness And Feel

Average-Weight Sleepers: 130 lb – 230 lb

Average-weight back sleepers are going to feel better back-sleeping on the firm side of the Layla, but they could get enough support on the soft side as well. They will get great pressure relief when they are on the soft side of the mattress and solid support when they are on the firm side.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavier back sleepers should prefer the firm side of the Layla mattress, and they should experience a nice balance of comfort and support. Side-sleeping, even larger people should get enough pressure relief on the soft side, but the firm side might not be supportive enough for the majority of heavier stomach sleepers.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Lightweight sleepers should think the Layla is a great fit for all three sleeping positions. They should get enough support and comfort from the soft side of the Layla when they are back- and side-sleeping. Stomach-sleeping, they should feel enough support under their hips and across the rest of their body. Make sure to check our list of the best mattresses for lightweight sleepers.

Layla Mattress Construction

Let’s take a closer look at what materials are found in the Layla and what they do for the overall mattress experience. We will look at each layer of this flippable mattress one by one.

Layer Description
Cover A soft cover infused with heat-dissipating Thermogel
Comfort Layer # 1 (Soft Side) 3″ of copper-infused memory foam
Comfort Layer # 2 (Soft Side) 2″ of support foam to provide additional airflow
Support Layer A thick layer of base support foam separating the soft and firm sides
Comfort Layer #3 (Firm Side) 1″ of copper-infused memory foam

Mattress Height

The Layla mattress is 10″ tall and is suitably thick for a memory foam option.

Cover

A soft cover can be found on both sides of the Layla mattress, and it is infused with Thermogel, a heat-dissipating material that should keep the top of the mattress particularly cool.

Comfort Layers

Because the Layla is flippable, it features comfort layers on the top and bottom of the mattress. On the soft side of the mattress, the Layla has 3″ of copper-infused memory foam on top of 2″ of convoluted support foam.

The copper infusion is anti-microbial and will also keep the memory foam from trapping a significant amount of heat. In addition, the convoluted support foam leaves some room for air to flow through the mattress.

On the firm side of the Layla, there is only 1″ of copper-infused memory foam in the comfort layer and no convoluted support foam.

Support Layers

Between the two sides, there is a layer of base support foam that is thick and quite durable. The Layla is a very supportive mattress, making it a great choice for people with pain – in fact, it’s one of the best mattresses for arthritis.

Layla Mattress Performance

So, we put the Layla mattress to the test and measured its motion transfer, cooling, and other features. Read on to see how the Layla did on our tests!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Layla is an all-foam mattress so, no matter what, it is going to sleep hotter than most innerspring and hybrid mattresses. That being said, the Layla should sleep cooler than most memory foam mattresses because of its copper infusion and Thermogel cover – copper and Thermogel should draw heat away from sleepers’ bodies and keep the top of the mattress quite cool.

Motion Transfer

When it comes to motion transfer, few materials handle it as well as memory foam, and because of this, the Layla performed quite well during our motion transfer tests.

When we placed a glass of water on the soft side of the Layla mattress, we could press into the surrounding area without disturbing the water too much. We did see some more disturbance when we did this test on the firm side, but not too much.

Layla Mattress - Motion Transfer

Also, when our reviewer, Marten, lay down on the mattress, our video director could move around on the other side without disturbing Marten. Keeping these results in mind, the Layla should be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support

Given that the Layla is an all-foam mattress, it does not feature excellent edge support. Sitting down on the edge of the soft side, the mattress collapses quite a bit. Sitting on the firm side, it does not collapse so much, but we still don’t feel very secure in this position.

Lying down on both sides of the Layla mattress, we don’t feel like we can approach the edge without rolling off the mattress.

Durability

The Layla mattress contains high-quality foam layers – considering its construction, the Layla mattress should last between 7 and 10 years.

Off-gassing

When we originally took the Layla mattress out of its box, there was some initial mattress off-gassing. However, we left the mattress in a ventilated room for 48 hours, and the smell completely went away.

Noise

Moving around the Layla, the mattress makes almost no noise. This is usually a bigger issue with hybrid and innerspring mattresses, but we don’t usually have this problem with all-foam mattresses like the Layla.

Sex

Those who need a mattress for sex usually want to find a responsive, bouncy mattress; they want something that makes it easy to move around and reposition. Because the Layla contains soft memory foam that is not too responsive, it might not be the best mattress for sex.

Layla Mattress Complaints

Although the Layla mattress has cooling copper infusion layers, it may still be too warm for people who naturally sleep very hot because of the memory foam construction. If you sleep hot, you may want to check out our list of best cooling mattresses instead.

How Does the Layla Compare to Other Mattresses?

For those who want to do some good comparison shopping, we’d like to compare the Layla mattress to some other related mattresses. To see how Layla stacks up against even more competitors, make sure to also check out all of our mattress comparisons to find popular comparisons like Layla vs Nectar and Layla vs Saatva.

Layla vs Layla Hybrid

The main difference between the Layla and Layla Hybrid can be found in the support layer – the Layla features base foam, and the Layla Hybrid features support coils. Even with this construction difference, the mattresses are close in terms of firmness and feel. They both have a soft side, a firm side, and a slow-moving feel overall.

Layla Hybrid Construction And Layers

The Layla Hybrid does have some advantages over the Layla mattress because, with coils in its support layer, the Hybrid is more breathable, supportive, and durable than the Layla mattress. However, these improvements do give the Layla Hybrid a higher price.

Light and medium-weight sleepers and those who don’t struggle with sleeping hot can save some money by choosing the Layla mattress. Larger people, hot sleepers, and those who want a longer-lasting investment might want to consider the Layla Hybrid mattress.

Layla vs Casper

The Layla and Casper are both all-foam mattresses, but they are different in a number of ways. The Layla is flippable, while the Casper is not, and the Casper features a zoned construction, while the Layla does not.

In terms of firmness, the soft side of the Layla is softer than the Casper, and the firm side is firmer than the Casper. Finally, the Layla has more of a classic memory foam feel, and the Casper has a more balanced foam feel.

Casper Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

Because of these differences, the Layla and Casper are better for different types of sleepers. The Layla should be a better option for side sleepers and those who like to sink into their mattress. The Casper should work for combination sleepers and those who like to sleep more on top of their mattress.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress FAQs

Now, we would like to answer some frequently asked questions about the Layla mattress.

Is Layla a good mattress?

In our experience, the Layla is a fantastic mattress, but it does depend on what shoppers are looking for. If they want something that provides that slow-moving memory foam feel and has two firmnesses in one, the Layla will be a great choice. If they are a larger stomach sleeper and don't prefer the memory foam feel, the Layla might not be the best choice.

How long does it take a Layla mattress to expand?

The Layla is a bed in a box mattress, and it will take between 24 and 48 hours for it to fully expand.

Does the Layla mattress sleep hot?

The Layla is a memory foam mattress, so it is going to trap some heat. That being said, the memory foam features a copper infusion and the cover contains a cooling Thermogel - these materials should keep the mattress from sleeping extremely hot.

Does the Layla mattress need a box spring?

So, do you need a box spring with the Layla? The Layla mattress does not require a box spring and can be placed on any solid frame of foundation. However, if the bed requires a box spring, the Layla mattress will work perfectly fine with it.
