Pros
A durable, long-lasting bed
Great cooling features to help dissipate heat
A cheap mattress
Cons
The Titan Plus is more supportive
Not great contouring

Our Expert’s Take

The Titan Plus Luxe is a durable and extra-supportive mattress designed for heavy people. This medium-firm mattress has an 8” support layer of extra-strong TitanCaliber coils and a high-density foam base. The cover and comfort layers consist of foam that provides optimal contouring and comfort. What does all of that mean? Well, the coils and high-density foam base contribute to the sturdy, medium-firm feel of the mattress, and—at least in my case—provided the supportiveness I need to feel comfortable. As far as the comfort layers go, they keep things from feeling too sturdy, as they enabled me to sink into the mattress surface just enough.

What the testers say: ‘‘When I tested out the Titan Plus Luxe, I found it had fantastic pressure relief for side sleeping. In addition, I could feel the cooling features doing their job. I usually overheat at night, but that wasn’t an issue on the Titan Plus Luxe.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Titan Plus Luxe

  • The Titan Plus Luxe scored a 4 out of 5 or above on all of our mattress tests. These include such factors as cooling, edge support, motion transfer, and durability. It’s rare for us to test a mattress that doesn’t score below-average on a single assessment.
  • TitanFlex Foam and TitanCaliber Coils both contribute to a cushioning but responsive mattress surface. So, you should feel nice and cozy but also won’t have a lot of trouble moving around on the mattress or switching sleeping positions.
  • Despite the quality construction and materials, the Titan Plus Luxe is actually quite affordable, relative to other mattresses of its caliber.

What to Keep in Mind About the Titan Plus Luxe

  • As is the case for many mattresses that accommodate heavyweight sleepers, lightweight sleepers will likely find the Titan Plus Luxe too firm. This could be a problem for couples with different body types. In cases like these we recommend a split-firmness mattress like the Saatva Solaire, so you can both be comfortable.
  • If you’re a fan of the unique, slow-moving feel of memory foam then the Titan Plus Luxe might not be your best option. Because it is so supportive, it doesn’t allow for the same level of sinkage that you might find in a typical all-foam bed.

Other user reviews

On the Titan website, the Titan Plus Luxe has an average score of 4.6 out of 5 based on 1,483 customer reviews. Praise is given to the blend of comfort and support, particularly for heavy individuals. However, some unhappy customers complain that the mattress exacerbated their aches and pains.

Innerspring mattresses offer better support

Our Expert’s Take

Innerspring mattresses tend to be a good match for heavy people because of their support. But what if you prefer a classic memory Innerspring mattresses tend to be a good match for heavy people because of their support. But what if you prefer a classic memory foam feel? If so, you might want to check out the Nectar Premier, an all-foam bed with a thick layer of memory foam right on top. As I rested on it, I slowly sank into the mattress and felt it conform to my body, especially the shoulders and hips. But, there was also enough support here to keep me from bottoming out.

What the testers say: ‘‘When I slept on the Nectar Premier mattress, I was surprised by how supportive it was. Even though it is an all-foam memory foam mattress, it still offers good support for someone of my weight.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Nectar Premier

  • An all-foam mattress isn’t usually our first thought when thinking about good fits for heavyweight sleepers. Yet, the high-density foam in the Nectar Premier helps provide enough support for heavy back and side sleepers between 230 and 275 pounds.
  • Cooling is another feature often absent from all-foam mattresses, but the Nectar Premier’s gel infusions and phase change material kept us comfortably cool as we tested.
  • If taken care of and rotated regularly, the Nectar Premier can last for up to ten years because of its solid durability.

What to Keep in Mind About the Nectar Premier

  • Despite its high marks, all-foam mattresses are not for everyone. In fact, our testing determined that the Nectar Premier doesn’t provide the support that heavyweight stomach sleepers need—it’s simply not firm enough. Instead, we would recommend the Plank Firm in this instance.

Other user reviews

Based on 45,490 user reviews from the Nectar website, the Nectar Premier has an average rating of 4.7 out of 5. Many heavyweight customers rave about the bed’s ability to support them and respond to their specific body types. On the other hand, some say that it does not hold up well over time, and eventually becomes saggy and/or lumpy.

Pros
Shouldn’t trap too much heat
Boasts a comfortable memory foam feel
Great for heavier back sleepers
Cons
Doesn’t isolate motion very well
Not the best pressure relief

Our Expert’s Take

Helix prioritizes customization and flexibility. They designed the Helix Plus with heavy sleepers in mind. This hybrid mattress has lots of reinforcement, from an additional layer of high-grade polyfoam to taller-than-average coils offering extra support. The firm construction kept me from sinking into the mattress while still providing contouring and pressure relief.

What the testers say: ‘‘When I tried out the Helix Plus, I was impressed by just how supportive it was. I usually have trouble getting enough support while stomach sleeping, but the Helix Plus was firm enough to offer the support I needed.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Helix Plus

  • Three words: support, support, support. The Helix Plus earned a perfect score on our support test, where we assess how well a mattress accommodates large amounts of weight.
  • The Helix Plus provides a bit of that hugging, memory foam feeling, but not so much that it’s hard to move around on. Combination sleepers should appreciate the level of responsiveness.
  • This mattress has a nice, sturdy perimeter. So, when you put a lot of weight on the edge of the bed you should feel supported and secure.

What to Keep in Mind About the Helix Plus

  • We weren’t too impressed with motion transfer on the Helix Plus. This means that as your partner tosses, turns, or gets out of bed for a glass of water, there’s a chance you’ll feel their movements on your side of the bed.
  • If you’re a side sleeper, you probably won’t find this mattress very comfortable. That’s because its dense foam layers don’t permit your shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress enough to be properly cushioned. Instead, we suggest you check out the Puffy Lux Hybrid.

Other user reviews

Looking at the Helix website, the Helix Plus has an average rating of 4.4 out of 5, based on 2,479 customer reviews. There are many users who specifically call out the bed’s stellar performance for heavyweight people, saying that it helped reduce soreness. Some, however, state that while the mattress started out good, it’s gotten less responsive and supportive over a short period of time.

Pros
A great value mattress
Responsive and easy to move around on
Boasts great cooling features
Cons
Too firm for side sleeping
Not the best contouring

Our Expert’s Take

Heavier folks need a stronger foundation than other body types, and this becomes all the more important with another person on the mattress. Luckily, the Emma CliMax Hybrid offers the support these folks need. In fact, this bed was made with heavy couples in mind (are you noticing a trend on this list?). The inclusion of high-density foam, a strong edge support system, and sturdy pocketed coils keeps these folks from bottoming out on the mattress, and provide some nice motion isolation to keep disturbances to a minimum throughout the night.

What the testers say: ‘‘During my tests, I saw only a bit of motion transfer on the Emma CliMax. Also, I felt almost no motion on my side of the mattress when my fellow tester moved around on the other side.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Emma CliMax Hybrid

  • The Emma CliMax Hybrid does a good job of isolating motion, thanks to the dense layers of comfort foam between the surface and the coils. This is a very important factor for couples, especially those who are easily disturbed.
  • The zoned layer of pocketed springs do a great job of providing support to the areas of your body that most need it, especially when you’re on your back or your stomach.
  • The bounciness of the Emma CliMax Hybrid makes it quite easy to toss, turn, and change sleeping positions on.

What to Keep in Mind About the Emma CliMax Hybrid

  • If you sleep on your side, you’re unlikely to find this mattress comfortable. It simply doesn’t provide the cushioning needed to keep your sensitive pressure points ache-free.
  • As we mentioned before, if you and your partner have different body types then a mattress this firm is likely to leave one of you uncomfortable. Instead, opt for a split firmness mattress that will accommodate both of you. We suggest the Saatva Solaire.

Other user reviews

Looking at the Emma website, the CliMax Hybrid has an average rating of 4.7 out of 5, based on 260 customer reviews. Couples appreciate that the mattress does a good job of supporting the both of them while also isolating motion. Most of the negative reviews highlight bad customer service, with some stating that the mattress took weeks to ship.

Pros
The WinkBeds Plus sleeps cool
Great for heavier back sleepers
Cons
Might be too firm for some
Not the best pressure relief for side sleeping

Our Expert’s Take

Like the Helix Plus, the WinkBed Plus is made specifically for larger people. Personally, I found plenty of support in 7.5″ of zoned, individually wrapped coils and zoned latex layer, especially on my back and stomach. Both of these layers are firmer in the center, giving extra support right under the lumbar zone. This makes the mattress a great match for anyone contending with back pain.

What the testers say: ‘‘Sleeping on the WinkBeds Plus, I was impressed by the amount of lumbar support I received. The center area of the mattress is firmer, so I felt more support there. I could see this helping with back pain.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the WinkBed Plus

  • Thanks to extra-durable coils and high-density foams, the WinkBed Plus is very durable and should maintain its structural integrity for upwards of ten years if properly cared for.
  • Because the WinkBed Plus has a responsive, bouncy feel it makes for a great mattress for sex, as moving around on it doesn’t take much effort.
  • This mattress is right in the firmness sweet spot for heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. Both should find it supportive and comfortable.

What to Keep in Mind About the WinkBed Plus

  • Side sleepers, even heavyweight ones, will likely find the WinkBed Plus too firm to relieve pressure around their hips and shoulders.
  • While this mattress can often be bought on sale, budget shoppers might find its base price of $1,999 for a queen to be a bit steep.

Other user reviews

Based on 8,414 reviews from the WinkBed website, the WinkBed Plus has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5. Many call out the perfect, Goldilocks blend of firm but still a bit soft. Others were less enthusiastic, stating that they expected the mattress to help with their back pain but it did not.

Pros
Good pressure relief for side sleepers
A nice luxury mattress
Cons
Has a higher price tag
Stomach sleepers will need more support

Our Expert’s Take

Something that sleepers of all sizes deal with is sleeping hot. If you are a larger person, this can be a bigger issue as you sink further into your mattress and trap more heat around your body. This shouldn’t be a problem with the Nolah Evolution Hybrid, one of the coolest-sleeping mattresses out there. It is supportive enough to handle heavier weights and features a cooling cover, cooling foams, and airflow-promoting coils. I know, I know—advanced cooling technology can often sound like a gimmick, but in the case of the Nolah Evolution Hybrid I can say firsthand that these things work.

What the testers say: ‘‘The Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress is one of the coolest mattresses I have come across. While trying it out, the mattress actually felt cool to the touch. Lying down, I felt it keeping me cool.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Nolah Evolution Hybrid

  • Not only do the layer of coils and breathable gusset keep the Nolah Evolution Hybrid from trapping much heat, but the ArcticTex cover actually feels cool to the touch. This one is a real winner for anyone who sleeps uncomfortably hot at night.
  • This mattress is available in three firmness options, so really anyone should be able to find comfort and support on it. That said, for heavyweight sleepers we suggest Luxury Firm for back sleepers and side sleepers, and Firm for stomach sleepers.
  • High-quality materials and construction make the Nolah Evolution Hybrid incredibly durable, so you can expect it to last you a nice, long time if properly cared for.

What to Keep in Mind About the Nolah Evolution Hybrid

  • The edges of the Nolah Evolution Mattress dip quite a bit when pressure is applied. So, if you tend to sleep close to the side you might not feel as supported as you’d like.
  • The base price for a queen is $2,499, which will likely be too pricey for many. Keep in mind, though, that Nolah often runs generous sales.

Other user reviews

On the Nolah website the Nolah Evolution Hybrid has an average score of 4.9 out of 5 based on 810 customer reviews. Many praise the Nolah Evolution Hybrid for finally providing them a good night’s sleep after years of discomfort. However, a small few have more negative sentiments, with the mattress specifically being called out as bad for side sleeping.

The Bear Elite Hybrid has three different firmness options, and for those over 230 lb, we suggest the Medium or Firm versions. While The Bear Elite Hybrid has three different firmness options, but for those over 230 lb we suggest the Medium or Firm versions. While this still may be too soft to support heavy stomach sleepers (I was quite uncomfortable on my stomach), other heavyweight sleepers should enjoy the bed’s layer of copper-gel memory foam and its sturdy coil system. These materials create a blend of comfort and support that should be an especially great option for heavy back sleepers. Plus, for you hot sleepers out there the Bear Elite Hybrid’s copper-infused foam feels especially breathable and doesn’t seem to trap heat easily.

What the testers say: ‘‘Most heavyweight folks should feel comfy and supported while back sleeping on the Bear Elite Hybrid. The center of the mattress feels firm, which helped keep my hips elevated and in the correct alignment. Heavier side sleepers should also feel a great deal of cushioning along the shoulders and hips.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Bear Elite Hybrid

  • The Bear Elite Hybrid makes it easy to switch sleeping positions thanks to its pocketed spring coils, which give it a nice bounciness.
  • It’s available in three different firmnesses. For heavyweight side and back sleepers we suggest Luxury Firm, and for heavyweight stomach sleepers we suggest Extra Firm.
  • The coil layer in the Bear Elite Hybrid allows air to easily pass through the mattress, making it breathable and cooling.

What to Keep in Mind About the Bear Elite Hybrid

  • The Bear Elite Hybrid doesn’t provide the slow-moving feel that many people enjoy. If you want to feel like you’re gradually sinking into your bed, we suggest considering a memory foam mattress.

Other user reviews

According to the Bear website, the Bear Elite Hybrid has 4.4 out of 5 stars based on 264 customer reviews. There is a ton of positive feedback, with many users calling out that if you’re a heavyweight person it’s important to go with the firmest option. As for the negative, some users complain about structural defects in the mattress, in that it expands awkwardly when unboxed.

Flippable for two firmnesses

Cons

Our Expert’s Take

For stomach sleepers, it’s important to have a mattress firm enough to support the hips, chest, and shoulders while sleeping but soft enough to help properly align the spine, and the Plank mattress may be the firmest mattress around. The mattress is flippable, and we rank the firmest side as a 9/10 on our firmness scale, and the less firm side comes in at an 8/10, which is still very firm. Those worried that the Plank will feel too firm, believe me, so was I. So, I was surprised to find that, despite it not having the softness typically associated with a good mattress, it actually feels very nice to lie on (just as long as you’re not a side sleeper).

What the testers say: ‘‘There are firm mattresses, and then there’s the Plank. I was surprised by just how firm it was! It was great for stomach sleeping, even though I am a heavier guy.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Plank Firm

  • We love a flippable mattress. The Plank Firm has a firm side (8 out of 10 firmness) and an extra-firm side (9 out of 10 firmness). The firm side is great for back sleeping while the extra-firm side accommodates stomach sleepers well.
  • Mattresses marketed as extra-firm often turn out to be softer than we’re led to believe. With the Plank Firm, though, that is not the case. This mattress lives up to its name and delivers the firmness that heavyweight back and stomach sleepers need to keep their hips supported.

What to Keep in Mind About the Plank Firm

  • The Plank Firm isn’t all that cooling. Its all-foam construction absorbs and traps body heat, which isn’t ideal for sleepers prone to night sweats.
  • This mattress is simply too firm for side sleepers. It doesn’t allow hips and shoulders to sink in nearly enough to get the pressure relief needed.

Other user reviews

Based on 2,659 customer reviews on the Plank website, this mattress has an average score of 4.8 out of 5. Plenty of users appreciate the back-pain relief that the Plank Firm has provided them, while some have issues with the firmness—some claiming it’s too firm, others claiming it’s not firm enough.

Pros
A great cooling mattress
Contains eco-friendly materials
Cons
The Saatva HD is pricey
Lacks a slow-moving feel

Our Expert’s Take

Made specifically for larger people, the Saatva HD is the tallest mattress on this list at 15.5″. You can also add a supportive foundation of up to 8.75″ for extra height. Inside the bed, there are a ton of luxurious features typically found in high-end hotel mattresses: comfort foam, high-grade steel coils, Talalay latex, memory foam, and support foam, all of which work to give heavier side sleepers the enhanced support and durability they need.

What the testers say: ‘‘While I only weigh 270 lb, I still felt decent pressure relief while side sleeping on the Saatva HD. Those who weigh more than me should feel even better pressure relief than I did.’’ – Marten, Lead Reviewer

What We Love About the Saatva HD

  • The lumbar support provided by the Saatva HD can help mitigate or prevent back pain in heavyweight sleepers, as it promotes proper spine alignment  regardless of your sleeping position.
  • The edge support on this mattress is outstanding. You can place your full weight along the perimeter of the mattress and feel completely confident that it won’t sag underneath you.
  • The Saatva HD comes with a generous lifetime warranty.

What to Keep in Mind About the Saatva HD

  • We’ve mentioned expensive mattresses on this list, but the Saatva HD is really expensive. Unless you’re willing to spend around $3,000 on a queen-size mattress then this probably isn’t the one for you.
  • Motion isolation isn’t great on the Saatva HD. You’ll likely feel your partner’s movements, which can be an issue for light sleepers.

Other user reviews

According to the Saatva website, the Saatva HD has an average rating of 4.9 out of 5, based on 118 customer reviews. There are many reviews stating that the mattress provides the support that heavyweight people need. Impressively, the Saatva HD doesn’t have any one- or two-star reviews.

Our Expert’s Take

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is crafted from memory foam and springs. This mattress is medium-firm, landing it a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. Although the mattress has springs, the foam layer gives it a soft feel and provides good body contouring for back sleepers. This is a great option for couples, heavier back sleepers, and even side sleepers because of its pressure relieving properties. However, if you like to sleep towards the edge of the bed we’d caution you that the perimeter of the Puffy Lux Hybrid will likely be pretty saggy under your weight.

What the testers say: ‘‘I experienced a great balance of comfort and support while back sleeping. My hips sank in the right amount and the coils gave me the right amount of support.’’ – Elisa, Reviewer

What We Love About the Puffy Lux Hybrid

  • The Puffy Lux Hybrid’s layers of Cooling Cloud Foam and Climate Comfort Foam help dissipate heat and wick away humidity, while the support layer of coils adds some nice breathability to the construction. All of that means this mattress does a good job of staying cool at night.
  • With a firmness of 6.5 out of 10, this mattress works well for both heavyweight back and side sleepers. Back sleepers should find that their hips sink into the surface just enough for their spine to remain aligned, while side sleepers’ hips and shoulders will feel some nice pressure relief from the Dual Cloud Foam comfort layer.

What to Keep in Mind About the Puffy Lux Hybrid

  • While great for heavyweight back and side sleepers, the Puffy Lux Hybrid is likely too soft for heavyweight stomach sleepers. Opt for something firmer that will keep your hips elevated, like the Plank Firm.
  • We weren’t impressed with the durability of the Puffy Lux Hybrid. You may notice it begin to sag after some years, especially if not properly cared for.

Other user reviews

Looking at the reviews published on the Puffy website, the Lux Hybrid has an average score of 5 out of 5 based on over 12,000 reviews. Clearly, customers have a lot of good things to say about Puffy, from the customer service down to every aspect of the mattress.

What Heavy People Should Consider When Looking For A Mattress

For those larger people out there, there are a few extra factors to take into consideration when choosing a new mattress. Keep the information below in mind, and it should be quite easy to find the right mattress!

Durability

Mattress Durability

No matter what your size is, it’s important to consider a mattress’s durability. Knowing how long your bed will last helps you understand if the price tag matches the value. For heavier people, durability is especially crucial, as their extra weight can strain the mattress and decrease its lifespan.

To ensure a mattress lasts, look for models incorporating high-density foams and extra coils. These components can counteract the wear and tear heavier weights can put on a mattress.

They can also solve the problem of sagging. As we lie on a mattress over time, body indentations can form, and this happens even more quickly under heavier weights. The indentations can cause discomfort and decrease the life of a mattress so, to combat this issue, look for mattresses that have “sag-proof” foams that retain their form over time.

In addition, make sure to read the mattress warranty fine print closely. You want to know exactly what’s covered if your mattress isn’t quite as durable as you thought. And of course, seek out the best place to buy a mattress. This means looking online and using our exclusive coupons.

Finally, learn about how often you should replace your mattress.

RELATED: Best Mattress That Won’t Sag

Support

mattress support layers

Mattresses designed for larger people will utilize high-density foams and taller coils to give extra support, so it’s an excellent idea to choose a mattress with those features. High-density foams will not compress as easily, meaning there’s less of a chance that heavier sleepers will “bottom out” on the mattress and engage the firmer support layers. Taller and higher-grade coils are also designed to support more weight.

Larger people may struggle with issues such as lower back pain and sciatica, especially if their mattress is not supportive enough. Make sure to read our top picks for the best mattress for lower back pain and sciatica.

You may also want to ask yourself, “Do you need a box spring?” We recommend you check out the mattress website to make sure you’re getting the right support system.

Thickness

Another important factor to consider is the overall height of the mattress. If a mattress is taller, it could offer more support, but if the mattress is thin, heavier people could press right through it to the bottom of the bed.

In addition to looking for a thicker mattress overall, it’s also helpful to consider the thickness of a mattress’ comfort layer. If there’s a very thin comfort layer, heavier people may have the issue of “bottoming out” on the mattress as they press through the comfort layer and engage the support layers. The thicker the comfort layer, the less likely it is that sleepers experience this problem.

Edge Support

mattress edge support

The term “edge support” refers to how well a mattress holds sleepers up when they’re sitting or lying near its edge. Does it collapse completely or give them the necessary support? Edge support also determines how close to the edge of a mattress someone can lie comfortably before they start to feel like they’re going to roll off the edge.

For larger people, this is an important feature. If someone is taller, heavier, and/or sleeps with a partner, they want to utilize as much of the mattress’ surface area as possible. Also, heavier people can compress a mattress more than a lighter person might, so they want to know if they can sit and lie down comfortably near the edge of the mattress.

As a general rule, hybrids and innerspring mattresses usually have better edge support than memory foam mattresses. That being said, both hybrids and all-foam mattresses sometimes have reinforced edges and foam encasements to enhance their edge support. It’s a good idea to ask the mattress retailer or manufacturer about construction specifically as it relates to edge support.

RELATED: Best Mattresses for Couples

Mattress Firmness And Sleeping Position

Heavy people should pay close attention to the difference between a firm vs soft mattress. While heavier sleepers may think that a very firm mattress is the best, it’s not that simple. It is true that a firmer mattress should offer more support, but it’s worth thinking about one’s specific sleeping position and whether the mattress’ firmness will be a good fit for one’s preferences.

  • Mattresses for heavy people are usually firmer than average, but back sleepers won’t want their mattress to be too firm. There needs to be just enough give so that their hips sink in and keep their spine in alignment.
  • Heavier-weight side sleepers usually want some nice pressure relief on their shoulders and hips. That means they’ll need a little bit of softness, although an overly soft mattress is going to cause them to bottom out. They should consider their weight and the thickness of the comfort layer to find the proper balance.
  • Heavier-weight stomach sleepers should have the easiest time finding a mattress. As long as the bed is firm enough, they should get the support they need.
  • Heavier-weight combination sleepers want to find that right balance of comfort and support. Consider firmness, the thickness of the comfort layer, and your own weight while looking at different options.

RELATED: Sleeping Positions Guide

Sleeping Partners And Their Sleeping Preferences

sleeping partners and their sleep preferences

If someone is looking for a mattress for their partner and them, they need to factor their weight and sleeping position into the equation.

If someone’s partner is close to their weight and sleeps in the same position as them, the decision could be easy. But if they’re a different weight and need a softer or firmer mattress, the decision will be more difficult. Both partners may need to find a middle ground where they each compromise a bit on the comfort and support they need.

Couples should also consider their total weight, as it could mean extra pressure on the mattress and increase wear and tear. Mattresses such as the Big Fig are made to hold up to 1,000 lb, and there are also foundations designed to add more support for a mattress. In addition, make sure the mattress is large enough for both of you. Take a look at our best king-size mattresses for some good options for heavy couples.

RELATED: Best Mattresses for Couples

Mattress Cooling

mattress cooling features

When we are thinking about the temperature of a mattress, the mattress construction will play a big part. Innerspring or hybrid mattresses will most likely sleep cooler than a memory foam mattress since coils allow for airflow, while memory foam can trap heat.

That being said, many mattress-makers perforate their foam layers and make channels in the foam to promote airflow. Some of them also infuse gel into the foams or use an open-celled design to allow for good breathability. It’s important to ask about the mattress’ materials if you’re concerned about sleeping hot.

Weight is another consideration. For instance, if the mattress contains memory foam, a heavier person may sink further into it than a lighter person, thus exposing less of their body to the cooling air.

As a result, larger sleepers who worry about sleeping hot may want to think about finding a firmer mattress. If they’re able to sleep more “on” the mattress, they should stay cooler while they sleep.

What Mattress Type Is Best For Heavy People?

If you are a larger person, what type of mattress is going to be best for you? In general, it is all about support. Some mattresses just aren’t up to the challenge of supporting heavier bodies.

That shouldn’t be an issue with most innerspring mattresses. Innerspring mattresses feature coils in their support layer and are often more supportive than all-foam mattresses. Just research the innerspring mattress you are interested in, and make sure that it contains high-grade coils that are rated for heavier weights.

In addition, hybrid mattresses are usually great for heavier people. Like innerspring mattresses, they contain coils. They also feature memory foam, latex foam, or polyfoam in their comfort layer. This makes them a good match for heavier people who still want a foam feel with their mattress.

Mattress Accessories for Heavy People

Looking for some accessories to go with your new or current mattress? There are some great options for heavy people out there. For instance, if you’re not ready to purchase a new mattress but would like to add a new feel to your bed, a mattress topper may be the way to go. Heavier people should find something with high-density foam or latex foam. These materials will offer comfort without losing their shape too quickly. See our best mattress toppers for heavy people for some more options.

In addition, make sure to pair your mattress with the proper base. This will ensure your mattress is able to give you the support you need and will fight sagging. Also, you may consider an adjustable base. This can help with pain issues and even curb snoring or sleep apnea.

Best Mattress for Heavy People FAQs

What is the best mattress for a heavy person?

If we had to choose just one best mattress for heavy people, I would choose the Titan Plus Luxe. It offers great support, pressure relief, and cooling for heavier people. And, you can’t beat the price.

That said, it’s worth doing some more research and finding a mattress that suits your specific needs. Take a look at all of the options on this list. What’s good for someone else might not accommodate you.

Do mattresses have a weight capacity?

Yes, they do! While some companies don’t explicitly advertise it, all mattresses have their own weight capacities. It is very important for larger people to research the weight capacity of the mattresses they’re considering. And don’t forget to factor in the weight of your partner, if you sleep with one.

What should a heavy person think about when buying a mattress?

First and foremost, larger people should find a mattress that is going to support their weight. In addition, they should find something with durable materials that is resistant to sagging. Most likely, you’re going to need a very firm mattress, especially if you’re a heavyweight back or stomach sleeper. It will keep your hips from sinking so far below that mattress surface that your spine rests in an unhealthy position.

What mattress firmness is better for heavier people?

In general, heavier people should choose a firmer, more supportive mattress. However, if you are a side sleeper, make sure the mattress has enough softness to relieve pressure on your shoulders and hips. Remember, if you find the mattress you purchased is too firm you can return it within the trial-period window. Or, you could purchase a mattress topper to modify the firmness level.
