As a company, Helix Sleep is all about providing you with options and flexibility; they offer six main models in their mattress line, plus more beds in their Luxe line. They range in terms of firmness and feel and give customers many chances to find the right fit for them!

The Helix Midnight is the brand’s most popular mattress and is right in the middle in terms of its firmness and feel. This makes it a good middle-of-the-road match for many different types of sleepers:

Who Might Like The Helix Midnight Mattress?

  • Back sleepers who require a good balance of comfort and support
  • Hot sleepers who want to sleep cooler at night
  • Fans of a mattress with a balanced foam feel
  • Those who need one of the best orthopedic mattresses

Who Might Not Like The Helix Midnight Mattress?

  • Stomach sleepers who need more support
  • Heavier side sleepers
  • Fans of a mattress with a slow-moving memory foam feel

Where the Helix Midnight Mattress Ranks

Helix Midnight Mattress Firmness And Feel

One of the great things about Helix is that they offer mattresses with a wide range of firmnesses and feels! Keep reading to see where the Helix Midnight falls and if it will be a good fit for your preferred sleeping position. Also, see it how it stacks up to other brands with our Helix mattress comparisons.

How Firm Is The Helix Midnight?

In our experience, the Helix Midnight has a firmness of 7/10, just firmer-than-average. The top layers of memory foam and polyfoam provide the top of the mattress with some plushness, and the coils provide some more support and firmness; combined, these layers give the Helix Midnight mattress that slightly firmer-than-average feel.

Sleeping On The Helix Midnight

We hopped onto the Helix Midnight mattress and switched between all three sleeping positions. Starting off back sleeping, we thought the Helix Midnight was a fantastic match – the top layer of Memory Plus Foam conformed to our bodies and let us sink a bit while the individually-wrapped coils held up our bodies. If you want another great option for back sleeping, see our Helix Dusk mattress review.

Side sleeping, the Helix Midnight mattress was not a bad match for us; that being said, we did feel a bit of pressure and bunching up around our shoulders and hips. If you sleep primarily on your side, you might want to take a look at one of Helix’s softer mattress models, such as the Helix Sunset.

Stomach sleeping, the Helix Midnight mattress was too soft for us, and we could feel our hips dipping down into the mattress. Stomach sleepers usually want to choose a mattress on the firmer side to prevent this from happening (as it could cause lower back pain).

What Does The Helix Midnight Mattress Feel Like?

The Helix Midnight mattress has a balanced foam feel with a good bit of response. The Memory Plus Foam on top does give the mattress a touch of that slow-moving feel but, overall, it is bouncier and makes it easy to move around.

Average-Weight Sleepers: 130 lb—230 lb

Average-weight back sleepers should experience a fantastic balance of comfort and support when they are lying on the Helix Midnight mattress. They should feel their hips sink in just the right amount, while the top foam layer conforms to the curves of their bodies.

Side sleeping, average-weight people who are closer to 130 lb should feel excellent pressure relief around their shoulders and hips. However, if you are closer to 230 lb, you might press through the top comfort layers and feel some more bunching up around the shoulders and hips.

Average-weight stomach sleepers who don’t weigh much more than 130 lb could get enough support from the Helix Midnight mattress. Those who are closer to 230 lb should look for some firmer if they want the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers: Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back sleepers who don’t weigh much more than 230 lb should get the balance of comfort they require. However, if they are over 300 lb, they should look at the Helix PLUS mattress, Helix’s model made specifically for larger people.

Side sleeping, larger people will either want to consider one of the softer Helix mattresses or a mattress made just for larger people; they will undoubtedly press into the mattress and feel some significant pressure on their shoulders and hips.

Stomach sleeping, heavy people will be better with a firmer mattress as the Midnight might let their hips dip into the mattress (again, this could cause back pain and other discomforts).

Lightweight Sleepers: Under 130 lb

Lightweight people should feel comfortable and supported in all three positions when they are on the Helix Midnight mattress.

Helix Midnight Mattress Construction

Let’s pop the hood on the Helix Midnight mattress and see exactly how it works – we’ll look at each layer and explain how this will affect the overall performance of the mattress.

Layer Description
Cover Soft Touch cover that is breathable and cool to the touch
Comfort Layer #1 Pressure-reliving Memory Plus Foam that has a slow-moving memory foam feel
Comfort Layer #2 Polyfoam that adds some bounce to the mattress
Support Layer Individually-wrapped coils that provide support and airflow
Base Layer High-density polyfoam that provides additional base support

Cover

The Helix Midnight features a Soft Touch cover that is designed to be breathable and allows air to flow through the top of the mattress. In addition, the cover is soft, cool to the touch, and gives the top of the mattress a comfy, inviting feel.

Comfort Layers

On top of the Helix Midnight, there is a layer of the brand’s proprietary Memory Plus Foam – as we discussed above, this material exhibits that slow-moving feel many expect from memory foam. It will also help with pain relief, making this one of the best mattresses for fibromyalgia and one of the best mattresses for arthritis.

Helix Midnight mattress without the cover

Below that, there is a thinner layer of responsive polyfoam – this acts as a transition layer and also adds some bounce to the top of the mattress.

Support Layer

The Helix Midnight contains individually wrapped coils in its support layer. They add, well, support, and help promote airflow through the mattress. They also rest on a thin layer of high-density polyfoam.

Mattress Height

The Helix Midnight mattress is 12″ thick which is average-size for a hybrid.

Helix Midnight Mattress Performance

There are many other things you should consider when shopping for a new mattress. For instance, will the mattress make you overheat at night, and how does it handle motion transfer? Well, we are here to answer all of those questions and many others!

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

The Helix Midnight should be a cooler-sleeping mattress because of its breathable cover and hybrid mattress design. The coils will allow for a good deal of airflow, and the top layers should not trap a significant amount of heat.

Motion Transfer

The Helix Midnight mattress handles motion transfer quite well for a hybrid mattress. With its layer of Memory Plus Foam on top, it prevents too much motion from transferring between each side of the mattress; if you need a mattress for couples, the Helix Midnight could be a good option.

Edge Support

The Helix Midnight also boasts some impressive edge support, and we feel secure sitting and lying down near the edge of the mattress. Again, couples take note: each partner should be able to sleep toward the edge without rolling off.

Durability

Looking at its materials and overall construction, the Helix Midnight does appear to be a durable mattress. It really depends on your size and how often you use the mattress, but we expect it to last for between seven and 10 years.

Off-gassing

The Helix Midnight is a bed in a box mattress and, after unboxing, there was definitely some off-gassing. This slight chemical smell is to be expected from a foam hybrid like the Midnight, and the smell did dissipate after 48 hours.

Noise

Moving around on the Helix Midnight, we did notice some slight creaking and squeaking from the coils. It was not very loud, and we did not wake up in the middle of the night because of these sounds.

Sex

The Helix Midnight could be a good mattress for sex as it is bouncy and responsive – this should make it easier for partners to move around and change positions.

Common Helix Mattress Complaints

It’s normal to see complaints or negative reviews for a mattress, so we wanted to address some of the common complaints we see about the Helix mattress to hopefully set your mind at ease. One of the most common complaints we see recently relates to customer service and delivery. Due to COVID-19, shipping times are taking longer than usual and the customer service team has been experiencing a higher number of inbound questions causing delays in response times, though we do see many customer complaints being resolved.

Another complaint we see customer have about the Helix mattress relates to the firmness of the mattress. Some customers complain about their Helix mattress being either too soft or too firm for their preferences. In these cases, Helix offers to send a mattress topper to adjust the firmness of the mattress to your preference.

How Does The Helix Midnight Compare?

Now we’ll compare the Helix Midnight mattress to another popular mattress that Helix offers.

Helix Midnight Mattress vs Helix Moonlight

Helix offers several different hybrid mattresses, one of which is the Helix Moonlight. When it comes to their construction, the Midnight and Moonlight mattresses are fairly similar. Both include a breathable soft touch cover and a support layer of individually-wrapped coils. The major difference in construction is in the comfort layers.

close up image of the Helix Moonlight mattress without the cover

The comfort layer in the Midnight mattress uses Memory Plus Foam and a thin layer of responsive foam. The comfort layer in the Moonlight mattress instead uses Helix Dynamic Foam, a latex foam alternative. This difference in comfort layer means the Helix Moonlight mattress is softer than the Helix Midnight.

The Helix Moonlight mattress is also designed to be better suited for back and stomach sleepers who need more support for proper spine alignment, whereas the Midnight is designed more with side sleepers in mind to offer pressure point relief.

Both mattresses are currently priced the same.

Who Should Get The Helix Midnight?

  • People who sleep on their side and need pressure relief
