Emma Mattress Firmness and Feel

Now, let’s chat about the super important stuff – firmness and feel.

How Firm is the Emma?

The Emma mattress feels slightly firmer than average, coming in at 7/10 on the Mattress Clarity firmness scale. For reference, the industry standard for medium-firm feels like a 6.5/10. If you need a bit more lumbar support, the Emma foam mattress could be a good choice.

Sleeping On The Emma

The Emma mattress works well for most back sleepers, but it may not be a great choice for lightweight side sleepers. Smaller folks won’t significantly compress the top layers, so they won’t feel as much body contouring and pressure relief. The Emma mattress could work well for lightweight stomach sleepers, but heavier people will likely feel their backs craning out of alignment in this sleeping position.

What Does the Emma Feel Like?

Even though it’s entirely made out of foam, the Emma mattress doesn’t have a traditional “quicksand” sort of quality. Thanks to the proprietary foam layer, this mattress feels both responsive and supportive.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight sleepers should feel comfortable while back and stomach sleeping. Because this mattress feels firmer than others, it may not provide enough pressure relief while side sleeping. If this is your preferred sleeping position, you may need to add a mattress topper.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavier back sleepers should get optimal comfort and support on the Emma mattress. For larger stomach and side sleepers, this bed may not fit the bill. It’s too firm to cushion joints while side sleeping, and it’s not quite supportive enough to support heavier people when they’re resting on their stomachs. If you rest in either of these sleeping positions, you may want to consider getting one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

For lightweight back and stomach sleepers, the Emma mattress is a great pick. However, this bed may not work well for lightweight side sleepers. Its firm feel could lead to some side sleepers developing shoulder and hip pain.

Emma Mattress Construction

Now, let’s see what this bed is all about. Here’s a close look at its construction.

Mattress Height

The Emma mattress is 11” tall.

Cover

This mattress features Emma’s UltraDry Original Cover. Not only does it wick away moisture – the cover is also machine-washable! Simply unzip the top portion and put it in the washing machine.

Comfort Layers

First up, you’ll find Emma’s Cloud Comfort Layer. This proprietary material is infused with graphite, which helps pull heat away from the body. It has a balanced feel that’s both supportive and comfy.

Beneath that sits a layer of ParticleCool Premium Foam. This material allows room for airflow, which is great for hot sleepers. In fact, it’s known to sleep two degrees cooler than traditional memory foam!

The final comfort layer contains Halo Memory Foam, a high-quality material with zoned support. This means it feels firmer in some places and softer in others, which helps sleepers maintain the correct spinal alignment throughout the night. It also helps absorb movement – great news for couples!

Support Layers

The main support layer is made with durable and supportive HRX Supreme Foam. This helps prevent the mattress from sagging over time.

Emma Mattress Performance

Let’s take a moment to examine the Emma mattress’s performance features. We put this bed through a number of tests to determine its cooling abilities, motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

All-foam mattresses tend to trap body heat, but Emma’s proprietary materials help keep sleepers cool at night. The ventilated foams and graphite infusions help dissipate body heat, so if you occasionally wake up feeling stuffy and sweaty, this bed could work for you.

Motion Transfer

Couples, in particular, will want to pay close attention to their mattress’s motion isolation. Nobody wants to wake up whenever their partner shifts sleeping positions during the night!

Fortunately, the Emma mattress performs exceptionally well when it comes to motion transfer. You should hardly feel your side of the bed move if your partner shifts around on the bed.

Edge Support

Couples will also want to consider their bed’s edge support. If a bed sinks or sags near the sides, it could force couples to rest closer toward the center of the mattress.

The Emma mattress doesn’t have the best edge support. You’ll feel the top layers sinking in quite a bit when you sit along the edge. The bed feels a bit more supportive when you lay horizontally along the edge, but if this element is especially important to you, you may want to consider getting one of the best mattresses for couples.

Durability

The Emma mattress has an average height and contains some durable materials, so overall, we expect to have a typical lifespan of 7-10 years.

Off-Gassing

When you open a new bed-in-a-box mattress, you may notice a slight chemical smell. In the mattress industry, we call this “off-gassing,” and it’s quite normal. The Emma mattress took about 48 hours to fully off-gas and expand.

Noise

We didn’t hear any noise when testing the Emma mattress, and because it’s an all-foam bed, we don’t expect it to start to create sound as the years go on.

Sex

‘Usually, couples looking for the best mattresses for sex want beds that feel responsive and springy. If that’s top of mind for you, the Emma mattress won’t fit the bill. Though it won’t make you feel like you’re “sinking” inside the mattress, some people might have difficulty moving around and switching positions on top of it.

Common Emma Mattress Complaints

Most people love their Emma mattress, but some side sleepers have complained that the bed isn’t quite soft enough to relieve pressure along their joints. If you tend to rest in this sleeping position, you may want to consider getting one of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

How Does The Emma Compare To Other Mattresses?

With so many different types of beds on the market, it can be hard to find the best one for your sleep needs. We’ll simplify the process a bit and compare the Emma mattress to two other popular online models: Nectar and Nolah.

Emma vs Nectar

Though they’re both affordable all-foam mattresses, these two beds aren’t identical. The Nectar mattress has more of a slow-moving feel, so if you want a bed with more body contouring, it’s a good option.

The Nectar mattress is also a bit softer than the Emma, making it a better choice for side sleepers. The Emma mattress has a lower price point, however, so it may work better for people on tight budgets.

Who Should Get The Emma Mattress?

  • Stomach sleepers
  • Fans of firmer mattresses
  • Folks who want to save money

Who Should Get The Nectar Mattress?

  • Fans of slow-moving mattresses
  • Side sleepers
  • People who need more pressure relief.

Emma vs Nolah

The most notable difference between these two mattresses lies in the firmness level. The Nolah has a softer feel, making it great for most back and side sleepers. The Emma mattress feels firmer, so it works best for stomach sleepers.

The Nolah has a balanced foam feel, while the Emma feels more responsive. If you want your mattress to have more cushioning, opt for the Nolah.

Nolah Signature Mattress Review

Both mattresses have impressive cooling features, such as Nolah’s AirScape foam and Emma’s ParticleCool Premium Foam. However, the Nolah mattress has better edge support, so it may work better for couples.

Who Should Get The Emma Mattress?

  • Stomach sleepers
  • Fans of firmer mattresses
  • People who want to save money

Who Should Get The Nolah?

  • People who want a bed with a balanced foam feel.
  • Side sleepers
  • Fans of softer mattresses
