Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Firmness and Feel

When reviewing mattresses, we always take a close look at firmness level and feel. That way, we can help customers pick the best mattress for their sleep needs!

How Firm is the Tuft & Needle Mint?

In terms of firmness, the Mint feels like a 6.5/10, which is the industry standard. The Adaptive Foam is very soft, the transition layer is a bit firmer, and the base layer is even firmer. These combine to create a classic, medium-firm feel.

Sleeping on the Tuft & Needle Mint

Lying on my back, I felt a great balance of comfort and support. My hips sank in a bit but not too far. I will say that larger sleepers might have a different experience, and they will most likely need a firmer or more supportive mattress.

I felt the best when I was side sleeping on the Mint. The Adaptive Foam relieves pressure quite well, and the transition layer kept me from bottoming out. Again, heavier side sleepers might need more support overall.

When I was on my stomach, I was not getting enough support. My hips sunk into the mattress. Even for someone of average weight, the Mint might not be the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

What Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Feel Like?

The Mint has a balanced foam feel overall, because the Adaptive Foam mixes memory foam and latex qualities. It is soft but also very responsive. There is also some bounce, so you should get some nice pressure relief without getting stuck.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The Tuft & Needle Mint offers a good amount of support for average weight back sleepers. The comfort layers allow sleepers’ hips to sink in a bit, while still supporting the lumbar area.

Average weight side sleepers should feel well supported and comfortable on the Tuft & Needle Mint. The Adaptive Foam does a great job at relieving pressure, and the transition layer helps prevent people from bottoming out.

A woman sleeps on her side on the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress

Average weight stomach sleepers will likely feel the Mint is too soft. It’s possible their hips could sink deeply into the layers, causing the body to shift out of proper alignment. If this is your preferred sleeping position, you may want to choose a firmer mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Because heavier sleepers will sink deeper into the Adaptive Foam, the Tuft & Needle Mint will feel a bit firmer. While back sleeping, heavier sleepers should feel decent support overall. It’s possible some sleepers may feel their hips sinking in a bit too far.

While side sleeping, heavier sleepers may feel some pressure on shoulders and hips. It’s likely they will press through the comfort layer and into the firmer layers beneath.

The Tuft & Needle Mint isn’t a great choice for heavier stomach sleepers. Because it’s a softer mattress, the Mint isn’t supportive enough to keep hips in alignment. Overall, larger people will feel more comfortable and supported on one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

For the lightweight back sleepers, the Tuft & Needle Mint is a great choice. This mattress should provide ample lumbar support while still relieving pressure on joints. Lightweight people should also feel the Mint is great for side sleeping. The foam layers should give plenty of relief to shoulders and hips. Stomach sleepers in this category should feel well supported and comfortable, as well. Overall, this is a great choice for people who weigh less than 130 lb.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Construction

Now, let’s take a deep dive into the Tuft & Needle Mint’s construction. We’ll see how its comfort and support layers contribute to the overall feel of the mattress.

Cover

The cover is knitted and soft, but best of all, it’s machine washable! Cleaning the cover is simple. Just unzip the top portion and machine wash in cold water with mild detergent. Then, tumble dry on low heat.

Tuft & Needle Mint Construction (2022)

Comfort Layers

The first layer is 3” of an Adaptive Foam, which mixes memory foam and latex qualities into one foam. This results in a soft texture that’s also responsive and bouncy. People should feel nice pressure relief without getting stuck in the mattress. The foam is also infused with graphite and cooling gel, which is designed to aid with cooling.

Next, there is a 2” Mint layer, which consists of ceramic and gel-infused adaptive foam. These unique infusions aid with cooling and pressure relief.

Support Layer

Then there is a 6.5“ layer of standard base foam, which is pretty typical for an all-foam mattress. The base layer is firmer and more supportive toward the edge, and it is designed to help with edge support. If you need even more support, consider pairing the mattress with the Tuft & Needle Adjustable Frame.

Mattress Height

The Tuft & Needle Mint is 11.5″ tall.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Performance

How well does the Tuft & Needle perform when it comes to edge support, motion transfer, and durability? Keep reading to find out!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

If you occasionally wake up feeling hot at night, the Tuft & Needle Mint is a great option. The Adaptive foam is infused with graphite and cooling gel. These two materials are designed to promote airflow and dissipate heat. Overall, this mattress should sleep much cooler than traditional foam mattress.

Motion Transfer

If someone sleeps with a partner, it’s worth considering how well their mattress will handle motion transfer. In other words, when your partner moves around, will you feel it on your side of the bed?

To test the motion transfer on the Mint, I set a glass of water on the mattress. When I pressed into the mattress around the glass, I did see some disturbance. Also, when Roby moved around on the other side of the mattress, I felt some of his movements.

Overall, the Mint deals with motion transfer fairly well. It could be a decent mattress for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movements.

Edge Support

All-foam mattresses aren’t usually the best with edge support. However, unlike the original Tuft & Needle, the Mint features enhanced edge support. The support layer is firmer toward the edge of the mattress, so the Mint doesn’t compress as much when you get near the edge.

A woman rests near the edge on the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress

While sitting on the edge of the Mint, I feel secure enough to lean over and tie my shoes. Also, while lying down near the edge, I don’t feel like I am going to roll off the mattress. Overall, the Mint has good edge support.

Durability

The Tuft & Needle Mint is made with high-quality materials, so it should have a long lifespan. We expect this mattress to last at least 10 years.

Off-Gassing

When opening a new bed-in-a-box, it’s common to notice some off-gassing. There was a slight chemical smell after unboxing the Mint, but the odor completely faded after 48 hours.

Noise

When testing this mattress, we did not notice any noise. Because it’s an all-foam mattress, we do not anticipate it creating sound over time.

Sex

Couples looking for one of the best mattresses for sex generally want a mattress that’s responsive and easy to move around on. The Mint’s balanced foam feel gives it a good amount of bounce, so people shouldn’t feel stuck inside it. Overall, this is a good mattress for getting intimate.

Common Tuft & Needle Mattress Complaints

It’s not uncommon to find a few negative reviews online. For Tuft & Needle, most of the bad reviews were about returns and shipping. Oftentimes, people who order from a third-party seller like Amazon have difficulty exchanging or returning their mattress. Because of this, we encourage shoppers to order from the company directly.

Other sleepers have complained about the lack of support while stomach sleeping. Because the Mint is a softer mattress, it’s not a great match for people who sleep on their stomachs.
