Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Overview

Helix is a brand that gives you many chances to find the right mattress for your situation — the brand offers a standard line of mattresses and a line of luxury versions of those mattresses. The models in each line range from very soft to very firm. The brand’s absolute softest mattress is the Helix Sunset Luxe. It is also part of their Luxe line and features extra cooling materials plus a comfortable pillow top.

Being a softer mattress, the Helix Sunset Luxe is going to work better for certain types of sleepers.

Who Should Get The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress?

  • Side sleepers
  • Fans of soft mattresses
  • Shoppers looking for a luxury mattress

Who Shouldn’t Get The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress?

  • Stomach sleepers
  • Those who like a firmer mattress
  • Shoppers who need a more affordable mattress

Where the Helix Sunset Luxe Ranks

At Mattress Clarity, we rank mattresses based on hands-on testing in our sleep lab. Here’s where the Sunset Luxe has ranked on some of our 2023 roundups:

Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Firmness and Feel

When you’re shopping for a mattress, two of the most important things you should think about are firmness and feel. These criteria will determine whether or not a mattress will work for you.

How Firm Is The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress?

On a firmness scale of 1-10, the Helix Sunset Luxe is a 5.5/10. The industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5/10, so the Helix Sunset Luxe is definitely softer than average.

The mattress features plush materials right on top that really let you sink in.

Sleeping On The Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress

Back sleeping on the Helix Sunset Luxe was not the best for me. Back sleepers usually want something closer to medium-firm, and the Helix Sunset Luxe is much softer than that. I didn’t feel like I got the support I needed, and I felt a bit like I was falling into the mattress. Back sleepers should take a look at the Helix Midnight Luxe or Helix Dusk Luxe.

A man sleeps on his side on the Helix Sunset Luxe

The Sunset Luxe really shines when side sleeping. I really sank into the plush pillow top and felt almost no pressure on my shoulders and hips. I also felt the zoning in the coils; the firmer center area of the coils pressed into the area just below my rib cage. This helped keep my spine aligned while I was sleeping. Side sleepers should also check out the Helix Moonlight Luxe, another one of Helix’s soft mattresses.

Stomach sleepers do better with firm mattresses that will keep their hips elevated. The softer Helix Sunset Luxe did not give me enough support under my hips, and I could feel my hips and pelvis dipping into the mattress. This was definitely uncomfortable and I felt that it could lead to back pain over time. Stomach sleepers should consider the Helix Dawn Luxe or Helix Twilight Luxe, which are two of Helix’s firmer models.

What Does The Helix Sunset Luxe Feel Like?

The Helix Sunset Luxe is a hybrid mattress, so it is more responsive. The coils add some bounce to the mattress, and this responsiveness makes it very easy to move around and change positions.

On top of the mattress, the pillow top gives the mattress a plush feel. Beneath that, you get just a bit of that memory foam feel.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back sleepers will probably think the Helix Sunset Luxe feels too soft. They won’t get enough support and, as I experienced, they could drop into the mattress. Average weight sleepers who are closer to 130 lb could get enough support, but the Midnight Luxe and Dusk Luxe are better options, since they offer a more medium-firm feel.

If you are an average weight side sleeper, you should love the Helix Sunset Luxe. Again, it is a very plush mattress and should provide comfort for your pressure points at the shoulders and hips.

Average weight stomach sleepers will most likely want a firmer mattress. The Helix Dawn Luxe or Helix Twilight Luxe should offer better support under the hips.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

If you are a larger back sleeper, the Helix Sunset Luxe won’t offer you enough support. You should try the Helix Midnight Luxe or, if you are much heavier, the Helix Plus mattress. This is a mattress for heavy people that is extra supportive and durable.

Heavyweight side sleepers who weigh less than 275 lb should feel nice pressure relief on their shoulders and hips. If you weigh more than this, take a look at the Helix Plus or one of our best mattresses for heavy people.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers will need a firmer, more supportive mattress overall. Sleeping on the Helix Sunset Luxe, these sleepers will likely feel their hips sinking too far into the mattress.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Lightweight back sleepers could find the Sunset Luxe supportive enough. However, if you are lightweight and sleep strictly on your back, the Midnight Luxe or Dusk Luxe are going to be better options, as their firmer feels are better for back sleeping.

Side sleepers of this body type should feel great sleeping on the Helix Sunset Luxe. If you have this body shape, the soft pillow top and foam layers should offer great pressure relief.

Lightweight stomach sleepers could feel okay on the Sunset Luxe, but it is not ideal. Stomach sleepers who are lightweight should at least look at the medium-firm Helix Luxe models if not the very firm models.

Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Construction

Let’s unzip the cover of the Helix Sunset Luxe and discuss exactly what is inside.

Cover

With the Helix Luxe mattresses, you have a choice of covers. First off, they offer their standard Tencel cover which is breathable and soft. Second, for an additional few hundred dollars, you can opt for their GlacioTex Cooling cover. This cover is cool to the touch and is designed to draw heat away from your body.

Comfort Layers

The top layer of the Helix Sunset Luxe is a soft pillow top. This is plusher than the pillow tops you find on the other Helix Luxe mattresses.

Below that, there is a layer of Memory Plus Foam. This adds more cushioning to the top of the mattress and offers pressure relief and contouring for sleepers. This rests on top of a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, which is a responsive latex alternative. This provides some more pressure relief but also provides a bit of support as well.

Finally, you have a transition layer made out of high-density polyfoam. This keeps you from bottoming out on the mattress and feeling the coils in the support layer.

Support Layers

The main support layer consists of pocketed coils with a zoned design. This means the coils toward the center of the mattress are firmer and provide extra lumbar support.

On the bottom of the mattress, there is a base layer of DuraDense Foam. This supports the other layers and keeps the coils from poking into your bed frame or foundation.

Mattress Height

The Helix Sunset Luxe mattress is 14” tall.

Helix Sunset Luxe Mattress Performance

I ran the Helix Sunset Luxe through a gauntlet of tests. Let’s see how it did!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Overall, the Helix Sunset Luxe sleeps quite cool. The coils allow for a great deal of airflow, and the top foam layers are designed not to trap heat. I also reviewed the model with the cooling cover, and I can say it adds even more cooling properties to the mattress.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is important if you sleep with a partner. You want a mattress that will isolate each person’s movements to their side of the mattress.

The Helix Sunset Luxe performed well during my tests. Lying down on one side of the mattress, I asked my coworker to roll around on the other side. I did not feel his movements on my side of the mattress.

This means the Helix Sunset Luxe could be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support

The Helix Sunset Luxe features some excellent edge support. I felt very secure when I was sitting and lying down near the edge of the mattress. If you sleep with a partner or simply like sleeping toward the edge of the mattress, the Helix Sunset Luxe should be a good match.

Durability

The Helix Sunset Luxe is a luxury mattress that boasts some very durable materials. Based on its construction and materials, the mattress should last for at least 10 years.

Off-gassing

The Helix Sunset Luxe is a bed-in-a-box mattress, and it arrived at my house in a cardboard box. Unboxing the Helix Sunset Luxe, there was a slight chemical smell, but this is normal with online mattresses. The phenomenon is called off-gassing and occurs as the mattress releases gasses that were trapped during compression.

I put the Helix Sunset Luxe in a ventilated room, and the off-gassing dissipated after about 48 hours.

Noise

The Helix Sunset Luxe did not make any noise when I moved around on it. The coils weren’t squeaking at all, but this could be an issue after 10 or so years.

Sex

Sexual partners usually do better on bouncier, more responsive mattresses. The Helix Sunset Luxe is bouncy and should be a good mattress for sex.

How Does The Helix Sunset Luxe Compare to Other Mattresses?

When you’re searching for a new mattress, it’s always a good idea to do some comparison shopping. Let’s compare the Helix Sunset Luxe to other relevant mattresses.

Helix Sunset vs Helix Sunset Luxe

The Helix Sunset and Helix Sunset Luxe are similar in that they both feature individually-wrapped coils, Memory Plus Foam, and Helix Dynamic Foam. The similarities end there, however. The Helix Sunset Luxe features an additional pillow top and optional cooling cover. Its coils are also zoned and offer targeted support, while the Helix Sunset’s coils do not.

A shot of the inner materials of the Helix Sunset

The pillow top also gives the Helix Sunset Luxe a plusher pillow top feel. The Helix Sunset has more of a balanced foam feel right on top of the mattress.

The main difference between the Sunset and Sunset Luxe has to do with price. With its extra materials and more luxury design, the Sunset Luxe costs almost twice as much as the Sunset.
