Douglas Mattress Firmness and Feel

It’s always important to examine a mattress’s firmness and feel. That way, you can easily figure out whether it will offer the optimal amount of comfort and support! Let’s see what the Douglas mattress is all about.

How Firm is the Douglas Mattress?

The Douglas mattress feels slightly softer than average, coming in at 6/10 on our firmness scale. For reference, 6.5/10 represents the industry standard of medium-firm.

Sleeping On The Douglas Mattress

Generally, the Douglas mattress works well for back and side sleepers. Even though the mattress feels soft, it still offers plenty of lumbar support. However, the Douglas mattress doesn’t work well for stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, people need lots of hip support in order to maintain the proper spinal alignment.

It’s important to remember that these statements are subjective and can differ depending on a person’s height and weight. Keep reading to learn more about how this mattress feels for different types of people.

What Does the Douglas Mattress Feel Like?

The Douglas mattress has a slow-moving feel that sleepers can gently sink into. On this bed, people will feel lots of body contouring and cushioning along pressure points. However, because it’s not super responsive, some people might have difficulty moving around on top of this mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Back and side sleepers who weigh less than 200 lb should feel supported and comfortable on the Douglas mattress. Those who weigh more than 200 lb may develop some joint pain, however, because they will sink further into the comfort layers and feel more of the supportive base foam underneath.

The Douglas mattress is a bit too soft for stomach sleepers. If you tend to rest in this sleeping position, we recommend checking out our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Because the Douglas mattress is only 10” tall and feels softer than average, it isn’t a great choice for heavyweight sleepers. Larger back sleepers will likely feel their hips sinking out of alignment, and bigger side sleepers may develop pain along their shoulders and hips. Stomach sleepers will also need more hip support, so if you weigh more than 230 lb, you may want to consider getting one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Lightweight sleepers should feel comfortable in all three sleeping positions. Smaller folks won’t compress the comfort layer too much, so they should feel both comfortable and supported – even while stomach sleeping!

Douglas Mattress Construction

Now, let’s see what sets this mattress apart and look at its construction.

Mattress Height

The Douglas mattress is 10” tall.

Cover

The Douglas CoolSense Cover contains sustainable Infinitex, which helps pull away moisture and keep sleepers cool at night. Best of all – the cover is removable and machine-washable!

Comfort Layers

The first comfort layer consists of two inches of Douglas’s Luxury ecoLight Cooling Gel Memory Foam. This luxurious material feels slow-moving and cushy, but it doesn’t trap heat easily or cause sleepers to feel “stuck” inside the mattress.

Douglas Mattress Construction

Next up, you’ll find two inches of Premium Elastex Foam. This material feels more responsive than the ecoLight Foam, which helps support the spine and prevents sleepers from “bottoming out.”

Support Layer

At the bottom, you’ll find six inches of Motion Isolation Support Foam. This thick piece of foam gives the mattress its durability and helps absorb movement.

Douglas Mattress Performance

We won’t stop there! We also tested the Douglas mattress’s performance features. Keep reading to learn more about its motion isolation, edge, support, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Douglas mattress has many features that help keep it cool, including gel foam and a breathable cover. But even so, we don’t think this is the best mattress for hot sleepers. Because it’s made entirely out of foam and has a slow-moving feel, the Douglas mattress will trap some body heat. If you tend to sleep hot at night, you may want to consider getting a hybrid mattress.

Motion Transfer

The Douglas isolates motion well, making it a great mattress for couples. If you share a bed with a partner who tends to toss and turn at night, you shouldn’t feel their movements on your side of the bed.

Edge Support

In our experience, the Douglas mattress doesn’t have the best edge support. We sank through the top layers whenever we sat and rested near the side of the bed. This could create an issue for couples because it could force both people to sleep toward the center of the bed.

Durability

The Douglas mattress should have an average lifespan of about 5-7 years.

Off-Gassing

When you unbox a new mattress, it’s common to notice a faint chemical smell. We call this “off-gassing,” and it occurred with the Douglas mattress. It’s nothing to worry about, however, because the smell completely faded away after 48 hours.

Noise

The Douglas mattress is completely silent, and because it doesn’t contain springs, we don’t expect it to create sound as time goes on.

Sex

Couples looking for one of the best mattresses for sex typically want a bed they can easily move around on top of. Unfortunately, the Douglas mattress doesn’t fit the bill. It has a slow-moving feel, which could make it difficult for some people to switch positions.

Common Douglas Mattress Complaints

Most people love their Douglas mattress, but some stomach sleepers complained about the mattress feeling too soft. We don’t recommend this mattress for stomach sleepers because it could lead to lower back pain.

How Does The Douglas Mattress Compare To Other Mattresses?

Shopping for a new mattress can feel confusing, so to make things clearer, we’ll compare the Douglas mattress to two other popular Canadian mattresses: Novosbed and Logan & Cove.

Douglas vs Novosbed

Even though they are both all-foam mattresses, these beds have several differences. Most notably, the Novosbed is available in soft, medium, and firm, while the Douglas mattress only has one firmness option.

Both mattresses have removable covers and two comfort layers. However, the Douglas mattress contains gel foam while the Novosbed features ventilated memory foam. Both mattresses should help dissipate heat, but they may not work well for folks who sleep particularly hot at night.

Novosbed Mattress Reviews and Complaints

The Novosbed has a higher price point, but it may last longer than the Douglas. Additionally, the Novosbed ships to both the USA and Canada.

Who Should Get The Douglas Mattress?

  • People who want to save money
  • Folks who want a softer mattress

Who Should Get The Novosbed?

  • People who want to choose between multiple firmness options
  • Those who want a more luxurious mattress

Read our full Novosbed mattress review.

Douglas vs Logan & Cove

The Logan & Cove mattress has a hybrid construction, and because it has coils for support, it feels responsive and bouncy. It’s much easier for folks to move around on top of the Logan & Cove mattress.

The Logan & Cove mattress is a better choice for hot sleepers because the coils allow room for airflow and the Tencel cover helps dissipate body heat. However, the Logan & Cove mattress doesn’t isolate motion as well as the Douglas.

A woman rests on her side on the Logan and Cove mattress

The Logan & Cove mattress has two firmness options: Luxury Firm and Medium Plush. Because of its high-end materials, this mattress is sold at a higher price point. The Logan & Cove is sold in both the USA and Canada, while the Douglas mattress is only available in Canada.

Who Should Get The Douglas Mattress?

  • People who want a more budget-friendly mattress
  • Fans of a slow-moving feel
  • Those who want a softer mattress

Who Should Get The Logan & Cove Mattress?

  • People who want firmness options
  • Fans of bouncy hybrid mattresses
  • Hot sleepers

FAQs

Still have questions? Check out our FAQ section below.

Can you put a Douglas mattress on a box spring?

Because of the dense support layer, it’s not necessary to place the Douglas mattress on a box spring. All you need is a strong platform base or bed frame, but a box spring will work just fine if that’s what you prefer.

Is the Douglas mattress good for back pain?

The Douglas mattress could be a good choice for back and side sleepers who weigh less than 200 lb and have back pain. We don’t recommend this mattress for heavier folks or stomach sleepers, because it could amplify lower back pain and cause joint pain.

Can you flip the Douglas mattress?

No, this is not a flippable mattress. It is designed with supportive base foam at the bottom and comfort layers on top. If you flipped it, the mattress wouldn’t feel comfortable.
