Saatva and Leesa Firmness and Feel Differences
I spent time on both mattresses testing how firm they are and what they feel like. My experience should give you a good initial idea about whether the Saatva or Leesa will be better for you.
How Firm are the Saatva and Leesa Mattresses?
When you purchase a Saatva Classic mattress, you can select from three firmness options. Saatva offers Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm models. I reviewed and slept on the Saatva Luxury Firm mattress, and it felt like a 7/10. 6.5 is the industry standard for medium-firm, so the Luxury Firm is just a bit firmer than average. The Plush Soft will be softer than this, and the Firm mattress will be, you guessed it, firmer.
You do not have firmness options with the Leesa mattress. In my experience, the mattress felt like a 6.5/10, exactly medium-firm. The top layers of foam are very soft but, combined with the firm support layer, the mattress has that perfect balance of comfort and support.
Sleeping on the Saatva and Leesa Mattresses
When I was back sleeping, the Saatva Luxury Firm mattress was the perfect match for me. The plush pillow top allowed my hips to press into the mattress just the right amount. I could feel the two sets of coils holding up my body, and the zoning found in the pillow top and coils provided additional lumbar support. Overall, the Saatva Luxury Firm is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Side sleeping, the Saatva Luxury Firm provided me with some decent pressure relief. The pillow top eased some of the pressure build-up around my shoulders and hips, and the first set of coils helped as well. That being said, if you sleep primarily on your side, I would recommend the Plush Soft model.
Stomach sleeping, the Saatva was supportive enough to me. I felt the excellent support of both sets of coils, and my hips were not bowing forward into the mattress. If your hips bow into your mattress, you could experience lower back pain over time. This shouldn’t be an issue on the Saatva mattress.
The Leesa was also comfortable when I lay on my back. The medium-firm mattress provided me with just the right amount of comfort and support. However, I did not get the same amount of lumbar support I enjoyed on the Saatva mattress.
Side sleeping, the Leesa offered better pressure relief than the Saatva Luxury Firm mattress. The soft LSA200 foam and memory foam layers gave my shoulders and hips just the right amount of cushioning.
Being a medium-firm mattress, the Leesa was not supportive enough for me while I was stomach sleeping. I noticed that unwanted sensation of my hips pushing down into the mattress. Stomach sleepers will most likely require a firmer mattress overall.
What Do The Saatva and Leesa Mattresses Feel Like?
The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress, and it has that traditional bouncy feel you would expect. Two sets of coils make the mattress very responsive, so it is quite easy to move around and change positions. On top of the mattress, the Saatva boasts a plush pillow top feel.
The Leesa is also a responsive mattress but has more of a foam feel overall. The LSA200 foam is soft and lets me sink in, but it also felt bouncy. If you want some of that foam feel but don’t want to get stuck in your mattress, the Leesa could be a good option.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb
Average weight back sleepers should get what they need on both the Saatva and Leesa mattresses. Both offer the balance of comfort and support back sleepers should be seeking. However, if you deal with back pain or simply want better lumbar support, the Saatva is the way to go.
Side sleepers in this weight range should prefer the Leesa mattress. It is the softer of the two mattresses and lets you sink in for nice pressure relief.
Stomach sleeping, the Saatva is the clear winner for average weight sleepers. It is the firmer mattress, and its two sets of coils provide more support than Leesa’s base foam.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb
Heavyweight back sleepers will probably fare better on the Saatva mattress. Larger people require more support than average weight and lightweight sleepers. The Leesa’s base foam will probably not be able to support heavier weights. If you weigh over 300 lb, you can also look at the Saatva HD, the brand’s mattress made just for heavy people.
Heavyweight side sleepers won’t get the best pressure relief on the Leesa mattress because they could bottom out and press too far into the mattress. If you are heavier and sleep on your side, the Saatva Plush Soft could work. Those who weigh over 300 lb should consider one of our best mattresses for heavy people.
Heavyweight stomach sleepers will need a mattress that is more supportive than the Saatva and Leesa. An extra firm mattress or other mattress made with heavy people in mind should provide the support they need.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb
Lightweight back sleepers should enjoy sleeping on both the Saatva and the Leesa. It will really come down to feel preference. Side sleeping, lightweight people might find the Saatva to be too firm. They should feel more comfortable on the Leesa mattress. Stomach sleeping, both mattresses should work well for lightweight people.
Mattress Construction Differences
Now, I’d like to take a closer look at the materials you’ll find in the Saatva and Leesa.
Cover
The Saatva mattress features an organic cotton cover that is soft and breathable as well. It is quilted with soft foam.
The Leesa features a twill fabric cover that is thin and allows for air to flow through it.
Comfort Layers
The Saatva’s main comfort layer is the Euro top. The quilted and tufted Euro top is plush and provides nice cushioning. This layer is also zoned so that the center feels firmer than the head and foot of the mattress. This is designed to provide extra lumbar support and keep the spine neutrally aligned. This can make for a more comfortable night of sleep and can also prevent back pain and other joint issues.
The Leesa’s top comfort layer contains the brand’s proprietary LSA200 foam. This is a cooler and more responsive alternative to memory foam. It promises soft contouring, but shouldn’t trap body heat or make you feel stuck in the mattress.
Beneath that, Leesa features a layer of memory foam. This provides even more pressure relief and also acts as a transition layer that helps ease you down into the mattress.
Support Layers
The Saatva features not one but two layers of coils. The first layer of pocketed coils has more give and helps add even more pressure relief to the mattress. They are also zoned toward the center to offer even more lumbar support. These coils rest on more supportive, high-grade coils that work to support even heavier weights.
The Leesa mattress contains high-density base foam in the support layer. This is firmer than the top foam layers and is meant to keep your body elevated.

Saatva and Leesa Performance Differences
I ran the Saatva and Leesa through a number of tests to find out how they performed with regard to cooling and other criteria. Let’s see how they did!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Between the two mattresses, the Saatva is the cooler option. Its two sets of coils leave a lot of room for airflow, so it should not be trapping too much heat. Motion Transfer
Motion transfer should be a major consideration if you sleep with a partner. Motion transfer occurs when one partner moves around on their side of the mattress and disturbs their partner on the other side.
In my experience, the Leesa offers better motion isolation than the Saatva. The Saatva is bouncier than the Leesa and doesn’t absorb as much motion as the all-foam Leesa.
Edge Support
Edge support is also important for couples to think about. A mattress with strong edge support will allow both partners to sleep toward the edge without rolling off.
The Saatva is the clear winner in this respect. It has two sets of coils as well as a reinforced edge. Sleeping partners should be able to utilize the full surface area of the Saatva.
Durability
While these are both high-quality mattresses, the Saatva is the more durable option. It has a more complex design and features materials that will stand up to more use. It should last for at least 10 years, and the all-foam Leesa will probably only last for 7 years.
Off-gassing
Off-gassing occurs when you unbox a new mattress. As the mattress expands, you could notice a slight chemical smell. This is normal and should dissipate within a few days.
There was some off-gassing with the Leesa mattress but not with the Saatva. The Saatva Classic arrived at my house fully expanded, so it was ready to sleep on immediately.
Noise
When I moved around on both mattresses, I heard no real noise. However, the Saatva mattress could start to squeak after many years of use. This is a common occurrence with older innerspring mattresses.
Sex
If you want a mattress for sex, the bouncier the better. The Leesa is responsive but nowhere near as bouncy as the Saatva. The Saatva will make it easier for sexual partners to move around and change positions.
