Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Review

Helix is a great brand if you just aren’t sure what type of mattress to get. The brand offers a number of different hybrid mattresses that range from very firm to very soft. Helix also has a sleep quiz that will help you find the right mattress for you. If you’re after a top-quality option, Helix might recommend a Luxe mattress. The Helix Luxe mattresses are their most luxurious offerings and feature an additional pillow top along with extra cooling features.

The Helix Dusk Luxe is one of the brand’s medium-firm options and, like the rest of the Helix Luxe line, it features luxury materials that are both comfortable and supportive. With this design, the Helix Dusk Luxe is going to work very well for particular people with certain sleeping positions and preferences.

Who Should Get The Helix Dusk Luxe?

  • Back sleepers
  • Hot sleepers who want a great cooling mattress
  • Those looking for a luxury mattress

Who Shouldn’t Get The Helix Dusk Luxe?

  • Fans of very firm or very soft mattresses
  • Strict side sleepers
  • Those who want a more affordable mattress

Helix Dusk Luxe Firmness and Feel

When you’re shopping for a new mattress, it’s always good to consider firmness and feel. This will give you a good idea of whether or not a mattress will work for your situation.

How Firm Is The Helix Dusk Luxe?

On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, the Helix Dusk Luxe scored a 6.5/10, which is the industry standard for medium-firm. The top pillow top and foams provide a good bit of comfort while the coils are firmer and more supportive. These all combine to give the Helix Dusk Luxe that 6.5 score.

Sleeping On The Helix Dusk Luxe

Back sleeping on the Helix Dusk Luxe was a dream. Medium-firm mattresses are usually a great match for back sleepers, and the Helix Dusk Luxe is no exception. I felt great lumbar support and my hips were allowed to sink in just the right amount. This should be a great mattress for back sleepers.

Side sleeping, I felt decent pressure relief on the Helix Dusk Luxe. The pillow top provided some cushioning around my shoulders and hips, and I was not bottoming out. That being said, if you just sleep on your side, take a look at the Helix Sunset Luxe and Helix Moonlight Luxe, the two softest models, as they provide more cushioning for the hips and shoulders.

When I was stomach sleeping on the Helix Dusk Luxe, I was not getting enough support under my hips. I could feel my center mass dipping into the mattress, and this was causing some strain in my lower back. If you want a mattress for stomach sleepers, consider the Helix Dawn Luxe and Helix Twilight Luxe, the two firmest Luxe models.

What Does The Helix Dusk Luxe Feel Like?

The Helix Dusk Luxe has a responsive hybrid feel. The coils and the layers of responsive foam give the mattress some real bounce. This makes it very easy to move around and change positions.

You also get some of that soft pillow top feel right on top of the mattress. This lets you sink in a bit, but you won’t feel stuck.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back sleepers should really enjoy sleeping on the Helix Dusk Luxe. They should have the same experience I did. I felt great contouring and comfort from the pillow top and top foam layers while the coils offered the proper amount of support. You can also try the Helix Midnight Luxe if you are a back sleeper, as it also has a balanced, medium-firm feel.

A man sleeps on his back on the Helix Dusk Luxe

If you are a side sleeper and weigh close to 130 lb, you will get great pressure relief from the Helix Dusk Luxe. If you weigh closer to 230 lb, you could feel a bit more pressure on your shoulders and hips. Again, take a look at one of the softer Helix models like the Helix Sunset Luxe.

Stomach sleepers who weigh close to 130 lb could get enough support on the Helix Dusk Luxe. However, if you weigh much more than this, you might want to choose a firmer mattress. Without the proper support, you could start to feel lower back pain over time.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

If you are a heavier back sleeper and weigh closer to 230 lb, the Helix Dusk Luxe should work well for you. However, if you are over 300 lb, the mattress might not be supportive enough. You should take a look at the Helix Plus, the brand’s mattress made for heavy people.

Heavyweight side sleepers will probably feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips. Their heavier weight will cause them to press further into the mattress and feel more pressure build-up.

Stomach sleepers of this body type will want a firmer mattress. They will want to look at the Helix Sunset Luxe, Helix Twilight Luxe, or if they are over 300 lb, the Helix Plus. For more options, read our best mattresses for heavy people article.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

Lightweight back and side sleepers should feel very supported and comfortable on the Helix Dusk Luxe mattress. Stomach sleepers in this weight range could also get enough support from the Helix Dusk Luxe. This means it could be a good choice for lightweight combination sleepers.

However, if you are lightweight and want the most support possible, take a look at one of Helix’s firmer models.

Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Construction

Let’s see exactly what’s inside the Helix Dusk Luxe mattress.

Cover

The Helix Dusk Luxe has two available covers. First, you can choose the standard Tencel cover. This material is breathable and helps dissipate heat. Second, Helix offers the GlacioTex Cooling cover for an additional cost of a few hundred dollars. This material is cool to the touch and works to draw heat away from your body.

Comfort Layers

First off, the Helix Dusk Luxe features a pillow top as its main comfort layer. It is plush and offers soft comfort on top of the mattress. Second, you have a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, an alternative to latex foam. It is responsive and makes it easy to move around on the mattress. It rests on a layer of Memory Plus Foam which adds some softer comfort to the top layers. It also has a bit of that classic memory foam feel.

This all rests on a layer of high-density polyfoam. This acts as a transition layer and eases you down from the comfort layers down to the firmer support layers.

Support Layers

The Helix Dusk Luxe boasts supportive, pocketed coils in its support layer. The coils are zoned so that the center of the mattress is firmer than the rest of the mattress. This is meant to provide additional lumbar support and keep your spine neutrally aligned.

The coil layer rests on a thin base layer of Helix’s DuraDense foam. This supports the layers above and prevents the coils from poking into your foundation or bed frame.

Mattress Height

The Helix Dusk Luxe is 14” tall.

Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress Performance

I tested the Helix Dusk Luxe with regard to cooling, motion transfer, and other criteria. Let’s see how it did.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

If you are a hot sleeper, the Helix Dusk Luxe could be a good choice. I reviewed the model with the cooling cover, and it is truly cool to the touch. I could feel it keeping me cool during the night.

The coils also allow for a good deal of airflow, so the Dusk Luxe shouldn’t be trapping heat deeper in the mattress.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer occurs when a sleeping partner moves around one side of the mattress and disturbs their partner on the other side of the mattress. This is a major issue for couples, but some mattresses cut down on motion transfer quite well.

During my tests, the Helix Dusk Luxe isolated motion to each side of the mattress. When my coworker moved around on the other side of the mattress, I did not feel it on my side. If you need a mattress for couples, consider the Helix Dusk Luxe.

Edge Support

Edge support is also important for couples to consider. If your mattress has good edge support, you and your partner will be able to sleep toward the edges of the mattress. This will give you and your partner the most room to stretch out and utilize the full surface area of the mattress.

The Helix Dusk Luxe has excellent edge support, and I feel very secure sitting and lying down near the edge. You and your partner should be able to sleep comfortably near the edges of the Helix Dusk Luxe.

Durability

When you buy a new mattress, you want to make sure it’s going to last for a good amount of time. You’re spending hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars, and you don’t want your mattress sagging or breaking down in just a few years.

The Helix Dusk Luxe is a very durable mattress. It features high-density foams, supportive coils, and an overall luxurious design. Based on this, I would say the mattress will last for at least 10 years.

Off-gassing

Off-gassing is a common occurrence with bed-in-a-box mattresses. When you unbox most bed-in-a-box mattresses, they will initially emit a slight chemical smell. This is completely normal.

I experienced some off-gassing when I unboxed the Helix Dusk Luxe, but the smell completely went away after 48 hours. Just make sure to leave the mattress in a ventilated room, and your new Helix mattress will be ready to go after two days.

Noise

A noisy mattress can be another distraction for sleeping partners. If your bed creaks and squeaks, you could be disturbed and wake up.

When I moved around on the Helix Dusk Luxe, it made no real noise. I changed positions and rolled around and didn’t hear anything. Just note that hybrid mattresses might start to squeak after you use them for a number of years.

Sex

If you and your partner want a good mattress for sex, a hybrid is usually going to be a good fit. Hybrid mattresses are bouncy and make it easy for you to move around and change positions.

The Helix Dusk Luxe is indeed bouncy and should be a good mattress for sexual partners.

How Does The Helix Dusk Luxe Compare To Other Mattresses?

When you’re on the hunt for a new mattress, don’t forget to check out the competition as well. I’m going to compare the Helix Dusk Luxe to another mattress you might be considering.

Helix Dusk Luxe vs Helix Dusk Luxe

If you’ve narrowed down your choice to the Helix Dusk, you now need to decide between the Standard Helix and Luxe models. There are some major differences that should make it easy to choose.

The Helix Dusk Luxe features a plush pillow top, but the Helix Dusk Standard does not. This gives the Helix Dusk Luxe a plusher feel than the Helix Dusk. Also, you can add a cooling cover to the Helix Dusk Luxe, but you cannot with the Helix Dusk. The coils are also zoned in the Dusk Luxe, but not in the Dusk.

A cross-section of the Helix Dusk

You get a lot more with the Dusk Luxe, so it does cost significantly more than the Dusk.
